Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 Trivia Quiz

This is about the Xbox 360 version of "Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4" and my very first video games quiz. There will be questions about a little bit of everything in the game. Some knowledge of the earlier Lego games comes in handy. Good luck and enjoy!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You start at the beginning of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone". In story mode, after the first introductory cut scene, which is the first location where the actual gameplay starts?

Answer: The Leaky Cauldron

As Player 1, you will be playing Harry, who at this point does not have a wand yet. You are accompanied by Hagrid, who can do a little bit of magic for you.
The Leaky Cauldron also serves as the gaming hub, where you can choose which levels to play and enter Diagon Alley to buy characters, spells and extras.
The first level is called "The Magic Begins".
2. The six levels of every year are interrupted by interim periods at Hogwarts, which is where you acquire important skills and items that you will need to successfully complete the game. Which of the following do you NOT do at Hogwarts?

Answer: Collect House Crest pieces

Hogwarts is another hub to where you can return from the Leaky Cauldron. In story mode, you are automatically taken to Hogwarts between levels to find the things you need to proceed. In Hogwarts, Nearly Headless Nick is guiding you to the places you need to go to continue the story, such as classrooms (to learn spells) or the location where the next level takes place (such as the Quidditch pitch). Red and Gold Bricks are hidden throughout Hogwarts.

The red bricks must be posted by owl post to Diagon Alley, where you can go to buy the respective extras. Character tokens and Students in Peril can also be found there, but the Hogwarts Crest pieces are only collected in the story levels.
3. Which is the first spell that you learn in story mode in year 1?

Answer: Wingardium Leviosa

Wingardium Leviosa is the first spell you learn, and the one you definitely need most often. It is used to assemble Lego builds by magic, to help lift other characters up to reach a certain area, and to turn keys, doorknobs, etc. It is also used in most of the boss fights.
Lumos Solem is the second; you do not learn Immobulus until Year 2 (to defeat the Pixies), and Accio is not taught at all but must be purchased from Diagon Alley.
4. Compared to the earlier Lego games, such as "Lego Indiana Jones", "Lego Star Wars" or "Lego Batman", several things are now different in "Lego Harry Potter". Which of the following is NOT one of these new functions?

Answer: Skipping levels in story mode

Story mode works the same as ever: you proceed from one level to the next; you cannot skip a level.
The new split screen is practical for co-op play, as characters can now move into different directions. It is therefore less likely that you fall down from somewhere because the other character lags behind and pulls you with them.
All characters except the ones you actually use in story mode are now unlocked by finding the hidden character tokens (three in each level and the others in the hubs) and then purchasing them in Diagon Alley. They are pretty expensive, so try and buy those characters first that you will need to access all areas (a strong character, one who can dig, a Dark Wizard, a goblin...) and get the achievements (Animagi, Weasley family, Gryffindor Quidditch team...). Once you have unlocked the score multipliers, this gets considerably easier.
The single-player achievements are (in my humble opinion) a bit unfair if you prefer to play co-op (which is much more fun, anyway). Even if the second player is logged in, all progress achievements (completing story levels, buying characters, True Wizard bonus, etc.) are no longer given out to the second player as well. The only achievements you can get as the second player are the ones you actually, actively complete yourself (collecting Ghost studs, perform a certain action with a certain character, etc.).
5. Who of the following characters is not useful if you need to dig something up?

Answer: Hagrid

Dig spots are located throughout the levels and are marked by little blue paw symbols. Fang can dig, of course, and Crookshanks as well once he is released by Hermione (Crookshanks also replaces Scabbers as the crawl space helper of choice after Year 3). Professor McGonagall can change into a cat; Cat Hermione actually IS half a cat.
What with Fang being an extra character (unlike Crookshanks), he cannot be released by Hagrid, so Hagrid is not useful for digging. But he is strong and can pull chains without taking a potion first.
6. In some levels that take place at night (most notably, "The Restricted Section" in Year 1), Filch is snooping around, looking for students out of bed. If you are not invisible, it is possible that he may grab you. What do you (or your co-player) have to do to get rid of Filch if you get caught by him?

Answer: Shoot a spell at Mrs Norris

Once Filch has spotted you, he grabs you by the front of your robe and shakes you. You will then have to switch to the other character (if you play single) or have your co-player shoot a spell at Mrs Norris, which will alert Filch and he will release you to look after his cat.
7. Scaring other characters is a useful action on more than one occasion in the game.

