Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the second person to speak in the introduction?

Answer: Dr. Pippin Carter

Dr. Carter is an archaeologist who digs up an ancient tomb in Egypt and finds the object mentioned in the sub-title of the game. He then takes it to the United States. The Egyptian man in the intro is upset about this, as he believes the dagger should be left where it was found. Dr. Carter tells him that if he doesn't like it, he should complain to his own government, which suggests the U.S. government bought the dagger.

We don't find out the name of the Egyptian man until later.
2. What is in the chest that the stevedore is carrying?

Answer: A dead body

The first thing you see in the introduction is a murder. A man breaks into a bedroom, kills another man in his sleep, and stuffs him in the trunk. Later in the intro, you see the stevedore carrying the trunk, saying that "it sure is heavy" and "It smells funny." Lucky for him, he didn't see the introduction that we saw. If he did he'd probably be in trouble.
3. Aside from Laura, who is the only character from "The Colonel's Bequest" that also appears in "The Dagger of Amon Ra"?

Answer: John Bow

Laura Bow's father makes a couple of token appearances in the intro to each game and a couple of other places. In this game, he is seen preparing his daughter for a trip to New York and saying goodbye to her. He helps her get a job at a newspaper in New York.

You wouldn't expect any other character from the first "Laura Bow" game to appear in any future games. Most of them are dead, and the surviving ones will either remain on their island or go to jail.
4. What is "The New York Experience?"

Answer: Getting mugged

On the train, Laura meets a woman who has been in New York for a long time. The woman tells her that when she first stepped off the train in New York, she was mugged right away. She says it's "The New York Experience." Laura experiences two crimes as soon as she leaves the train. First, her suitcase is stolen. Then she is mugged.

I've been to New York City twice by train and neither of these things ever happened to me, so I am skeptical of the real-life accuracy of this.
5. Laura is asked to report on a what?

Answer: Burglary

The Dagger of Amon Ra has been stolen from the museum. Laura Bow has 24 hours to write a report on it or she is fired.
6. At the Tribune, Laura Bow is the only what?

Answer: Woman

The game takes place in 1926, when women mostly worked in the kitchen. Newspaper agencies didn't hire many women back then. According to Sam Augustini (Laura's boss), being a reporter is too dangerous for women. He only hired her as a favor to her father, who helped him become as successful as he was.
7. Who was originally supposed to report on the case?

Answer: Crodfuller T. Rhubarb

Crodfuller T. Rhubarb, or "Rube" as he preferred to be called, was assigned to the burglary until a more important person to Augustini, John Bow, asked for a favor. Augustini gave Laura a notebook that already had Rube's notes in it, so she had a head start in reporting on the case. Crodfuller was not happy that the case was re-assigned.
8. The detective assigned to the case is Ryan O'Riley. He isn't very concerned about the case though. Which of the following things is worse according to him?

Answer: The market is running out of grapes

When Laura Bow speaks to Mr. O'Riley about the case, he is reluctant to do so. Eventually, he gives Laura the report on the case. Laura is baffled when it is only one page long. O'Riley explains that there are many crimes in the city that are worse than an artifact being stolen. With most of the things he mentioned (people being mugged in the streets, robberies, murders) I think most sane people would agree with him. I thin being mugged is worse than an artifact being stolen, don't you? But, the last bad thing that he mentions is the market running out of grapes. That should raise suspicion.
9. Which character would the singer at the speakeasy like to meet?

Answer: Dr. Pippin Carter

At the speakeasy, they sometimes play a goofy song called "The Archaeologist Song", a 1920s pop song. Although it is difficult to understand the woman's voice, she says that she wants to marry an archaeologist. Dr. Pippin Carter is an archaeologist.
10. Which character is impersonating Ugarte from "Casablanca"?

Answer: Ziggy

Ziggy is a stool pigeon. He's a criminal who tells people about other criminals. That sounds like Ugarte from "Casablanca". In addition, the voice actor for Ziggy is clearly doing his best Peter Lorre impersonation. Apparently one Sierra game with "Casablanca" references ("Quest For Glory 2") wasn't enough.
11. What is the name of the museum?

Answer: The Leyendecker Museum

The Leyendecker Museum is a museum of natural history. It has fossils and bones of animals as well as ancient artifacts. It also has some paintings. The Leyendecker museum doesn't exist in real life, at least not in New York City.
12. Who does Laura meet and fall in love with?

Answer: Steve Dorian

Laura Bow goes to the docks and meets a handsome young deep-voice gentleman named Steve Dorian. They talk for a little while. Steve is immediately smitten, as he goes to the museum just to see her. He spends all of his money on a tuxedo to dress for the occasion, but unfortuantely has none left to buy some appropriate boots. Laura Bow is flattered by the fact that Steve Dorian spent all of his money just to see her, and so they kiss.

This subplot is sort of spoiled in "Gabriel Knight", where reading the bulletin board at Tulane University will inform you of a character named Laura Bow Dorian.
13. What is the name of the Egyptian man seen in the introduction?

Answer: Tut Smith

Tut Smith is a major suspect, as he openly admits that he wants to take the dagger out of the museum and return it to Egypt. He tells Detective O'Riley that he plans on doing it legally though.
14. Who speaks with a lisp and wears glasses?

Answer: Ramses Najeer

Ramses Najeer is the accountant for the Leyendecker museum. He is also from Egypt. He may also serve another purpose.
15. Who sleeps with every man she meets?

Answer: Yvette Delacroix

Overhearing conversations and asking every man about Yvette Delacroix will reveal that she sleeps around with lots of men. It seems none of these men know that she sleeps around like this.
