"Contra" was a classic in the NES library. Nearly everyone that played the game knew about the 30 lives code, but the game was nearly impossible with only three lives. It was even harder if you invited a friend to play due to a moving screen that killed your player if it caught up to you on vertical stages.

Answer: Ghosts 'n Goblins

"Ghosts 'n Goblins" spawned a Super Nintendo sequel titled "Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts", which was essentially a remake. The game also required a complete second play through to officially win the game.

Answer: Silver Surfer

This game was released late into the NES lifespan. While it was praised for it's great music, it was poorly reviewed due to extreme and unfair difficulty.

Answer: Mega Man

The original "Mega Man" was considered extremely difficult due to brutal disappearing block jumping puzzles and end bosses. The fluent controls and great music was enough to spawn countless sequels in the main "Mega Man" and spin-off "Mega Man X" series.

While some would consider the third game in the "Ninja Gaiden" series to be more difficult, the original was played by nearly everyone who owned a NES. Much like "Castlevania", your life bar was often useless because you would likely be knocked down a pit by one of the countless foes.

Instead of the real sequel to "Super Mario Brothers", in the US we got a version that was actually a Japanese game called "Doki Doki Panic". The characters were redesigned to be "Mario" characters and some other details were changed to make it a "Mario" game. Nintendo felt that the true sequel would be too difficult and not distinct enough from the original game, and they were probably right! Platforming skills were tested to the max in this one.
