Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Kanto Gym Leader is American by nationality? (Hint: He is the same one who has an affinity for traps and making challengers search through garbage cans.)

Answer: Lt. Surge

Lt. Surge, a specialist of Electric Pokémon, is nicknamed "the Lightning American" according to the sign posted outside of the Vermillion City Gym. He also served in the Army as a pilot. Interestingly, in "Black 2" and "White 2" (DS) an NPC in the Pokémon World Tournament questions whether or not Lt. Surge is from Unova.

This is an inside joke since Unova is based on the United States.
2. In "Heart Gold" and "Soul Silver" (DS), Brock, the Pewter City Gym Leader, will trade which Pokémon in exchange for a Bonsly?

Answer: Rhydon

This is clearly a reference to the anime where Brock owned a Bonsly. The Rhydon the player received knows the move Thunder Fang, which is an egg move, another reference to the anime where Brock breeds Pokémon.
3. Which Kanto Gym Leader became an actor at Pokestar Studios in "Black 2"/"White 2?"

Answer: Sabrina

Sabrina plays a villain named Magic Queen Bellelba in some of the missions. It is unknown if she gave up her career as the Psychic type leader of Saffron City Gym to become an actress. Brycen, a former Unova Gym Leader, gave up his gym to become an actor because he didn't have enough time to do both.
4. In "Heart Gold" and "Soul Silver", Giovanni, the former Viridian Gym Leader and Team Rocket boss, is on a search for which legendary Pokémon?

Answer: Celebi

This Celebi event was part of a special event storyline in the games that was unlocked with a special downloadable Celebi. Much of the event is a flashback to what Giovanni was doing between the events of the first generation games and the second generation games (and their remakes.)
5. Koga is the poison-type leader of the Fuchsia City Gym in "Red", "Blue" and "Yellow" (Gameboy) and "Fire Red" and "Leaf Green". (GBA) However, by the events of "Gold", "Silver", and "Crystal" (Gameboy Color) and their remakes, Koga is no longer a gym leader but holds what position?

Answer: Member of the Elite Four

Koga is the second member of the Elite Four fought in those games. He still specializes in poison type Pokémon. He was replaced as Fuchsia City Gym Leader by his daughter Janine.
6. Which Kanto gym leader loves putting potential challengers through a trivia contest before battles? (Hint: When he moved his gym in "Gold", "Silver", and "Crystal", he abandoned the trivia game.)

Answer: Blaine

Blaine is nicknamed "The Hotheaded Quiz Master" because of his affinity for asking trivia questions, all of which are relatively easy for the players to answer. Blaine's gimmick of asking questions to advance in his gym is shared with Fantina of Hearthome City in "Diamond", "Pearl" and "Platinum" (DS) and Clemont of Lumiose City in "X" and "Y" (3DS).
7. In "Gold", "Silver", and "Crystal" and their remakes, where is Misty the first time the player meets her?

Answer: On a date

In order to challenge Misty, the player must first interrupt her date with an unknown suitor on Cerulean Cape. Misty is the water-type specialist of Kanto and one of Ash's traveling companions in the anime series.
8. Which of the following is true about Erika's Celadon City Gym in every main series game it appears in?

Answer: There are only female trainers inside

Erika only has female trainers in her gym. In fact, in "Red", "Blue", and "Yellow" and their remakes, the gym guide, who is male, is in the Game Corner not in the gym like usual. The fact that Erika only has female trainers is the subject of a joke in the games where an old man can be seen peeking in through the window.

Erika uses grass type Pokémon, not poison type, though some are duel grass-poison. Erika is not rebattleable until "Heart Gold" and "Soul Silver". Cut is the HM often needed to complete the puzzle in her gym or access the gym in the first place.
9. In "Fire Red" and "Leaf Green", if one were to read the Fame Checker item, which future Kanto gym leader is mistakenly referred to as Charine?

Answer: Janine

Janine is Koga's daughter who is a gym leader in "Gold", "Silver", and "Crystal", their remakes and from Generation 5 and on, according to the Pokémon World Tournament in "Black 2" and "White 2". However, in "Fire Red" and "Leaf Green", which is set chronologically before those games, Janine is still a child and not yet a gym leader.

The player can speak to her and she will given information about her father. The Fame Checker will record her name as Charine.
10. Blue did not become the Viridian City Gym Leader until "Gold", "Silver", and "Crystal". In "Red", "Blue", and "Yellow", what position did Blue hold?

Answer: Indigo League Champion

Blue was the champion of the Indigo League during "Red", "Blue", and "Yellow", although he did not have that name unless he was given it by the player. He functioned as the player's rival, who is the Gary Oak counterpart from the anime series. He became the Viridian Gym Leader after Giovanni resigned.
