Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. #10: 'The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD' (Wii U) Where do the message bottles found floating in the Great Sea come from?

Answer: They are sent by other Miiverse players

One of the added features with the Wii U re-release of 'The Wind Waker' was message bottles littered across the Great Sea. Other players can write messages and take pictures using Pictoboxes and send them out into the Miiverse for other players to find.

Aside from updated graphics and tweaked controls more suited to the Wii U GamePad, 'The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD' plays out pretty much like its GameCube counterpart. Taking place after 'Ocarina of Time' in the "Adult Link" timeline, the land of Hyrule is flooded to protect it after the reawakening of Ganondorf.
2. #9: 'Tomb Raider' (PC, PS3, Xbox 360) Which British actress succeeded Keeley Hawes as the voice of Lara Croft in the 'Tomb Raider' reboot?

Answer: Camilla Luddington

Very much shredding Lara Croft back to basics and sticking her on a dangerous island, 'Tomb Raider' is developer Crystal Dynamic's reboot of the series. Introducing players to a very young Lara, the game focuses on her loneliness and vulnerability, where she tries desperately to survive against the odds.

After her ship crashes into the island, Lara finds herself tied up and suspended in mid-air in a cave, surrounded by cultist paraphernalia. When she escapes, she finds danger around every corner, be it wild animals, perilous cliffs and mountains, or the island's armed inhabitants. Weapons and other useful items are picked up throughout the game, and scrap metal can be used to upgrade these items further, giving Lara a slightly better chance against the island's dangers.
3. #8: 'Monaco' (PC, Xbox 360) Which composer, nominated for a Grammy Award for his composition for 'Journey', created the music for 'Monaco'?

Answer: Austin Wintory

'Monaco' is an indie video game all about stealing stuff. Played from a top-down perspective, players pick a character (each with their own strengths and weaknesses) and attempt to complete each level involving a heist of some sort. Their field of vision is limited by their line of sight, indicated by a cone that reveals whatever section of the area the player is looking at. Thus, a variety of other techniques is required to determine where guard patrols or security systems are. Up to four players can play cooperatively, both locally and online. Thanks to its integration with the Steam Workshop on PC, players can create their own maps and mods for the whole Steam community to enjoy, allowing for a huge variety of new, creative 'Monaco' experiences.

Awarded the Seamus McNally Grand Prize at the GDC Independent Games Festival in 2010, 'Monaco' features music from Grammy-nominated composer Austin Wintory. Always keen to meet new musical challenges, Wintory leapt into it with aplomb, creating a catchy, silent film-esque soundtrack befitting the manic heist action.
4. #7: 'Pokemon X' (3DS) The region of Kalos featured in 'Pokemon X' (and 'Pokemon Y') is modelled on which real-life country?

Answer: France

Kicking off the sixth generation of 'Pokemon' games and marking the shift from the DS to the 3DS, 'Pokemon X' and 'Pokemon Y' are set in the lush region of Kalos, a place with distinctive French influences, particularly in the cities. One obvious resemblance is the big Eiffel Tower-like structure in the centre of Lumiose City, which also serves as its gym.

Despite the shift to the 3DS, the 3D visual effect is limited to battles and certain Pokemon interactions, like evolution or mini-games.

As always, the three starter Pokemon are basic fire-, water- and grass-types. Chespin, the grass-type, evolves into Quilladin and Chesnaught, while Fennekin, the foxy fire-type, becomes Braixen and Delphox, and the water-type Froakie evolves into Frogadier and Greninja. Additionally, during the course of the game, players are given the option of selecting another starter Pokemon from the Generation I games: Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle. If that's not enough, series favourite Mewtwo returns as a legendary Pokemon.

Much of the later part of the game centres around Mega Evolution, with Pokemon able to "evolve" further into a more powerful version of themselves when holding a special Mega Evolution item (typically characterised by an -ite suffix, such as Blastoisinite and Lucarionite).
5. #6: 'Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time' (PS3) Which developer took over from Sucker Punch Productions and developed 'Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time'?

Answer: Sanzaru Games

After the contents of the Thievius Raccoonus mysteriously begin disappearing, Sly and company throw themselves through time, meeting Sly's ancestors and discovering who is responsible for the trouble affecting the Cooper clan.

With the original 'Sly Cooper' creators Sucker Punch Productions pursuing other projects, namely the 'inFamous' series, 'Sly' was graciously handed over to Sanzaru Games, who had previously handled 'The Sly Collection' (the original PS2 trilogy remastered for PS3) and the PS2 port of the PSP's 'Secret Agent Clank'. Thankfully, 'Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time' was in safe hands and it was praised upon its release.
6. #5: 'The Last of Us' (PS3) Which virus is the focus of 'The Last of Us' and causes the fungal/insect mutations in humans?

