Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bowser is Mario's primary nemesis. What title does he go by?

Answer: King

King Bowser Koopa first appeared in "Super Mario Bros." for the NES, and has been Mario's primary nemesis since that title. He has appeared in most of the Mario titles. In all titles since "Super Mario Bros. 3", he has been portrayed as having red hair. According to Nintendo, this red hair had always been present in the concept of Bowser as a character, but due to the technical limitations of the day Nintendo was not able to give him hair in the original "Super Mario Bros."

Also, while Miyamoto developed the original NES title, he developed a dinosaur companion for Mario, who ultimately became Yoshi, but could not implement him a Mario title until the Super Nintendo's "Super Mario World".
2. In most Mario games, who does Bowser kidnap?

Answer: Princess Peach Toadstool

In the United States the Princess was known as Princess Toadstool. In Japan, however, Nintendo named her Princess Peach. In 1996, in "Super Mario 64", Nintendo combined the names and named her Princess Peach Toadstool in all regions. The first game that the Princess became more than a damsel in distress was "Super Mario Bros. 2", where Nintendo promoted her to a playable character.
3. How many of Bowser's children appear in "Super Mario Bros. 3"?

Answer: Seven

The Koopalings first appear in "Super Mario Bros. 3" on the NES. They have appeared in several games since then, including "Super Mario World", "New Super Mario Bros.", "New Super Mario Bros. Wii", and several others. In 2002, we learn of another child of Bowser, named Bowser Jr.
4. What is the first enemy you meet in "Super Mario Bros."?

Answer: Goomba

World 1-1 features two enemies, Goombas and Koopa Troopas. Since their debut in "Super Mario Bros.", Nintendo has features these two enemies quite regularly, and appear in a wide variety of games and media.
5. In one game, Bowser has been evicted, and during the course of the game joins forces with Mario and his friends so he can get his castle back. What's the game?

Answer: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

In the very opening section of the game, Bowser kidnaps Princess Peach, Mario goes into Bowser's castle, and during the fight with Bowser, a giant sword named Exor falls from the sky, and claims ownership of Bowser's castle. About halfway through the game, Mario meets up with Bowser, and they ally against Exor and his master Smithy, though the only reason Bowser converts to the good side is so he can get his castle back.
6. Mario isn't always the hero in the series. One game reverses the roles of Mario and Princess Peach. The game is "Super Princess Peach". What platform did Nintendo release this title on?

Answer: Nintendo DS

In a true reversal of fortune, in "Super Princess Peach" Bowser kidnaps Mario, Luigi, and several Toad retainers, and it is up to Peach to rescue her man. One of the Toads gives Princess Peach a talking Umbrella named Perry, who is Princess Peach's primary ally in her adventure.
7. What game features Shyguys, Beezos, Bomb Ombs, Ostros, Birdo, Snifits, and Tweeters?

Answer: Super Mario Bros. 2

Shyguys and Bomb Ombs have gone on to be main staples in the Mario series. The other enemies mentioned in that list have not really be reused. The bosses of "Super Mario Bros. 2", Mouser, Fryguy, Clawgrip, Triclyde, and Wart have not made an appearance since that game.
8. Not only are some of the villains Mario encounters just bad guys, there are those among the legions of evil and servants of Bowser who are just pure thieves. One such thief is Klepto, a giant vulture from "Super Mario 64". What level does Klepto appear in?

Answer: Shifting Sand Land

Klepto holds the first star in "Shifting Sand Lands". For Mario to recover the star, he must jump from one of the pillars and knock the star out of Klepto's talons, or don a Wing Cap and ram the thieving bird. A bird species named Kleptos also appear in the "Mario Party" series.
9. In "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island", the Stork was carrying two infants, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi. Suddenly, one of the Koopa minions appears and kidnaps Luigi and knocks Mario out of the sky and onto Yoshi Island. Chronologically, this is Mario's first encounter with the Koopas. Which enemy is responsible for knocking Mario out of the sky?

Answer: Kamek the Magikoopa

Kamek is the main villain of the Yoshi series. His name derives its root from the Japanese term for Turtle. He is a high ranking, older Koopa and was guardian of Bowser when he was a baby.
10. I thought I would go back to the beginning of Mario's history. Mario has a hard time keeping track of his love interests. They tend to get kidnapped frequently by otherworldly monsters. Who is the first villain Mario ever had to fight to retrieve one of his love interests?

Answer: Donkey Kong

When the Nintendo arcade title "Radar Scope" sold poorly, Shigeru Miyamoto, under Gunpei Yokoi's direction, converted the game into a more spellable product. His primary focus was on the gameplay, not the story. This focus on gameplay over story remains true to this day of Miyamoto, who said when developing "Super Mario Galaxy 2" he did not want the story to get in the way of the actual game. This may explain the convoluted-beyond-repair timelines of the "Zelda" games. The game became Nintendo's first major hit, and also the world's first introduction to that famous plumber from Brooklyn, Mario.

Tatanga comes from "Super Mario Land". "Super Mario Land" is notable for being developed by Miyamoto's mentor, Gunpei Yokoi, who developed the Game Boy.
