Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the earliest things Mario can do in "Paper Mario" is find Goombaria's lost doll, Dolly. Is the player required to give the doll back to her in order to beat the game?

Answer: No

The player does not have to return the doll if he feels like a jerk, but he will miss out on a Star Piece and a smooch from Goombaria. Plus, there is nothing to gain by not giving it to her; it can't be sold to anybody or anything of that nature. In "Paper Mario's" predecessor, "Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars", both Gaz (the Toad owner of the Geno from Rose Town) and Booster own dolls that resemble Princess Toadstool as well.
2. What does Goombario say if Mario uses Tattle on Luigi?

Answer: "He's Luigi. I don't have to say anything about him, do I? He's your brother!"

Even though Luigi does not help Mario on his adventure in "Paper Mario", his role in this game is far less pathetic than Mario's previous RPG (Do you remember: "I wanna be a great plumber like my brother Mario."?) His excuse for not tagging along early in the game seems to be that he has to stay and watch after the house (umm... yeah...). Later, he seems to find some courage and asks Mario if he can tag along. Mario declines his brother's offer. Koopa Koot is a gigantic Luigi fan.

He calls him "Air Luigi!" and send Mario off down the pipe near the Toad Town entrance to ask him for his autograph.

After obtaining the Super Boots, Luigi's Diary can be accessed from the weak floor panel in the Bro's. house.
3. Where in the game is Mario most likely to find hidden invisible Blocks?

Answer: Near the bell-plants using Watt's ability

Watt is a most inscrutable character. A member of the Lil' Sparky species, many fans believe Watt to be male, and many believe Watt to be female. The Super Block upgrade refers to Watt as male. Most everywhere else in the game where sex is mentioned refers to Watt as female. That blue thing is not Watt's nose, rather a pacifier. Watt's sex is comparable to the controversy over Vivian of "Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door"'s sex.
4. What is the only chapter in "Paper Mario" to contain Whomps?

Answer: There are no Whomps in "Paper Mario".

There are no Whomps in "Paper Mario". And you know what else? There aren't any in "Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door", either. And you'll never guess what else: You won't find a trace of them in "Super Paper Mario" either (although his buddy Thwomp is in the latter two games of the series).
5. Which of the following items cannot be found in Peach's room?

Answer: A golden hairbrush

The photo of Mario in Peach's room cannot be made out by the player. In many chapters, Peach takes the secret exit to leave her room. She must press the big red button behind the picture to exit through the rather large, warm fireplace. At one point, Twink worries if it is still safe to use the secret exit, saying: "Do you think it's still safe to use that secret path? Don't you think Bowser's figured it out by now?". Peach answers, "It's still all right, Twink. Bowser still hasn't noticed anything.

He looks scary, but he's basically a major bonehead. Let's get out of here. C'mon!"
6. If Princess Peach bakes a bad enough cake for Gourmet Guy, will he accuse her of trying to poison him?

Answer: Yes

"Oh! I've been waiting so long! I've wasted away to nothing! Thank you! Noooooo! Haaaaackpth! Aw, disgusting! This is awful! Where'd you learn to cook, Truck Driving school? Go back to the kitchen and follow a recipe or something! What ingredients did you use in that monstrosity? Whatever they were, I think they were seriously wrong!" And then, if you talk to him once more before leaving the room, he'll say, "I'll never eat such a nasty creation again, I tell you! I swear... trying to poison me..." He won't just say that if you mess up to where it's just a little below his picky standards. You have to bake the WORST, most foul possible cake, using the worst possible ingredients (to include detergent).
7. Near Tayce T.'s house, just north of the way to Forever Forest, a small, young Toad with big, fickle aspirations hangs out. He is always talking about what he wants to be when he grows up. Which of the following is NOT one of them?

Answer: A pirate

A young Toad in Toad Town keeps changing his mind about what he wants to be when he grows up (as younglings often do). One famous example: "Now I've decided to become a ship captain. Because trains have to stay on the tracks, y'know. You can go anywhere on the sea! Ahoy! Full steam ahead!" His new decisions seem to coincide with the mission Mario must go on next (For example, when Mario needs to take the K64 to Mt. Rugged, he wants to be an engineer.) Goombario's Tattle on the little Toad goes: "He always talks about what he wants to be when he grows up.

He's constantly changing his goals. I guess that's natural. It's good to have a dream to chase, don't you think? I have a couple dreams. I'm living one of 'em right now! Who'd have thought I'd actually have an adventure with Mario?!" The final dream the Toad has in the game goes as follows: "Oh, hi, Mario. Y'know, I thought I wanted to be a lot of different things when I grow up.

