Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Red" and "Blue" versions (NOT "Yellow"), which of the following Pokemon is only available through an in-game trade?

Answer: Farfetch'd

There is only one Farfetch'd obtainable in Red and Blue. The player must trade a Spearow to a character in Vermilion City to get it. In Yellow, Farfetch'd can be found on Routes 12 and 13.
2. Which of the following Pokemon is unobtainable outside of the Safari Zone in ALL Generation I games?

Answer: Exeggcute

Scyther can be purchased at the Rocket Game Corner (in "Red" and "Yellow" but not in "Blue"). Chansey can be found in Cerulean Cave in all versions, while Rhyhorn, though unobtainable outside of the Safari Zone in "Red" and "Blue", can also be found in Cerulean Cave in "Yellow".
3. Which of the following Pokemon owned by a Kanto Gym Leader in "Red" and "Blue" could not possibly deal any damage to a Pokemon of a certain elemental type?

Answer: Lt. Surge's Raichu

In "Red" and "Blue", Lt. Surge's Raichu knows Thundershock, Thunderbolt, Thunder Wave and Growl. Therefore, the only thing it could possibly do to a Ground-type Pokemon (even a low-level Diglett caught in Diglett's Cave!) is lower its Attack stat. This was remedied in "Yellow" with the addition of Mega Punch and Mega Kick to Raichu's moveset.

There are a few Pokemon owned by Gym Leaders that only know damaging moves of the Normal type (and therefore could not damage Ghost-type Pokemon), but none of them are listed here.
4. In Generation I, the success of which move was based on the Speed stat of both the user and the target?

Answer: Guillotine

In Generation I, the success of one-hit knockout (OHKO) moves was dependent on the Speed stat: if the user's Speed was lower than the target, the move would fail regardless. From Generation II onward, the level of both Pokemon became the deciding factor (if the user is of a lower level than the target, the move will fail regardless).
5. Which of the following moves did NOT receive a type-change after Generation I?

Answer: Curse

Curse was a ???-type move until Generation V, wherein it was changed to a Ghost-type move (due to the elimination of the ???-type altogether).

Gust, Karate Chop and Sand-Attack were all Normal-type moves in Generation I that were changed to Flying, Fighting and Ground-type moves respectively from Generation II onward. Bite is the only other move to receive a type change between Generations I and II, changing from Normal-type to Dark-type.
6. Which of the following Routes in the Kanto region consists of trainers who own Pokemon of ONLY ONE type combination in the Generation I games?

Answer: Route 18

Route 18 has three Bird Keepers, two of them owning Spearow and Fearow and the other owning a Dodrio. All of these Pokemon are of the Normal-Flying type combination.
7. What is the most powerful Bug-type move (by base power) in the Generation I games?

Answer: Twineedle

In fact, these are the only four Bug-type moves in Generation I! Twineedle comes in at a whopping (or not) 25 power. This is one of the main reasons that the Dark and Steel types were created in Generation II; there had to be something to balance the Psychic type out. Having only one elemental weakness to a type with only three damaging moves of 14, 20 and 25 power (although two of them hit multiple times) created a major type imbalance in the Generation I games.
8. Which of the Kanto Elite Four of Generation I uses five Pokemon that share a common weakness to one elemental type?

Answer: Agatha

All five of Agatha's Pokemon are part Poison-type, and share a weakness to Psychic-type moves. Interestingly, Agatha is considered a Ghost-type Pokemon trainer, but one must remember that there were only three Ghost-types in Generation I (the Gastly family, who are all part Poison-type as well).

Lorelei owns four Pokemon weak to Electric-type moves, while Lance owns four Pokemon weak to Ice-type moves.
9. What movie is most likely referenced by the TV program being broadcast in the player's house in the Generation I games?

Answer: Stand By Me

The TV shows four boys walking along railroad tracks. It is commonly assumed that this is a reference to "Stand By Me", which itself is based on Stephen King's book "The Body".
10. Which NPC (non-player character) in the Generation I games had their dialogue changed from the original Japanese release to the international releases due to fear of content being unsuitable for younger audiences?

Answer: Old Man

In the original Japanese "Red" and "Green", the Old Man is in fact passed out drunk across the pathway. Obviously, this was changed for the international releases to him not having had his coffee for the day.
