Only Connect "Zelda" Trivia Quiz

This quiz looks at connections between various aspects of "The Legend of Zelda". It is also my homage to the BBC quiz show "Only Connect" (though you don't need to have seen it to play). Good luck (and enlarge the photos if needed)!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. These four things have appeared in the series. What connects them?

Answer: Transportation

Each of these has been a primary mode of transport for the various incarnations of Link.

Loftwings appear in "Skyward Sword" and appear in the Sky, allowing Link to fly between Skyloft to the surrounding islands, as well as breaking through the Cloud Barrier to reach the surface of Hyrule.

The Spirit Train of "Spirit Tracks" gets Link around New Hyrule as he seeks to restore the Spirit Tracks and destroy the demon Malladus.

The King of Red Lions rescues Link from the Great Sea in "The Wind Waker" and becomes a valuable ally (in addition to helping him get across the expanse of ocean).

Epona appears most often throughout the series, as Link's trusty equine steed. Most often, she is summoned by playing her song (whether it's on the ocarina or on a piece of horse grass, for instance).
2. Here's four seemingly-unrelated things, but there is an item that connects them. What is it?

Answer: shield

Generally speaking, Link gets the Wooden Shield early in his adventure and is good for deflecting small projectiles. Unfortunately, it is susceptible to flames so won't last long in fiery environments or against fiery attacks.

As its name suggests, the Mirror Shield is useful in reflecting and aiming light, something which is particularly useful (and necessary) in completing the Spirit Temple in "Ocarina of Time".

The Goddess Shield, the final upgrade to the Sacred Shield in "Skyward Sword", is one of the best in the game, with the ability to repair itself over time (at the cost of being less durable than other shields).

The Hylian Shield, when it appears, is also amongst the best of its type, resistant to most attacks that other, lesser shields wouldn't be able to handle for very long.
3. These four dungeons are all connected in some way. What's the link?

Answer: They're water-themed dungeons

Water dungeons in "The Legend of Zelda" are perhaps wrongly met with cries of exasperation and despair (at least since the Water Temple in "Ocarina of Time").

In "Breath of the Wild", the mechanical dungeon that is Divine Beast Vah Ruta is themed around water, protected by Waterblight Ganon.

"A Link to the Past" has the Swamp Palace as its token water dungeon and is found in the Dark World, guarded by Arrghus. The Hookshot is found here and plays a vital role in solving the dungeon's puzzles.

The Ancient Cistern in "Skyward Sword" is located near Lake Floria. Koloktos awaits Link at the end of this watery dungeon, with his newly-acquired Whip coming in handy as Link defeats it.

The Great Bay Temple of "Majora's Mask" is guarded by the fierce masked fish Gyorg. In order to get here, Link needs to play the New Wave Bossa Nova and get a giant turtle to take him to the dungeon's entrance.
4. What's the connection between these four characters?

Answer: They're four of the Seven Sages in "Ocarina of Time"

Six of the Seven Sages are imprisoned thanks to Ganondorf's rise to power, and Link's job is to free them so that they can help seal him away once again. Nabooru is found after completing the Spirit Temple, Darunia awakens at the end of the Fire Temple, Impa returns to the Temple of Light when Link has banished Bongo Bongo from the Shadow Temple, and Saria is rescued after completion of the Forest Temple and a tense game of Dead Man's Volley with Phantom Ganon.
5. These three games form the start of a sequence. Think carefully about their release. Which of these would come fourth in the sequence?

Answer: "The Wind Waker"

Each of these was the first "Zelda" game on its respective home console, going forward in time.

"The Legend of Zelda", quite obviously the first in the series, was released in Japan on the Famicom in 1986 and on the NES in other regions the following year.

"A Link to the Past" was the first SNES game in the series, released in 1991 in Japan and 1992 elsewhere.

"Ocarina of Time", often hailed as one of the greatest games of all time, marked the series' transition into 3D on the Nintendo 64 in 1998.

"The Wind Waker" was the first "Zelda" game on the GameCube (2002 in Japan and 2003 everywhere else). "Twilight Princess" was the first game on the Wii (though it was also released on the GameCube around the same time). Similarly, "Breath of the Wild" launched on the Switch (as a launch title) and Wii U. "Skyward Sword" is the odd one out in this bunch of games as it was not the first "Zelda" game on its console, the Wii.
6. Here's another sequence of "Zelda" things. Which of these is an acceptable example of something that could come fourth in the sequence?

Answer: Witches at the end of the Spirit Temple

We're counting downwards from 5 in this sequence. There are five Fabulous Froggish Tenors in Zora's Domain in "Ocarina of Time". There are four Giants of Termina, each needing to be freed at the end of their respective dungeons. The three Goddesses of Hyrule (Din, Nayru, and Farore) have been omnipresent in one form or another for most of the series.

To complete this sequence, we're looking for something which is an example of 2 of something. There is only 1 male Gerudo born every one hundred years (of which Ganondorf was one). There are 6 Lokomo Songs to learn in New Hyrule in "Spirit Tracks". The Sky Keep in "Skyward Sword" has 8 distinct rooms. Therefore, the answer must be the witches of the Spirit Temple - Koume and Kotake, the sorceresses that also make up the dungeon's boss, Twinrova.
7. Think about what these numbers might represent. What comes fourth?

Answer: 50 in purple

We're looking at rupee values in this sequence! While the colours and values have differed over the years, the vast majority of "Zelda" games have green rupees worth 1 each, blue rupees worth 5, red rupees worth 20 and purple rupees worth 50. "The Wind Waker" and "Twilight Princess" had yellow rupees worth 10, and the two "Oracle" games bucked the trend further by having red worth 5 and blue worth 10.

Silver rupees have varied in value between games, from 5 to 200 but generally tend to sit at 100. Gold rupees started at 200 in the Nintendo 64 games and went up to 300 with "Phantom Hourglass" and subsequent games. Black rupees are also called rupoors, which deduct rupees from your wallet. Unlucky indeed!
8. Quite simply, what is the fourth word in this sequence?

Answer: dangerous

Perhaps the most famous phrase associated with the series (aside from possibly "Hyah!" or "Hey, listen!") is uttered in the very first game. A kindly old man, in a cave just north of Link's starting position in Hyrule, offers a wooden sword with the sage advice: "It's dangerous to go alone! Take this."
9. I've taken out the vowels from a phrase and re-spaced the remaining consonants. It's up to you to work out which vowels go where to complete the phrase. What is the solution to this vowel-less phrase, which features two "Twilight Princess" dungeons that have been merged together (ie, the last word of the first is the first word of the second)?

Answer: Lakebed Temple of Time

The Lakebed Temple, aptly named due to its position in Lake Hylia, is accessible only when Link has both the Zora armour and the Iron Boots.

The Temple of Time is found deep within the Lost Woods, its entrance concealed within its own ruins (you see, you go back in time to when the Temple of Time was still intact).
10. Here's two "A Link to the Past" dungeons merged together. What is the resulting phrase?

Answer: Eastern Palace of Darkness

In "A Link to the Past", the Eastern Palace conceals the Pendant of Courage, one of three Pendants of Virtue named for the parts of the Triforce. The Bow comes in handy here, particularly against the final bosses, six Armos Knights.

The Palace of Darkness is first up after Link enters the Dark World and is guarded by the Helmasaur King. As with other dungeons and their key items, the Magic Hammer plays a central role in getting to and defeating the final boss. Coincidentally, the Palace of Darkness is in the same place as the Eastern Palace would be in the Light World.
