Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The player started the game as Gwydion, a young slave to an evil wizard. What was the wizard's name?

Answer: Manannan

Mordack was Manannan's brother and was introduced in the fifth game of the series. Lucreto was the villain in the eighth game. Shadrack was referred to in the sixth game but never actually appeared in the official "King's Quest" series. Many fans of the game were angered when they first bought this game.

The first two games starred Graham who became king of Daventry in the first and then married the princess Valanice in the second. When this game started the player as a mere servant who had seemingly no relation to the royal family, many fans were disappointed and wrote letters to Sierra.

It was not until a few months later, when players had had enough time to progress to the end of the game (there were no hint books or hint hot lines at the time), that Gwydion's relationship to the royal family was discovered.
2. Gwydion discovered an old spell book in his master's secret laboratory, and used it to perform several spells. What was the name of this book?

Answer: The Sorcery of Old

A Magical Primer was an essay written by Prince Alexander (Gwydion)in Peter Spear's book "The King's Quest Companion". Al Azif, also known as the "Necronomicon", was a magical volume that Alexander mentioned in this essay.
3. Gwydion searched his master's house for useful objects. What did he find on top of the wizard's wardrobe?

Answer: A key

The map that Gwydion found was inside the wardrobe rather than on top of it. The mirror he found was in the wizard's nightstand, and the bowl that he used in the kitchen. The key that he found was used to open the cupboard in the office, where Manannan kept his magic wand.
4. Gwydion had to buy supplies from the general store to perform several of the spells. How did he pay for these?

Answer: He used the money he stole from the bandits

Gwydion discovered a purse with four gold coins in it in the bandits hideout. The hideout was hidden in the top of an acorn tree, accessed by a ladder that dropped down when a hidden rope was pulled.
5. How did Gwydion manage to gain his freedom?

Answer: He turned the wizard into a cat

Gwydion used the spell book to make a magic cookie that turns the one who eats it into a cat. He disguised the cookie in a bowl of porridge and gave it to Manannan, who ate it and became a cat. Gwydion couldn't actually kill Manannan, and if he tried run away without dealing with Manannan first, the wizard would find and kill him.
6. Which of these ingredients was not used in the Understanding the Language of Creatures spell?

Answer: Saffron

Saffron was used in the Flying Like and Eagle or a Fly spell. Sierra used the spells as a form of copyright protection. In order to complete the spells correctly, the player had to have the recipes for each. These recipes could only be found in the manual that came with the game. Any illegal copies of the game could not be completed.
7. Gwydion was almost what age when the game began?

Answer: Eighteen

Manannan did not allow his slaves to live beyond the age of eighteen. He thought that the young men would become too curious and troublesome when they reached manhood. Many times he had too much trouble with them even before they reached eighteen years and would kill them early.
8. Gwydion eventually found out his true name, who his family was, and that he was from Daventry. What was his real name?

Answer: Alexander

Graham was the name Gwydion's father, the king of Daventry. Conner was the name of the protagonist in the eighth game. Cedric was the name of the owl that accompanied Graham on his journey in the fifth game. Gwydion started to find out who he really was by talking to an Oracle, and he also found out some information by listening to animals once he had completed the Understanding the Language of Creatures spell.
9. In order to return to Daventry, Gwydion had to cross the ocean. How did he do this?

Answer: He gained passage on a ship.

The ocean is to wide for Gwydion to cross even transformed as an eagle. Gwydion's father Graham was the one who befriended a fish, in the second game. Graham was also the one guided by a mermaid in the fifth game, to Mordack's castle. Gwydion did buy passage on a ship, but the crew turned out to be pirates and he had to escape by placing a sleeping spell on the entire crew.
10. When Gwydion reached Daventry, he could have dug for buried treasure on the beach. Where was this treasure located?

Answer: Five paces east of the palm tree

If Gwydion made the Understanding the Language of Creatures spell, he would have overheard some of the rats on the pirates' ship talking about the location of the pirates' treasure. He could then steal a shovel from the pirates before escaping an uncover the treasure. The treasure served no real purpose however, except for gaining the player more points.
