Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many members of the hunt club are werewolves (excluding Gabriel)?

Answer: Two

Von Glower was born a werewolf because his father was a werewolf. His father raped a girl. Then a gyspy turned him into a werewolf as punishment for this crime. A schattenjager captured Von Glower's father and locked him up in the dungeon. Later, Von Glower's father was burned. But then the cursed was passed down to Von Glower.

Von Glower decided the best way to deal with this curse was to find a companion. Werewolves have an instinct to find companions. Von Glower lived his life turning people into werewolves so they could be his lifelong companions. None of them handled the change well.

So then Von Glower started the hunting club. He figured if he could give men time to buy into his philosophy, they'd be ready for the change. Von Zell was the best student Von Glower ever had, so Von Glower changed him. Von Zell handled the change better than Von Glower's previous chosen ones, but he was still a disaster. So Von Glower didn't bother changing the other club members.

However, Gabriel had already been changed because Von Zell bit him. Von Glower then thinks Gabriel will handle the change better than his previous chosen ones because Gabriel's blood is already supernatural. Unbeknownst to Gabriel, Von Glower knew right from the beginning about Gabriel's family line and the schattenjagers. We know that this is because Von Glower saw one of Gabriel's ancestors capture his father, which later led to his burning.

Von Glower wants Gabriel to be his lifelong companion for two reason. First because Von Glower always wants a lifelong companion, and secondly, because he doesn't want the schattenjager to kill him.
2. When does Grace show Von Glower's letter to Gabriel?

Answer: Never

It's possible that Grace shows Gabriel the letter some time between the final puzzle of the game and the ending, but there really wouldn't be that much point to it at that point. If you try to get Grace to show him the letter, Grace will always say that she'll show him the letter eventually. But it never happens during the game at least.

Grace is afraid Gabriel will choose to be Von Glower's lifelong companion. During the ending, though, Gabriel says that he would not have chosen that.
3. Where is most of the opera hidden?

Answer: In the castle

Ludwig appears in Gabriel's dream to show him exactly what happened at the end of his life. The opening movie to chapter 6 shows exactly where each piece of the opera was hidden. Three pieces of the opera were hidden in the castle. Ludwig was on his way to the castle to hide the fourth piece of the opera when he was arrested.

As he was being taken into custody, Elizabeth walked up to him to say goodbye. Ludwig gave her the final piece of the opera and told her to put it with his heart at Altotting. Gabriel tells this dream to Grace, who gets the opera pieces.
4. Grace uses what kind of bird to help her get one piece of the opera?

Answer: Pigeon

Grace spots a pigeon in the window just outside the bars of the dungeon. She uses some bread she gets from Mrs. Smith to lure the pigeon in and she captures the pigeon with a pillowcase. Then, somehow she puts the pigeon in her pocket without killing it.

When she gets to the final room of the castle, she releases the pigeon into the hallway. The pigeon, which somehow survives a 2-and-a-half hour car trip inside Grace's pocket, distracts the guard, giving Grace a chance to steal one of the opera pieces.

It sure is nice having bottomless pockets. I wish I was an adventure game hero.
5. Where does Grace get a penitent offering?

Answer: Wolfgang's tomb

Gerde left a penitent offering for Wolfgang when she died, and it was in the shape of a heart. Grace needs a heart urn, so she needs a penitent offering in the shape of a heart. Grace feels morally wrong taking Gerde's gift to Wolfgang. However, Grace gets Gerde's permission to do it. Gerde is willing to do whatever it takes to help Gabriel.
6. The monk at Altotting is what?

Answer: Deaf

When Grace tries to speak to the monk, she can't get herself understood. At first at seems like this may be because he doesn't speak English and maybe Grace's German isn't good enough. However, we see the monk communicating in sign language. Also, when Grace moves the chair, it makes A LOT of noise. The monk is in the room, and while the Madonna has darkened the room so that he can't see anything, a normal person would have easily been able to hear the sound of the chair moving. The monk couldn't hear it, so he must be deaf.

We don't hear the monk speak, so it's possible he may be mute. However, deaf people often don't speak because they can't hear themselves. The game has more evidence suggesting the monk is deaf than mute.
7. At the theater, what does Gabriel complain about to Grace?

Answer: The heat

Even though Gabriel is wrapped up in blankets, he is still too cold. This gives Grace a reason to light the furnace, which will be important later.
8. Why does Grace's plan fail?

