Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This run and gun game wasn't so hard when you used the famous "30 lives" Konami Code, but it was very difficult with only three lives. What is the name of this classic 1987 release?

Answer: Contra

"Contra" was a classic in the NES library. Nearly everyone that played the game knew about the 30 lives code, but the game was nearly impossible with only three lives. It was even harder if you invited a friend to play due to a moving screen that killed your player if it caught up to you on vertical stages.
2. You play as Arthur trying to save a princess from Satan himself. One hit and you were naked; two and you were dead. After conquering the final boss you find out that you have to play the entire game all over again. What is the name of this Capcom release?

Answer: Ghosts 'n Goblins

"Ghosts 'n Goblins" spawned a Super Nintendo sequel titled "Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts", which was essentially a remake. The game also required a complete second play through to officially win the game.
3. This shoot 'em up game was based around a comic book character. Choose a level and alternate between vertical and horizontal stages. What is the name of this brutal 1990 release, where touching anything on screen would kill you, including the floor or ceiling?

Answer: Silver Surfer

This game was released late into the NES lifespan. While it was praised for it's great music, it was poorly reviewed due to extreme and unfair difficulty.
4. This game spawned a huge number of sequels and spin-offs, but the original game by Capcom was considered brutally difficult. Choose a stage and fight a robot master at the end of each, and then finally go after Dr. Wily in what classic release?

Answer: Mega Man

The original "Mega Man" was considered extremely difficult due to brutal disappearing block jumping puzzles and end bosses. The fluent controls and great music was enough to spawn countless sequels in the main "Mega Man" and spin-off "Mega Man X" series.
5. Your heroes Rash and Zitz must fight to find their friend Pimple in this beat 'em up game. The game became nearly impossible when you invited a friend to play along, since you could damage each other with your attacks. What is the name of this game released by Rare in 1991?

Answer: Battletoads

This game was released late into the NES lifespan and had great graphics and sound, but many consider it a mistake to allow players to damage each other in the two-player mode. The "Battletoads" attempted to become an action figure franchise much like Ninja Turtles, but was unable to grab the attention of young audiences.
6. Capitalizing on the hugely popular cartoon franchise of the same name, this NES game by Ultra was notorious for it's fiendish "dam level" and maze-like overhead driving stages. What is the name of this totally bodacious game?

Answer: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The game was released in 1989 and is considered a classic icon of the NES, despite its difficulty. Sequels to "TMNT" moved more towards a beat 'em up style rather than platforming action.
7. You play as a Crocodile Dundee-esque hero in this game where you must fight alligators with your bare hands and dodge grenades in a jeep to try and rescue your girlfriend. What is the name of this game, which combined beat 'em up, driving, and shooting stages?

Answer: Adventures of Bayou Billy

Released by Konami in 1988, this game was played by nearly every NES owner and beaten by very few. It was still considered one of the toughest in the library.
8. This game had your hero entering a castle to fight hordes of zombies, medusa heads and hunchbacks with his trusty whip. Bosses included The Mummy and the Frankenstein Monster. What is the name of this game that borrowed from nearly every classic horror movie?

Answer: Castlevania

"Castlevania" was a classic NES game that was very difficult due to your player getting knocked back every time he was attacked. This often made the life bar obsolete, as you could easily die instantly from falling down a pit or into water. "Castlevania" spawned numerous sequels that are still being made today.
9. Your hero, Ryu Hayabusa, must fight through stage after stage using his lightning fast reflexes and katana blade to cut through enemies. Brutal enemy re-spawning made this game notoriously difficult. What is the name of this Tecmo release?

Answer: Ninja Gaiden

While some would consider the third game in the "Ninja Gaiden" series to be more difficult, the original was played by nearly everyone who owned a NES. Much like "Castlevania", your life bar was often useless because you would likely be knocked down a pit by one of the countless foes.
10. The true successor to an NES classic, this game was originally only released in Japan, but later released in the United States on a Super Nintendo compilation cartridge. What is the name of this mysterious sequel?

Answer: Super Mario Brothers: The Lost Levels

Instead of the real sequel to "Super Mario Brothers", in the US we got a version that was actually a Japanese game called "Doki Doki Panic". The characters were redesigned to be "Mario" characters and some other details were changed to make it a "Mario" game. Nintendo felt that the true sequel would be too difficult and not distinct enough from the original game, and they were probably right! Platforming skills were tested to the max in this one.
