Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the warrior in "Halo: Combat Evolved" that we all knew and admired with the cool green armor? We fought the game through his or her eyes.

Answer: Master Chief

Master Chief was a cybernetically enhanced soldier. He was kidnapped as a child and transformed in a laboratory into a special forces operative. His combat armor could sustain substantial damage and regenerate strength when given a moment to recover. We never saw his face. His force operatives were called Spartans. He was named Spartan 117.
2. "Halo: Combat Evolved" was a first person shooter. What does that mean to you as a video gamer?

Answer: your actions are seen through your characters eyes

First person shooters give the player the view as would be seen through the protagonist's eyes. In a third person shooter, the avatar is seen from the back. In a first person shooter, you see the hands and gun only, which leads to some pretty funny scenes as your character runs, hands pumping in front of him or her. First person shooters dominate the market at the moment.
3. Who was Cortana?

Answer: Artificial Intelligence avatar

Cortana was an Artificial Intelligence program taken from the Pillar of Autumn. Her hologram and voice was that of a young woman. She assisted Master Chief in planning his campaign and was placed in a neural implant in the Master Chiefs armor to accompany him.
4. A warthog was delivered to us early in the game and boy was it fun! What was it?

Answer: light reconnaissance vehicle

The warthog was a M12 Force Application Vehicle, used for light reconnaissance and sported a machine gun at the back and a seat for another shooter besides the driver. The machine gun wasn't very powerful but you could take that baby anywhere. Well, one usually got the thing stuck in the rocks at the worst time, but that is another story. You could enter and leave as you liked and sometimes it was a good idea to let the gunner pin down the opponents as you flanked to the objective.
5. The little guys (Grunts) running around saying funny things and who were annoying but not too dangerous had a gas tank on their back. What did it hold?

Answer: methane

Grunts came from a world where methane was the dominant gas and they had to carry their supply of methane with them. They were the cannon fodder of the plot and usually you had to destroy a gang of them to reach your objective. They weren't too powerful and had little pistols which weren't much of a threat.

They could overwhelm you with numbers but a grenade usually thinned their ranks. They had funny dialogue, though, so it was fun to see what they would say next. Often, you could melee your way through them.
6. We met two large creatures in the game called Hunters that were hard to kill and I spent hours running away from them. What type of organisms were they?

Answer: a hive

Hunters, unlike all the other members of the Covenant, were a hive of worm-like organisms called Lekgolo with a single consciousness and unified action. They always travelled in pairs and carried a fuel rod cannon and a shield. That made them very tough to beat. A rear assault usually did the trick, but they kept turning around!
7. Which studio created "Halo 1"? (Note: They did all the rest of the versions as well but not the "Anniversary Edition".)

Answer: Bungie

Bungie is a video game developer based in Bellevue, Washington, USA. The corporation was founded by University of Chicago undergraduate, Alex Seropian. The company developed a number of games until being acquired by Microsoft for the purpose of developing "Halo: Combat Evolved". They have sold billions of dollars of the game of "Halo: Combat Evolved" and it's successors.
8. In "Halo: Combat Evolved", who was the main enemy force?

Answer: the Covenant

The Covenant were the main antagonists in "Halo:Combat Evolved" and were a group of alien life forms bonded by a common religion. Their ranks included Grunts, Hunters, Jackals and Elites. The Elites were the toughest of the bunch and occasionally had invisibility cloaking and a deadly sword.

The mixture of their forces made the game exciting and varied although having to repeatedly kill them could be tedious.
9. What was the ring-like object that the Pillar of Autumn crash-landed on at the beginning of the game?

Answer: Halo

Halo, as it was called by the Covenant, was a ring world over which surface could be found a number of different environments, which must mean that it held it's own gravity. It was terrestrial over its inner surface. We discovered, near the end of the game, that Halo existed as a device to destroy all sentient life forms when activated by the release of the Flood.
10. I hated the Flood when I encountered them, but what were they?

Answer: a parasitic alien race

The Flood were a parasitic alien life form that could infest and take over a character. They were contained on Halo but their release threatened the galaxy. This awoke the Artificial Intelligence program called Guilty Spark on Halo. Master Chief was recruited to help find the activation key or Index that turned Halo on.
11. The audio on "Halo: Combat Evolved" was terrific and added a lot to the gameplay, quickening the pulse like a horde of Elites. Who was the composer?

Answer: Martin O'Donnell

Martin O'Donnell won acclaim for his work with Bungie on "Halo: Combat Evolved". The music wasn't ever-present by design and matched the mood of the particular scene being played. He felt that music shouldn't be "sonic wallpaper" but an active part of the game itself. Rolling Stone granted the soundtrack of "Halo: Combat Evolved" the "Best Original Soundtrack" status.
12. Does anyone remember how the game "Halo: Combat Evolved" started, before we knew what we were in for? What is the first scene?

Answer: the Pillar of Autumn is preparing to do battle with the Covenant Fleet

The Pillar of Autumn has just reentered normal space from slip-space and the Covenant Fleet has beat her to the punch. Preparations are made to defend the ship, one of which includes reawakening Master Chief from hibernation at Cortana's command. Our first meeting with our hero, it threatens to be an epic battle.
13. What was the technical term for our main warriors battle armor?

Answer: MJOLNIR Mark V

MJOLNIR Mark V armor, with its characteristic green color, became one of the icons of our generation of gamers. It has been reproduced for current human use and has served as a model for an anti-bear suit recently developed. I would rather meet an Elite than an angry bear.
14. How did Avery Junior Johnson fit into the game plot?

Answer: African-American Marine Sergeant Major

Sergeant Major Avery Junior Johnson was an African-American Marine who led the human forces in the fight against the Covenant and the Flood. Interestingly, you could kill Johnson with impunity. I never did, though, as there were always enough enemies around without killing my friends. In later versions, we find that Johnson couldn't be infected by the flood.
15. How does "Halo: Combat Evolved" end?

Answer: the main character escapes in a space craft

In the end, Master Chief and Cortana set the self-destruct mechanism on the Pillar of Autumn and rush to escape on a space craft. They watched as the Pillar of Autumn exploded destroying the Halo device. Master chief asked if there were any survivors and Cortana replied that a scan showed only dust and echoes.

The last words that we hear are from Master Chief, declaring that "...we are just getting started."