Answer: The theater was rebuilt

Grace's plan was to finally enact Ludwig's and Wagner's plan, which was to design an opera that would force Von Glower to change into his wolf form. In his wolf form, Von Glower would feel an overwhelming desire to eat members of the audience, which would cause the cop to shoot him. One part of the opera is meant to sound like a wolf howling, in fact at one point of the opera the main character is supposed to turn into a wolf. The chandeliers in the theater needed to be placed in perfect positions, so that the music would reflect off the chandeliers and force Von Glower into his wolf form.

However, the opera house was destroyed in World War II and had to be rebuilt. The new opera house was smaller than the one Ludwig and Wagner were going to use. The men installing the chandeliers had to change the measurements to adjust to this.

When Grace says this to Gabriel, Gabriel is furious. He knows that he'll have to take care of Von Glower himself.
9. Which act of the opera is also a piece of music in the first "Gabriel Knight" game?

Answer: Act 1

Act 1 is the last portion of the game where you play as Grace, with the exception of one little part at the end. During this act, Grace ties a rope to the handles of the door to the Mittel Loge to keep it shut and hangs a "Privat" sign on the door so no one will remove the rope. Then, Grace goes to watch the rest of the opera from the spotlight room. Act 2 switches back to Gabriel.
10. What is the only thing Gabriel uses his dagger for in this game?

Answer: To open a grate

Gabriel has owned the schattenjager dagger ever since Wolfgang left the castle in his name. But he has only ever used it for mundane tasks. In "Gabriel Knight 2," he uses it to remove the screws off a grate so he can open it and escape the room that Grace had locked him in.
11. What does Gabriel do to Costello (the lead actor)?

Answer: He ties him up with duct tape

Gabriel knows that in order to get rid of Von Glower he will have to join the opera and force himself to get turned into a wolf so he can force Von Glower into his wolf form with a genuine howl. This means Gabriel will have to play the role of lead actor in act 3, and that means he'll have to replace Costello, and to keep Costello from objecting, Gabriel has to put duct tape over his mouth (to keep him from screaming) and tie him up. Yes, Gabriel's not exactly King Graham. He's not your typical good-guy hero. He's kind of a rogue hero.

However, when playing as Grace you witness Costello arguing with the producers and the conductor of the play, complain about his lack of singing lines in act 3 and demanding a last minute change to a Wagner opera. A lot of actors would have been fired for that in the real world. Presumably, the purpose of this cut scene is so that you won't feel bad about what you do to the actor when playing as Gabriel. Gabriel does not witness this dispute though, so presumably this cut scene is just for the player.
12. What must Gabriel do to Von Glower when they're both in the basement in wolf form?

Answer: Corner him in the furnace room

First, you have to seal off the exit in the bottom left corner of the basement that Gabriel accidently cleared for Von Glower. Then you must try to corner Von Glower in the furnace room. Doing any of the other three options will get Gabriel killed.
13. Although Grace cannot die in this game, there is one thing you can do while playing as Grace that will lose the game. What is this?

Answer: Grab Leber

Actually, technically there's two things. You can also do nothing, or fail to switch back over to Gabriel. If you are still controlling Grace when Von Glower leaps for the exit, you will lose the game.

Even after you do everything you're supposed to do, Grace will automatically grab Leber and demand him to stop shooting at Gabriel, which he will. However, if YOU make Grace grab Leber, it will backfire big time and Leber will kill Gabriel.
14. The last puzzle of the game involves what?

Answer: Timing

As Von Glower leaps for the exit, Gabriel is supposed to leap at Von Glower and push him into the furnace mid-air. You have to time the leap perfectly. If you leap too early or too late, Von Glower will dart between Leber and Grace and get away, and Leber will shoot Gabriel.

This puzzle is a little counterintuitive for regular adventure game players. Usually with puzzles like this, you are supposed to act as quickly as possible. If something happens before you act, you're usually dead. In this case, you have to wait for something to happen. It's not a puzzle where you have to act quickly. It's a puzzle where you have to act at just the right time.
15. Which piece of music from "Gabriel Knight 1" does not appear in "Gabriel Knight 2?"

Answer: The Lake Ponchartrain theme

There's a little bit of variation as to how these pieces of music sound in "Gabriel Knight 1" vs. how they sound in "Gabriel Knight 2," but they are basically the same themes.

The police station theme is the same in both games, with one difference. In Mosely's office you get a different piece of music. In Leber's office you get the regular police station theme.

Wolfgang's theme is heard when you are hunting Von Zell at the end of chapter 5.

The music that plays over the ending credits of "Gabriel Knight 1" is Act 1 of Wagner's lost wolf opera, and can be heard when Grace is hanging the "Privat" sign on the door to the Mittel Loge.

The Lake Ponchartrain theme is one of my all-time favorite pieces of video game music, but sadly it doesn't appear anywhere in "Gabriel Knight 2".