But I decided that I'm just gonna be myself.

Although maybe I'll imitate you a little, if that's OK..."
8. Why did Fice T. take the job as guard of Forever Forest?

Answer: Because he has always been easily scared, and always wanted to become brave

"Ever since I was a child, I've been easily frightened. My wish, above all else, is to become a brave Toad. That's why I took this job as guard of Forever Forest. I must not be afraid! Only by facing our greatest fears can we grow courage." That's good advice, but his guarding of the haunted forest did not make him all the more braver. About ten years ago, "Nintendo Power" magazine asked in its "Write Away Right Away" column for readers to mail them a letter about what they deemed to be the scariest moment in a video game. Someone mailed them a letter saying that the scene where Bootler got really huge and jump-scared the gamers was the scariest moment in gaming. And that person was...

Not me. But in that very same issue (the October 2001 issue), I got my name in the magazine for saying the spookiest moment in gaming was when Tooty from Banjo-Kazooie stepped out of Grunty's machine an ugly beast during the Game Over segments.
9. Which one of the Traveling Sisters Three (a/k/a the Three Beautiful Sisters) does Goombario consider the cutest?

Answer: Felissa T.

If you Tattle Felissa T., Goombario will say: "She is the youngest of these three Toad sisters. Apparently they call themselves the "Three Beautiful Sisters." She says she's cute. I definitely think she's the cutest of the three." The Traveling Sisters Three later reappear in "Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door", and even get turned into pigs in Twilight Town!
10. Which of the following is FALSE about the blue Candy Canes of Pleasant Path?

Answer: Running around any one of them in a circle will cause them to eject Hearts

Russ T. tells Mario if he does something for the Candy Canes of Pleasant Path, they will do something for him in return. This turns out to be completely true, as running around one (and only one) particular one will get him all the HP he needs. The Candy Canes appear years later in "Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door" in Petal Meadows, this time dispersing a Horsetail.
11. Two young Toads, madly in love with each other, hang out near the Toad Town Entrance. Why would we have reason to believe this romance will not last until the end of the world?

Answer: Shortly before his adventure with Mario began, the male Toad told Goombario he liked a different girl

Goombario's Tattle for the male Toad reads: "This Toad claims that he and his girl are in love. But just the other day, he told me he liked a different girl! What a cad!" For the girl, his Tattle reads: "Those Toads are in love. They're so in love, they don't even notice what's going on. Unless you like seeing public displays of affection, I wouldn't talk to them.

They're shameless." I always thought they seemed so young to be so serious with one another. Perhaps the male Toad did tell Goombario he liked another girl. Goombario did not specify if he thought this meant he liked another girl as well, or exclusively liked this other girl.

It is too bad if he was leading her on. Usually, it is the other way around, with the girl teasing. Sometimes I wonder if they are still together today.

The last thing the two lovebirds say to Mario in the game is: "I heard that you are going to defeat Bowser so our fair land will once again find peace. Please succeed, Mario! So we two Toads can stay together forever."
12. There is a con artist from "Paper Mario" located in the Toad Town Tunnels. Is his name Rip Cheato or Chet Rippo?

Answer: Rip Cheato

Chet Rippo appears in both "Paper Mario" and "Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door". He looks totally different in the sequel. Even though he is anything but a con artist in the sequel, his character design is infinitely better in the original. Rip Cheato is located in the Toad Town Tunnels. Mario will need to pay him 192 Coins in order to get the Bump Attack Badge.

This Badge will defeat enemies that have become too weak to grant Mario any Star Points. This is imperative when going back to previously conquered areas with the I Spy Badge equipped to look for missed Star Pieces.

There is no risk of being forced into time-consuming battles with weak foes. You must pay him a total of 640 Coins to get all three of his Star Pieces. I do not believe anyone can say they have beaten the game if they do not find all the Badges and Star Pieces.

This advice should help. First, let us start with the Star Pieces: Make sure you give 640 Coins to Chet Rippo. There's three here. Do all of Koopa Koot's favors.

There's 15 here. Play all of Chuck Quizmo's quizzes. There's 64 here. And then, equip the Bump Attack and I Spy Badges and go back to places you have already been to, looking for mainly hidden chambers. After this, if you are still missing Star Pieces, go pay Merluvlee to tell you where one is. If you don't have many Coins, then save your game, buy all the locations you can, write them down, and hit reset. Then go get the Star Pieces. You'll have all the information you need and still have your Coins. Then, when you go back to her, she will not retell you locations to the Star Pieces you have already collected. As for the Badges, buy up all of Rowf's inventory. Then, do the same trick with Merluvlee.
13. Whaaack-hoo! How many whacks does it take to finish off Whacka for good?

