Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I always get excited when I find diamonds while mining. In which level range can diamonds be discovered?

Answer: The bottom 16 levels

Diamond ore is considered to be the second-rarest ore in the game, after emeralds. In a chunk (a 16x16 area starting from level one) there is an average of 3.097 diamond ore to be found (according to the "Minecraft" Wiki), with the highest likelihood of discovery being on levels five and twelve.

Thus is explained my joy when discovering diamond ore!
2. There is the odd time, when sprinting across the plains, that I suddenly find myself at the bottom of a chasm with only a half a heart of health left. If I had full health and no enchanted armor, how far would I have fallen (number of blocks) to experience this great fortune of not dying?

Answer: 22 blocks

When at full health, you have 10 hearts. When falling, you lose a half-heart per block that you fall... AFTER the first three blocks. So, you can fall down a distance of three blocks without receiving any damage, but at four blocks you would get half a heart's worth.

So at two blocks per full heart of damage, you could safely fall 19 blocks after the first three, for a total of 22 blocks. At block number 23 of your fall (without any enchantments on your armor), you die.
3. There are a number of passive mobs in "Minecraft", but I am always happy to come across an ocelot because, once fed fish, they scare away zombies.

Answer: False

In all, "Minecraft" has 10 passive mobs: chicken, cow, pig, sheep, horse, squid, bat, villager, mooshroom, and, of course, ocelot. I should note here that ocelots are also considered a tameable mob.

Ocelots can be found in or near jungles, and if you can entice one to eat some fish, it will turn into a 'tame' cat which will scare away creepers. And if you happen to get too far away from your cat, it will teleport to stay close to you (unless you manually made it sit by right-clicking it).
4. I love when I'm digging in a mineshaft and I come across stone bricks, because then I KNOW I've discovered my favorite structure. What is it?

Answer: A stronghold

Strongholds are found underground and are the only structures made from stone bricks. A stronghold is a valuable find not only for its rarity (there are only 3 in the "Minecraft" world), but also for the fact that there is an End Portal inside. Strongholds also (usually) have several chests within which various and sundry items can be found, such as armor, golden apples, and Ender pearls.
5. Horses spawn on plains or savannahs, and can be tamed so that you can ride them (with a saddle). It's really great to get one if for no other reason than the ability to travel faster. Which of these foods will a horse NOT accept?

Answer: Carrots

It is possible to tame a horse on the first attempt, but the probability is near zero. It typically takes five to six attempts to tame (right-click) the horse to accomplish it. Feeding a horse the foods from the list below will also increase the odds of taming, as well as provide health for the horse, as per the list below:

Sugar (1/2 heart healing, +3% taming probability)
Wheat (1 heart healing, +3% taming probability)
Apple (1 1/2 heart healing, +3% taming probability)
Golden carrot (2 heart healing, +5% taming probability, activates love mode)
Bread (3 1/2 heart healing, +3% taming probability)
Golden apple (5 heart healing, +10% taming probability, activates love mode)
Hay bale (10 heart healing)

It should also be noted that it is possible to ride a tame horse WITHOUT a saddle, but you cannot control it unless you have one.
6. I enjoy finding villages. They can be an emergency shelter when being attacked by aggressive mobs, and that's where you can find carrots and potatoes. Mostly, though, I like that you can trade with the villagers. What 'currency' do villagers use?

Answer: Emeralds

Villagers will accept emeralds for different items, depending on the type of villager, although what you get from a villager can vary even between villagers of the same type. There are six different types: farmers, blacksmiths, butchers, librarians, priests, and generic (note that the generic villager is only spawned through cheats, and does not naturally spawn).

It is also possible to trade items TO a villager to obtain emeralds in return.
7. A very rare biome that I've only come across a couple of times is Mushroom Island. Just due to its scarcity makes discovering it a joyous event. What is the only kind of mob that naturally spawns on the island?

Answer: Mooshrooms

I love mooshrooms; they are such a creative invention. As the name implies, they are essentially mushroom cows. They are red and white in color and the adults have five red mushrooms on their backs. These can be 'harvested' by shearing the mooshroom, but if you do that it becomes a simple cow. Also, if you use a bowl and milk (right click) a mooshroom, you end up with mushroom stew.
8. I always consider it a boon to find an abandoned mineshaft. In addition to the stuff that can be found just laying around, there are also chests located in minecarts with goodies. Which of these will you NOT find in a minecart chest?

Answer: Golden Apples

There are many wonderful things that can be found within the minecart chests in addition to melon seeds, enchanted books and iron horse armor, items such as bread, pumpkin seeds, iron ingots, coal, redstone, gold ingots, lapis lazuli, diamonds, saddles, rails, and iron pickaxes.

Some of the other things that can be found in an abandoned mineshaft are various types of ores, wooden planks and fences, spiderwebs (that drop string), and anything else that you normally find underground.
9. You'd think roaming a desert would be a waste of time, but not if you happen to come across a pyramid. They are great finds because they each have four chests with valuable items. You just have to be careful about the booby trap. How many TNT blocks comprise the booby trap?

Answer: Nine

In the center of the pyramid (also called a desert temple) beneath the floor is the secret room where the four chests are found. The middle of the floor has a blue wool block, and directly beneath that (a 12 block fall) is a pressure plate that, if you land on it, will detonate the 3x3 subfloor of TNT, destroying the four chests and killing you.

So, don't go in down the hole beneath the blue wool.
10. I like making potions (they're very useful), and in order to make potions you need to go to the Nether. A Nether fortress or in soul sand patches are the only places to find the base ingredient needed for every potion. What is it?

Answer: Nether wart

To make a potion, one begins with one to three water bottles (a brewing stand holds up to three bottles), and then you add Nether wart, which creates an 'Awkward Potion'. From there, other ingredients will make different potions, and some additives change the properties of a potion.

The incorrect answer option ingredients have the following effects:

Blaze powder (added to an Awkward Potion) makes a 'Potion of Strength'.
Magma cream (added to an Awkward Potion) makes a 'Potion of Fire Resistance'.
Glowstone dust can be added to many different potions, and it has the effect of increasing its potency.
