Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The beginning of the first stage, 2-1, Drybake Desert, has a giant door with six symbols where Mario must paperize stickers. Which of these is a sticker Mario must stick on the door?

Answer: Poison Mushroom

This is a puzzle that stumps many new players. When Mario approaches the door, Kersti will inspect the door and question why there are two Mushroom icons. If Mario places a normal Mushroom sticker on the one on the right, it will peel off and Kersti will look closer at it.

She will observe that it seems more evil, of a sort. Paperizing a Poison Mushroom sticker there will work, and with the other five stickers, a Jump, a Hammer, a Mushroom, a Spike Helmet, and a Fire Flower, the door will open and Mario can continue.
2. After coming out of the cave past the door in 2-1, a new enemy is visible between the Save Block and the Recovery Block. Wearing a sombrero, it is a variation of which enemy?

Answer: Shy Guy

The Sombrero Guy is a new enemy that appears many, many times in the desert. When Mario battles it, it has 15 HP. It will either throw its sombrero at Mario to attack him, heal all enemies in battle, or raise the attack of every enemy for two to three turns, including itself.

It generally will jump into nearby initiated battles from the field. In the field, it will simply stand there and play its ukulele. If damaged or alone in a battle, Sombrero Guys will often, although not always, run away from the battle. If Mario defeats it before it runs away, it may drop a Sombrero sticker, which lets Mario throw a sombrero at an enemy.
3. Continuing through the first desert area, Mario will find enemies that are whaling on a poor Toad; the same Toad Mario rescued before in 1-2, Bouquet Gardens! Mario can either choose to pay, or he can battle the enemies. What will he battle if he does?

Answer: Five-Fold Paragoomba

Five Paragoombas are attacking the Toad. If Mario talks to them, they say they will give him up for 25 coins or Mario will have to fight them. A Sombrero Guy is lurking behind some rocks in the field; if Mario does not defeat it beforehand, it will join the battle.

In battle, they will merge into a Five-Fold Paragoomba, which has 40 HP and attacks by creating a tornado above Mario. After saving the Toad, he talks about his journey to the desert for treasure and gives Mario a Shiny Mushroom sticker in return, which will heal 40-60 HP.

He breaks the fourth wall by mentioning the desert music, which he says is crazy and never stops.
4. Probably the most missed normal sticker of the whole game, a big sticker resides in a block in an area that is behind some rocks at the top of the giant sand hill. What sticker lies there?

Answer: Big 1UP

Many players miss this sticker because of the hidden area it is in. Inside is a big ? Block which contains the Big 1UP sticker. It is a green-and-white 1-Up Mushroom on a red background, and it has a sticker size of 1.5 x 1.5, meaning that both sides are 1.5 times longer than a normal sticker.

When used, the sticker will gradually heal Mario's HP over ten turns. There is a Shiny and more effective version of this sticker that Mario can get later in the game.
5. During 2-2, Yoshi Sphinx, the Comet Piece is easy to get to. But, in order to retrieve the treasure of the sphinx, Mario must travel past the Comet Piece into another room.

Answer: True

After battling three Red Koopa Paratroopas to get to the Comet Piece, Mario must continue through the next room, ignoring the Comet Piece. After navigating through the rest of the Sphinx, Mario will emerge from the Yoshi's eyes and must drop onto its tongue to reach the treasure. Mario must battle Kamek first, and then he can open the treasure, which will give him a Tablet Piece Scrap.
6. When Mario approaches the treasure of the Yoshi Sphinx, Kamek appears and battles Mario after placing a spell on the Sticker Album. What happens to Mario's stickers?

Answer: They are all flip-flopped into Sandal stickers

Kamek shoots a spell at the Sticker Album that turns all of Mario's stickers into Sandal stickers. They are basically weak Eekhammers that deal a constant number of damage. Shiny tickers, Flashy stickers, and Big stickers will turn into Shiny Sandals, Flashy Sandals, and Big Sandals, respectively, which will deal more damage than normal Sandal stickers. Any Sandals used will use up the sticker that turned into that Sandal, so if Mario does not know which sticker turned into which, then he has a risk of using up a Sandal sticker that was from a sticker he wanted. Kamek only has 20 HP, and will attack by either shooting a spell at Mario or flying into him on his broom.