Answer: Eight

These poor, cute, harmless moles contain one of the greatest items of them all: The Whacka Bump. They can be smashed, blown up, beaten, and abused for their bumps. In "Super Paper Mario", Bowser can even roast them! When I played through "Paper Mario" for the first time a decade ago, I remember I wasted a good Whacka Bump to heal myself before facing that Monstar. I was low on health, and I thought that thing was going to be tough! Darn those Star Kids! Anyway, after eight hits in all "Paper Mario" games, Whacka is done for.

He will scream that he just cannot take the horrible abuse anymore and then will vanish into the ground, defeated. These poor creatures are endangered, and undeservedly so, for none of them have ever harmed a living creature in their lives. All they ever want for mankind is to spread joy and love.

The gentle, benevolent creatures are repaid treacherously.
14. After Mario gets the Fuzzipede out of the Whale, he tells him he feels so much better, and that people should call him what?

Answer: Doctor Mario

The Fuzzipede is the only enemy in the game after getting Goombario that can't be Tattled. The reason for this is because Mario must have Watt with him to see inside the Whale. I always try to use Tattle on every new enemy I encounter, so I never really had a need for the Peekaboo Badge in the 20+ times I've beaten this game.

In fact, I've beaten the game so many times since I was twelve that I have had to erase files many times over to get room to start over (Except for my first record, of course. That I will never erase.).

The Fuzzipede belonged to the loveable Fishmael of the Toad Town Port, who absolutely needs to appear in another game. Professor Kolorado profusely refers to the Whale as a tuna. No matter how many times the Whale tells him what he is, Kolorado cannot get the fact through his thick skull.

The whole reason the Whale needs to take Mario and his friends to Lavalava Island is because there aren't any ships that sail there from Toad Town. A Toad of the Great Gossip Trio says swimming to Lavalava Island (which initially seemed to be the only option) is impossible, and that if anyone did it, he'd eat a Fuzzy.

However, Jr. Troopa shortly after does just that! But not without suffering a great loss of HP, however. The idiot forgot he had wings and could have flown. Before Mario and his friends departure, the Whale warns him that the volcano on the island is on the verge of eruption, and warns Mario not to go. However, Kolorado, with his elephantine ego, simply must obtain the ancient treasure in the volcanic cave. There is a Whale from "Donkey Kong Country Returns" who bears a resemblance to the Whale from "Paper Mario". If you have not played it yet, go buy it immediately. It is the greatest "Donkey Kong" game ever made, bar none! I wonder how many gamers besides myself have beaten Mirror Mode... Once again, those imbeciles at "Nintendo Power" did not give the game the perfect ten it deserved. In fact, they only gave it an 8.5! Do they seriously want to help or hurt Nintendo? It's one thing to be what they consider to be "honest", but to give it a score lower than the average score given by reviewers is just plain sick. I wish they would fire every member of that staff and have them all blacklisted. "Donkey Kong Country Returns" is infinitely better than "New Super Mario Bros. Wii". The fact that is challenges even lifetime, hardcore gamers such as myself while at the same time being a blast to play is so enriching! If there is one thing I despise about the game (along with "New Super Mario Bros. Wii" and "Super Mario Galaxy 2"), it is the Super Guide. If I ever meet Shigeru Miyamoto , I will get down on my hands and knees and beg him never to have it put in any future video game ever again. It is the most atrocious "innovation" ever put in any video game. "Nintendo Power" even did not give "Paper Mario" the score it deserved. Back then, the maximum score was 5 Stars. They gave it 4 1/2 Stars. It would have gotten it had not one reviewer failed to give it a perfect score because some of the side-quests were "tedious". I wonder if there is anything between their ears. The side-quests are OPTIONAL! And they add more content for people who don't just want to rush through the main story. Not to mention, they are fun, interesting, and unforgettable.
15. What is the last favor Koopa Koot asks of Mario?

Answer: To defeat that cad, the evil King Bowser, once and for all

Obtaining a Red Jar from the shop in Dry Dry Outpost is the last chore Mario can do specifically for Koopa Koot. And for the final time, he will actually fork over a wonderful reward. The last thing he says to Mario in the game, as well as the last favor, is: "You're a good soul for helping this old Koopa so many times. Now Mario! I have one last favor to ask! That cad, Bowser... You must defeat that evil King Bowser once and for all." In spite of being a Koopa himself, he knows that the dear children of the village will never sleep in peace with the tyrant Bowser in power. "Paper Mario" goes to show that not all Goombas and Koopas are on the wrong side.
