Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these items IS needed to beat the game?

Answer: Boots

The Boots are needed to knock the Book of Madura off the shelf in the Library in Kakariko village. Link never needs to put anything in a bottle in "The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past" unlike in "Majora's Mask" when he must put someone in a bottle. Also the Boomerang, which is one of the most used items in the game, never needs to be used. Arrows or the Hookshot work in all instances.
2. What is the minimum number of heart containers with which the game can be beaten? NOTE: This is counting the total number of hearts in the upper right corner of the screen at the end of the game.

Answer: 13

Link starts with three and gets an additional three, one for each boss guarding a pennant. In the Dark World he gets another seven, one from each of the bosses guarding the seven maidens.
At the beginning of the game when Link and Zelda come into the sanctuary, there is a heart container there in a chest. He does not have to get it.
3. The Lantern is needed to beat the game.

Answer: True

If the Lantern is never obtained in the castle or in Link's house, Link can not get into the dungeon. Even with Zelda, Link can not push the block if he has no Lantern.
4. Which is the only medallion that is NOT needed to beat the game?

Answer: Bombos

Ether is needed to open up the sixth palace and Quake is needed to open up Turtle Rock. Although Bombos is the most powerful of the medallions, it is never needed. Also, Bombos melts the ice skeletons and destroys the ice cube surrounding the boss of the fifth palace.
5. The magic powder is needed to beat the game.

Answer: False

Although very useful, the magic powder is never needed in the entire game although it makes it much easier. The powder IS able to transform red anti-fairies, yellow anti-fairies, bees, and the lady sweeping her front porch into fairies.
6. Is the Ice Rod needed to beat the game?

Answer: Yes

The Ice rod is needed once in the whole game: When Link is fighting Trinexx (the three-headed monster at the end of Turtle Rock [he gets his name from the number of heads)]. The Ice Rod is used to stun the fire head and the Fire Rod is used to stun the ice head.
7. What is the only part in the game where Link can use nothing but the cape?

Answer: When Link walks through a bumper

Link uses the cape to get a Piece of Heart in the dark world in a cave near where he ascends into Death Mountain in the Light World. There is a sign that says, "I'll give a Piece of Heart to anyone who wears the cape". There is a bumper in the path through which Link must pass in order to get the Piece of Heart.
8. If "The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past" is beaten getting as little as possible, you get a special ending.

Answer: False

Sorry to disappoint you. As much as I wish there were, there is no special ending for the Super Nintendo version. There is a special ending for the Game Boy Advance version.
9. How many Big Chests can remain closed by the time Ganon is beaten? (Basically how many Big Chests does Link NOT need to open?)

Answer: 3

The Chest for Crystal 5 (Blue Mail), the Chest for Crystal 7 (Mirror Shield), and the Chest in Ganon's Palace (Red Mail) are not needed. As useful as the Blue and Red Mails are, they are not needed. Also the Mirror Shield is never needed. There is a spot where it blocks the beam of an eye on a wall guarding a key.

The Hookshot can be used to get to it. Edge forward shooting it in between moves. Link is invincible when it is extended.
10. In the Dark World where the village was, there is a chest in one of the buildings. In this chest Link can find the better version of something if he never got the original. If this is done, what is in the chest?

Answer: Red Boomerang

In both worlds, the building is in the lower left corner of the town (SW), just west of the general store (in the Light World). It is completely useless to get the Red Boomerang here because Link can easily have the Red Boomerang by the time he enters the Dark World (he can get it behind the waterfall just before the area where you go to buy the flippers).

The only purpose of this chest is to give random delight to anyone who beats the game without the Boomerang. Normally there is 300 rupees in the chest.