After taking some damage, Kamek will fly a little higher above the ground, rendering the Sandals ineffective. Kersti tells Mario he has to tough it out when he does that. Mario can either use Jump stickers that are given to him when Kamek flies into him, or just wait until he comes back down.

After defeating him, the Sandals are turned back into normal stickers, and Mario is free to grab the treasure, which is a Tablet Piece Scrap. Kamek does appear and turn Mario's stickers into Sandals again much later in the game.
7. In 2-3, Sandshifter Ruins, the ruins is a maze that Mario must navigate. Ignoring any doors, what is the correct pathway to the exit?

Answer: Right, Right, Left, Left

Going left, left, then right will bring Mario to a sand pillar that is an exit. Going right, right, and then right leads to another exit. Going right, right, left, then right will lead Mario to a door that leads into a room that will bring him to the same exit as if he had gone right, right, and then right.

There are some gears that will turns when Mario falls into them, and after going right, right, left, and left, a gear will turn as he reaches the goal. If Mario plays this level again and takes the same path, he will fall onto a ledge with a door that leads to the secret exit. If he wants, he can jump down to the goal or to the exit from going left, left, and then right.
8. Which of these Things cannot be found in Sandshifter Ruins?

Answer: Lightbulb

The Lightbulb is found in 2-2, Yoshi Sphinx. If Mario goes past the Comet Piece for the treasure, then on the way some lit torches will be on the wall. One of the torches has the Lightbulb on it. If Mario jumps into it three times, it will fall and Mario can grab it.

It is needed later in the game. In Sandshifter Ruins, Mario can get the Jackhammer by going one of three ways. One way is going left, left, and right. Another way is going left, right, then right. The third way is to go right, left, and then left.

After doing so, Mario must jump over the sand spout to reach the Jackhammer. To get the Magnifying Glass, Mario must travel right, and then go right, but instead of going down the sand waterfall the second time, go through the door past it.

The second closed standing coffin from the left has a heart inside it, but Mario can go through the coffin into another room, which has the Magnifying Glass. To get the Bat, Mario must navigate through the maze. It is in the third closed standing coffin from the left in the first room of the end.

The Bat sticker is very helpful for the boss of World 2.
9. In 2-4, Damp Oasis, after filling up the oasis, you can go inside a Toad's house and climb to the roof. On the roof is a Thing called what?

Answer: Shaved Ice

The Shaved Ice is a red Thing on the roof of the house. Mario can access the roof by opening up the window blind in the house. An invisible block is also on the barrel up there that contains a Burnhammer sticker. The Shaved Ice sticker is needed later in the game.

A treasure chest is also in the house that contains a Tablet Piece Scrap. If Mario talks to the Toad, who is floating on a raft in the pool in the oasis, then he will say that the desert wind blew it there, and that Mario can take it if he wants, as he has no use for it.
10. Okay, maybe I exaggerated the "I Can't Feel My Face!" part, as only really one part of one of the levels has desert winds so strong to make one's face go numb. Requiring the Vacuum sticker to suck up, which level has a part where the desert is really windy and sandy?

Answer: 2-4 Damp Oasis

The sand is blowing through the wind and it is hard to see things in the screen. On the world map, Mario can actually see the palm trees blowing. In order to get rid of the sand, Mario must find the Vacuum at Surfshine Harbor and sling it into a sticker.

Then he must paperize the sticker at the conveniently placed outlet next to the dust devil blocking entryway into the oasis. After the Vacuum sucks up the twister, it turns flat and falls as a bridge to the oasis, and the wind and sand stop. The Vacuum also sucks up the Comet Piece, and spits it out nearby.

Inside the oasis, Mario must use the Faucet sticker to fill up the oasis, as it is dried up.
