NES Bases Loaded Baseball Trivia Quiz

One of my favorite games, but the less known, "NES Bases Loaded Baseball" is, I think, a classic that brings to vivid life the national pasttime.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The way the "NES Bases Loaded Baseball" is programmed, the computer opponent will choose their team based upon your choice of team. What team does the computer choose if you choose BOSTON?

Answer: Jersey

The computer player will also choose their starting pitcher based upon the skill of the pitcher you choose. Every team and pitcher you choose has a counterpart that will be chosen every time by the computer player.
2. Unlike modern day baseball, the new pitchers in the game enter the field in a unique way. By what method do new pitchers enter the field if they are substituted during the game?

Answer: They are driven by motorized cart.

Many years ago, this is how relief pitchers actually entered the field. "NES Bases Loaded Baseball" follows this same tradition and is accompanied by the same music each time.
3. On the BOSTON team, there is a player by the name of Freida. What happens if this player is hit by a pitch while batting and what is the result?

Answer: He attacks the pitcher and is ejected from the game.

Freida is the only player that charges the mound if he is hit by a pitch. He runs to the mound, beats up the pitcher and then is ejected, forcing you to replace him with someone else. It is possible to avoid being hit if you are playing as Freida if you swing at a would-be bean ball.

However, this will credit you with a strike since it is impossible to hit the ball when it is coming in at that trajectory.
4. If the game is allowed to stay on the opening screen for a period of time, a cut scene plays. What happens in the cut scene?

Answer: The batter hits a home run to center field.

This is the same cut scene every time. The player hits a home run to dead center field that strikes the score board, causing the "HOME RUN" announcement to flicker a little bit.
5. The player mentioned before, Freida, has the most home runs of any player in "NES Bases Loaded Baseball". How many homers does Freida have?

Answer: 60

Since the game does not update stats, every player always has the same stats each time you turn on the game. Perhaps Freida is given no more than 60 homers because, at the time the game was created, the home run record was at 61 home runs set by Roger Maris of the 1961 New York Yankees.
6. When a player hits a home run, once he crosses the plate he is often met by some players for high fives. How is the number of these players determined?

Answer: It is based on how many runners were on base.

The players he meets after he scores are all lined up offering high fives as the player runs by. They appear to almost be bowing to him as they celebrate.
7. Which is NOT the name of one of the umpires in the game?

Answer: Yum

The same umpires are the umpires for every single game that is played. They are listed on the left side of the screen that shows the two lineups before each batter steps up to the plate.
8. Players hardly ever commit defensive errors in the game. What is the ONLY situation in which a player makes, and is credited with, an error?

Answer: The third baseman receiving a throw from the outfield that bounces just before it gets to him.

Sometimes, things happen in the game that appear as though they should be errors. For example, it is possible to throw to a base with no player covering the base and the runners may advance as the ball is thrown away. However, this does not officially count as an error.

The only play that is considered an error is when the ball short-hops the 3rd baseman. When it does, it appears as though the 3rd baseman simply runs out of the way when the ball gets to him. The ball bounces past him, allowing the runners to advance.
9. TRUE or FALSE: In order to perform a bunt, the batter must get into the bunting position before the pitch is thrown.

Answer: True

This is not true, of course, of live major league baseball. However, in the game, you must be in the bunting position before the pitcher begins his pitching motion. Also, if you are in the bunting position when the pitcher begins his motion, you must remain in that position for the entire pitch. You cannot return to a noraml swing until the pitcher receives the ball back from the catcher.
10. TRUE or FALSE: It is not possible to perform a check swing.

Answer: False

If you simply tap the swing button slightly and quickly, the batter can perform less than a full swing. This can be done at any time during your at-bat.