Answer: Cordyceps

The Cordyceps mutations turns people into insect-like creatures, with no recognition of their former selves. 'The Last of Us' begins with the initial spread of this virus, but the game truly begins some twenty years later. Tasked with escorting a girl called Ellie out of the city's quarantine zone, Joel and company encounter many dangers, not just from the mutants, as they make their way across America.

The heart of the game revolves around the human condition and surviving against the odds, rather than being a straight-forward "zombie"-type game. Driven by the story of Joel's past and his developing relationship with Ellie, Naughty Dog's 'The Last of Us' was heaped with praise on its release, not just for the story but also for how beautiful the game was, pushing the PS3 to its limits to create a lush, post-apocalyptic world where nature has begun to reclaim its land.
7. #4: 'Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag' (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U) The protagonist of 'Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag' is Edward Kenway. What relation is he to the protagonist of 'Assassin's Creed III', Ratonhnhaké:ton (aka Connor Kenway)?

Answer: Paternal grandfather

After the conclusion of Desmond Miles' story arc from 'Assassin's Creed' to 'Assassin's Creed III', 'Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag' features new Animus users through Abstergo Entertainment, the modern day Knights Templar. Following Edward Kenway (the father of Haytham Kenway and grandfather of the half-Mohawk, half-British Ratonhnhaké:ton), the game is primarily set in the Caribbean in an era when piracy was at its height. Notable piratical names featured in the game include Blackbeard and Charles Vane. Naval gameplay returns from 'Assassin's Creed III' and has a much greater focus in this game, as players are able to move seamlessly from land to sea exploration and back again.

Released first on PS3 and Xbox 360 and later on PC and Wii U, 'Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag' was also a launch title for the PS4 and Xbox One.
8. #3: 'Remember Me' (PC, PS3, Xbox 360) 'Remember Me' is set in a 2085 version of which European city?

Answer: Paris

'Remember Me' revolves around a new technology known as Sensen, which allows people to retain and replay their memories thanks to an implant on the back of their neck. Developed by the Memorize corporation, the Sensen is not without its opposition. Armed with a device capable of "remixing" (ie, changing) and extracting memories from Sensen implants, Nilin travels all over Neo-Paris to discover what truths have been hidden from the public as a result of this Sensen experimentation.

Remixing memories, as mentioned before, allows Nilin to change small details in someone's memory to produce a different outcome. Only one correct set of changes allows each remix to complete successfully, but there are some combinations which lead to a memory bug, where the events therein become somewhat paradoxical, like someone dying within their own memory.
9. #2: 'Ratchet & Clank: Nexus' (PS3) First appearing in 'Ratchet & Clank 2: Locked and Loaded', which organisation returns in 'Ratchet & Clank: Nexus', hired by the game's antagonist, Vendra Prog?

Answer: Thugs-4-Less

Variously described as Ratchet and Clank's swansong on the PlayStation 3, 'Ratchet & Clank: Nexus' (also known as 'Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus') acts as an epilogue to the 'Future' series, following 'Tools of Destruction', 'Quest for Booty' and 'A Crack in Time'. Despite its shorter length compared to previous entries ('Nexus' is significantly shorter than 'A Crack in Time' but longer than 'Quest for Booty'), the game pays homage to all the games that came before it, particularly during the Intergalactic Museum of History segment on Planet Igliak.

Given the task of transporting a criminal space witch called Vendra Prog to prison, Ratchet and Clank find their robotic allies Cronk and Zephyr killed at the hands of the witch and set out to track her and her twin brother Neftin down. Meanwhile, Vendra attempts to bring a race of creatures called the Nethers across from the Netherverse into this universe with catastrophic consequences. The game spans five planets and features the return of the Dimensionator, a device last seen properly in 'Tools of Destruction'.
10. #1: 'Rayman Legends' (PC, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U) Which of these songs is not given the 'Rayman' treatment in a musical/rhythmical level in 'Rayman Legends'?

Answer: 'I Will Survive' by Gloria Gaynor

According to the game's main composer, Christophe Héral, the studio would present him with a level and let him compose music accordingly. With the musical levels at the end of each gallery (the equivalent of "worlds"), Héral created the music first and then the studio developed the level around that.

'Eye of the Tiger' featured in the level Mariachi Madness, while 'Black Betty' accompanied Castle Rock, and 'Woo Hoo' turned into Gloo Gloo at the end of the 20,000 Lums Under the Sea gallery. Other musical levels were based on original music composed by Héral.

Originally lined up as an exclusive title for the Wii U launch, 'Rayman Legends', the sequel to the popular 'Rayman Origins', was delayed by several months, much to the annoyance of many Ubisoft Montpellier staff who were responsible for its development. The reason for the delay was to port the game to PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game was later released for the PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as well.