Answer: True

Some characters hold character tokens in their hands and will drop them if you scare them. In Year 1, level 3 ("A Jinxed Broom"), Scabbers will scare a girl who will then make a platform collapse to clear your path. There is also an achievement for scaring twenty students using a ghost character.
8. Which of the following potions do you not brew as the story unfolds?

Answer: Veritaserum

During story mode, potion-making is sometimes necessary to access required areas. The Strengthening Potion enables you to pull chains; the Invisibility Potion is necessary to sneak past Filch or defeat red books if you are not Harry (who has the Invisibility Cloak).

The Exploding Potion is the very first one you brew, in Diagon Alley in the first level of year 1, to clear the way to Gringotts. Other potions include the Aging Potion (to cross Age Lines) and of course Polyjuice Potion, which is made in golden cauldrons. Since the Hogwarts hub is outside of the free mode levels, Polyjuice Potion is the only way to switch playable characters there. Cauldrons are scattered all over Hogwarts, and once you've learned to make the potion, they are all ready for use.
9. Who is the only character who can ride a broomstick well and use spells while doing it?

Answer: Harry

Very few characters can even fly properly (if Hermione mounts a broomstick, it will only hobble and barely take her from A to B), but Harry is the only one who can also use spells on a broomstick. This is important when you get near the end of Year 1 and chase the enchanted keys.
Some collectibles will only be reached on broomstick, either by soaring high or by performing some feats such as flying through a number of hoops.
10. Most of the red bricks contain the same extras as in earlier "Lego" games (detectors, score multipliers and such). Which of the following is a completely new, and extremely useful, addition (meaning it has no equivalent in the earlier Lego games)?

Answer: Fall Rescue

There is no detector for the Students in Peril, and a x50 multiplier does not exist, either. Fast Magic is the exact equivalent to Fast Build in the earlier games.
Fall Rescue, however, is new, and it is extremely helpful if you (like me) sometimes have difficulties walking in a straight line across a bridge or jumping over a precipice. It will prevent your character from plunging to his death but catch you and magically hoist you up to solid ground.
11. Do you ever play a Muggle character in story mode?

Answer: No

No, you don't. Muggle characters can be unlocked, though, and an achievement is awarded for defeating 10 enemies with one. Unlockable Muggle characters include the Dursleys, Mr and Mrs Mason, and a milkman who replaces Frank Bryce in the retelling of the prologue of Year 4.
12. You can buy several hexes and jinxes in Diagon Alley which are mainly just for fun. Some of them are familiar ones from the books, but others were specially created for this or another "Harry Potter" video game and the incantation is not mentioned in the "Harry Potter" books or movies. Which of the following is the only incantation that is also used in the books (i.e. a character is actually quoted as speaking it)?

Answer: Tarantallegra

In the "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets", Tarantallegra is used by Draco Malfoy during the dueling class with Lockhart.
Anteoculatia is used by one of the Weasley twins on Pansy Parkinson in book 5 (during their spectacular flight from Hogwarts). It causes the target to grow antlers. However, the incantation "Anteoculatia" is never heard, only the effect is described.
Entomorphis turns the target into an insectoid person for a short time (thank you, Harry Potter Wiki).
Glacius first appeared in the video game "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" but never in the books. It is a freezing charm and can put a person in a solid block of ice for some time. It is the only buyable spell in the Lego game which has an achievement attached to its usage. Also, Professors will cast the spell on students who irritate them during classes.
13. What do you need in order to smash glass?

Answer: Mandrake

Mandrake Handling is taught in Year 2 after the first level. You need to wear earmuffs in order to approach a Mandrake (dressers containing earmuffs are located somewhere near the Mandrakes), then you can carry it to a glass object and hold it close to it. The Mandrake's screams will smash the glass. After you've finished, find the pot for the Mandrake and put it in there to silence it. Characters who are not wearing earmuffs cannot go near a Mandrake.
Singing Mandrakes is one of the Red Brick extras. It is pretty cute but mainly a perk for you (the Mandrake screams are really piercing).
14. Which of the following locations does not appear in the game?

Answer: Hog's Head

The Hog's Head does not appear until year 5.
There are story mode levels that take place in the lake and at Gringotts, and the Owlery can be accessed from Hogwarts.
15. Who of the following characters does not have to be attacked/defeated at any point in the game?

Answer: Remus Lupin

The entire werewolf sequence with Remus is shown in a cut scene.
Moaning Myrtle must be gotten rid of in "Tom Riddle's Diary" (Year 2, level 4); Dobby must be chased around the Quidditch pitch and attacked during "Dobby's Plan" (Year 2, level 2), and Draco Malfoy engages you in a snowball fight in Year 3, level 2 ("Hogsmeade").
