Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Low-level Pokemon can usually only learn moves that won't do much damage -- Bulbasaur and Squirtle are proof. What low-damaging move do both come with when you receive either one of them at the start of the game?

Answer: Tackle

Tackle is one of the weakest attack moves, which gets overtaken later on in the game by stronger ones -- Stomp, for example. Most low-level wild Pokemon such as Rattata and Pidgey also have moves that don't do a lot of damage.
2. Swift is a Normal-type move that has a big advantage over a lot of the other moves. What is that advantage?

Answer: It always hits the opponent

Swift will always hit, even if the opponent has used Dig or Fly (which otherwise makes it invulnerable for a turn). Not too many Pokemon learn it, however.
3. Moves such as Stomp and Bite sometimes cause the opponent to "flinch" in addition to doing damage. What happens when an opponent "flinches"?

Answer: It loses its turn

Flinching means the opponent cannot use its planned move, as long as the attacker has hit first. Bone Club is another example of this type of move.
4. You might think all of the following moves are Flying-type moves, but one of them isn't -- it's a Normal-type move. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Gust

A low damage-dealing move, Gust was changed to a Flying-type move in the "Gold/Silver/Crystal" games. Only Flying-type Pokemon learn it.
5. Strength is a powerful Normal-type move which a lot of Pokemon can learn. It also comes in handy as a Hidden Machine (HM). Which of these is NOT an advantage of an HM?

Answer: You can obtain more than one of the same HM in the game

Hidden Machines contain moves that Pokemon don't learn naturally, and will help you move through the game. For example: Strength moves rocks aside, and Surf lets you move across water.
6. Guillotine, Horn Drill and Fissure are moves that will instantly knock out the opponent. However, they share one major disadvantage. What is it?

Answer: They only hit 30% of the time

Another disadvantage is that most Pokemon won't learn them naturally. Horn Drill and Fissure can be taught using as TM's.
7. Self-Destruct and Explosion are the most powerful moves in the game. There's one drawback to them. What is it?

Answer: The user faints

These moves are so powerful they almost always knock out the opponent, and they have 100% accuracy. Unfortunately, it only works once.
8. Some attacks can poison the opponent, causing them to lose a little bit of health after every turn. Which of these moves can't poison the opponent?

Answer: Acid

Acid is the only Poison-type attack that can't cause poison. If the move Toxic is used, the opponent will be "badly poisoned" and will lose more health each turn that the one before it.
9. Many attacks are capable of causing "Critical Hits". What is so special about Critical Hits?

Answer: They cause 50% more damage than usual

Critical hits are one of the keys to winning battles, as is getting them at critical times. They will cause much more damage than normal. Slash is a move that will often get one.
10. Body Slam is another powerful attack that has 100% accuracy, and can be learned by many Pokemon through a TM. What added effect does the move sometimes have on the opponent?

Answer: Causes paralysis on the opponent

This is one of the most powerful attacks in the game, since two of these will usually knock out an opponent. Very few attacks are guaranteed to cause more damage in two turns than Body Slam.
11. No physical attack will cause the opponent to fall asleep.

Answer: True

If you want to put an opponent to sleep, you have to use a status move as opposed to an attack move. Sing and Hypnosis will have this effect.
12. The moves Dig and Fly, while being different in most regards, have similar effects in battle. Which of these is a similarity between the two moves in battle?

Answer: They both take two turns

Dig does slightly more damage and is more accurate than Fly. Neither can cause flinching.
13. There is a bunch of fighting-type moves out there. Which is the most powerful?

Answer: Hi Jump Kick

Hi Jump Kick barely wins out over Dizzy Punch while the other two are far less powerful. However, it deals damage back on the user if it misses.
14. Some moves hit the opponent more than one time in a turn. Which of these moves is NOT one of those?

Answer: Wrap

All of these moves (and many more) involve multiple attacks, but there is one difference: Wrap attacks over several turns, while Fury Swipes, Fury Attack and Barrage all attack multiple times in the same turn. Many Pokemon can learn one or more of these moves.
15. Earthquake is a Ground-type attack that deals major damage. Being a Ground-type move makes it all-powerful against several types of Pokemon. Which of these types are Ground-type moves NOT effective against?

Answer: Flying

Ground-type moves can't hit birds. They are also somewhat ineffective on Grass- and Bug-type Pokemon and strong against Poison-types.
