Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. These first five questions are focused on the general gameplay of the games. Who is the champion of the Hoenn Region in "Pokémon Ruby" and "Sapphire"?

Answer: Steven

Your character first meets Steven Stone when delivering a letter to him from his dad. Though you meet Steven several times before the Champion battle, you never fight him before then.
2. Where are the Bicycle Stores located in the Kanto and Hoenn regions?

Answer: Cerulean City and Mauville City

In the Kanto games, you must first get the Bike Voucher from a man in Vermillion City, and take it to the Bike Shop in Cerulean. "Ruby", "Sapphire", and "Emerald" allows you to simply get a Bike by telling the owner you've come from far away. You get a choice of two bikes (Mach and Acro) in the Hoenn games.
3. The first gym leader in all five games is a rock-type trainer.

Answer: True

Roxanne has a Geodude (two in "Emerald") and a Nosepass in the Hoenn games. Brock trains a Geodude and an Onix in "FireRed" and "LeafGreen".
4. Which feature, introduced in "Pokémon Emerald", allows you to request another battle against a Gym Leader?

Answer: Match Call

A Match Call has the features of its predecessor, the Trainer's Eyes, which lets you get rematches from regular trainers. The Match Call also allows you to get a rematch against previously defeated Gym Leaders, which is a feature that's never been used in any previous game.
5. Which of the following is NOT changed at all from "Ruby" and "Sapphire" to "Emerald"?

Answer: Bicycles

An additional part of the Safari Zone is added in "Emerald" after the Elite Four, which is never available in "Ruby" or "Sapphire". The Champion, Steven, is replaced by Wallace, the previous eighth Gym Leader, who is replaced by Juan. The required order of Relicanth and Wailord are reversed in "Emerald", if you want to capture Regirock, Regice, and Registeel.

The available bikes are still the Mach Bike and the Acro Bike.
6. The following questions are based on and Pokémon training and evolution. At what level does Slowpoke evolve into Slowbro?

Answer: Level 37

Slowpoke's evolution can cause some confusion, because of its multiple evolutions and how it evolves in the anime. It evolves into Slowking through trade, while holding a King's Rock. Slowpoke becomes Slowbro at level 37, without the need of a Shellder. In fact, they aren't even found in the same game!
7. Without trading, how can you get an Umbreon in "Pokémon Sapphire"?

Answer: You can't get Umbreon in Pokémon Sapphire

Even though "Sapphire" has a day and night system, you cannot get an Umbreon without obtaining an Eevee first. Eevee is only available in the Kanto games.
8. Which of the following Pokémon does not need to be traded in order to evolve?

Answer: Sunkern

All of these Pokémon need to evolve. Seadra needs a Dragon Scale, Clamperl needs a DeepSeaTooth or DeepSeaScale, and Scyther needs a Metal Coat. These Pokémon also need to be traded. Sunkern only requires the use of a Sun Stone.
9. What is the only purpose of a Rare Candy?

Answer: Instantly levels up any Pokémon

A rare candy levels up a Pokémon no matter what its current level is. However it isn't advised especially if the Pokémon is already close to leveling, as the stats are not trained and will leave your Pokémon with lowest amount required for that level.
10. If you win your first battle against your rival, your Pokémon WILL level up, no matter what Generation III game you are playing.

Answer: False

Though this is true in "FireRed" and "LeafGreen", it's not necessarily true in the Hoenn games. Because your rival battle in the former games will be your first battle, there is no escape other than a loss. However, the Hoenn games allow you to train your starter on wild Pokémon to the point where your rival's Pokémon won't give enough experience for your Pokémon to level up.
11. The remaining questions will ask about special features/controls in the game. How do you set a Bicycle so you can access it with one button?

Answer: In the Key Items pocket, select the Bicycle, and press "Set"

The setting feature can be used for any key item, and allows use of the item by pressing the Select button. It does not work in a battle, even if the set item is a Poké Flute.
12. What does the Select Button NOT allow you to do?

Answer: Fly, if you have a Pokémon with the move in your party

The only way to fly is to select it from your Pokémon menu. You can use the Select button in Bill's or Lanette's PC to turn the cursor into a yellow-orange color. This allows you to withdraw, deposit, or move Pokémon in the respective PC. You can also use it to move items between boxed Pokémon in the "Move Items" PC in "FireRed" and "LeafGreen".
13. What can you use the "R" button for in the Mauville and Celadon Game Corners?

Answer: Select all three combinations

All three possible combinations are simultaneously selected with the "R" button. In the Kanto region games, you must go to the options and set the LR button setting to anything other than "Help". In those games, the Start button can be used to clear the coins after the main music is finished.
14. What does the combination of Select + Up + B do when pressed on the menu screen?

Answer: Delete your saved file.

Select + Up + B allows you to delete your game in "Pokémon LeafGreen", "FireRed", "Ruby", "Sapphire", and "Emerald". The Berry Program Update can be access in "FireRed" and "LeafGreen" by pressing Select and B.
15. What button combination allows you to restart your game without turning it off?

Answer: Start + Select + A + B

With this combination, you can quickly restart your game without turning the console off. This can be useful when you know you're about to lose or when a legendary Pokémon is about to faint. However, you cannot use this while you're saving the game.
