Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which country was Notch, the founder of "Minecraft", originally born in?

Answer: Sweden

Notch both grew up in Sweden and was born there, although he has made his way around the world to various gaming conventions, business meetings, and vacations often. He has been to Las Vegas for Minecon, to Malaysia for deep-sea diving, to Washington for a meeting with Valve, a gaming corporation, and many different venues for the various awards "Minecraft" has won over the years.
2. What is Notch's full name?

Answer: Markus A. Persson

Notch's full name is spelled as Markus A. Persson, with the surname pronounced like "Pear-son." His middle name is Alexej.

Markus' de facto online alias while creating "Minecraft" was "Notch", and he has produced electronica music under the slightly different name Alexei Persson.
3. Which of these companies developed and created "Minecraft", the company that Notch founded?

Answer: Mojang

Mojang means "gadget" in Swedish. Notch founded this company when "Minecraft" became much too big for him to handle alone. Along with merely programming and play-testing "Minecraft," he had to be able to juggle the customer support, the finances, the business decisions, and more, all along with his personal life.
4. Within the version that they were added and for months afterward, which was true about gold tools only?

Answer: Gold pickaxes mine smooth stone faster than diamond pickaxes, but don't last as long

Gold tools were nowhere near as popular as diamond tools due to their quick lifespans, and the lack of available gold in game. However, an opulent crafter with great amounts of gold might have found it better to use gold instead of diamond (or any other tool) pickaxes to mine smooth or cobbled stone, as it cut through these blocks a few fractions of a second faster per block.

(They were added in version 0.31, the update Notch released and mentioned on his Tumblr account on January 29, 2010.)
5. Which company/game did Notch not work on/for at any time?

Answer: Deadwhale.com

Notch has had programming experience with all of these companies in his past, excluding Deadwhale.com.

Jalbum is a photo-album site, for which Notch worked with for a few years early on in his career.

King.com is a game site, where he worked for 4-5 years making simple flash games.

"Wurm Online" was a game (and a company) similar to "Minecraft" in the sense that Notch was a founder of it, and it was an online java game. Notch left it to his coworkers to progress on it without him.

Info is from the "Notch" section of Mojang's website.
6. Notch added a smoldering effect to the enemy creepers' explosions early on in their making. What was the incentive for this, as Notch revealed?

Answer: Notch took a liking to a comedic fan art of a smoldering creeper crater

On his blog, Notch reposted a picture of the fan art in question, and he stated how he liked it. He decided to quickly add in the effect, and he said that he liked the effect.

In the game, when TNT was added, it had the same explosion effect, which makes sense as the creepers drop gunpowder, the main ingredient that was used to make TNT.

7. What was the first full name for "Minecraft", after the tentative "Cave Game" phase?

Answer: "Minecraft: Order of the Stone"

A little known fact is that the full name of "Minecraft" was, at a time, called "Minecraft: Order of the Stone", a reference to "Order of the Stick", a webcomic Notch loved.

Notch, at the very beginning of "Minecraft" in its infancy, merely referred to "Minecraft" as "Cave game" in the first video he recorded on its progress.

8. The urban legend mob "Herobrine" is described as a regular "Minecraft Steve" (the default player), except for which startling difference?

Answer: Lack of pupils

Instead of two pixels of black for the pupils, these are replaced by white pixels, giving the illusion his pupils are either missing or turned inside his head.

Another myth of Herobrine is that he is a mob added in by Notch in memoriam of his dead sibling.

Notch has publicly stated on his blog posts that Herobrine was not in the game, but he did plan on adding him someday (which he, in later interviews, changed his mind about).
9. Which one of these songs is not from C418's "Minecraft - Alpha Volume"?

Answer: Salon Palace

Among these oddly named pieces by C418, "Salon Palace" does not exist.

The album itself was released in March 2011 by C418 himself. At the time, it included every song within the game, as well as fifteen minutes of bonus songs not in the game.

C418 has produced more than "Minecraft" ambiance, though, with albums dating before and after "Minecraft", such as "I Forgot Something, Didn't I" and "Seven Years of Server Data".
10. When Bethesda was filing a lawsuit against Notch's company over misuse of the word "Scrolls" in one of Notch's games, what game did Notch publicly challenge his legal opponent to?

Answer: "Quake 3"

In August 2011, Notch publicly challenged Bethesda to a game of "Quake 3" to settle the dispute.

If Notch won, Bethesda would drop the lawsuit.

If Bethesda won, Notch would rename his upcoming "Scrolls" game as per Bethesda's desires.

Either way, Notch was willing to add a disclaimer stating how "Scrolls" was not related to Bethesda's "Elder Scrolls" series.
