Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jinmenju are trees that grow human faces. The faces are constantly laughing, and fall off if they laugh too hard. This is very much akin to which Pokemon?

Answer: Exeggutor

Jinmenju are mysterious trees that grow laughing faces. Exeggutor is a coconut tree with three faces, which on occasion fall off and become Exeggcute. Much like a jinmenju, an Exeggutor's heads are independent of, but amicable towards, each other. Exeggutor is a grass/psychic type, as might be expected of a Pokemon based on a supernatural tree.

Much like a tree, Exeggutor is large and not very fast, but it has strong offensive capabilities.
2. Kitsune are wise, long-lived foxes that possess supernatural powers. They can breathe fire, create illusions, and grow extra tails as they age. How many "tales" do the most powerful kitsune possess?

Answer: Nine

Kitsune start with one tail, but grow more as they become older and more powerful. The oldest kitsune grow nine tails, at which point their fur turns white and they become all-seeing and all-knowing. Ninetales is a white fox-like Pokemon with (what else?) nine tails and white fur.

It is a fire-type and primarily uses fire attacks. The illusory nature of a kitsune can be seen in the fact that Ninetales uses psychic and ghost attacks, which include confounding moves like Spite, Grudge, Confuse Ray, and Hypnosis.
3. Mawile was based on a Futakuchi-onna, a woman with a very unusual feature. Both possess an extra of what extra body part, that also contributes to the name 'Mawile'?

Answer: mouth

A Futakuchi-onna ("two-mouthed woman") is a woman with a second mouth on the back of her head, often the result of a curse or accident. Mawile has a large mouth -- a maw -- on the back of its head, that chomps down on things with great force. It often enters battle backwards or sideways, using its extra mouth to intimidate foes. Starting with the sixth generation, Mawile is able to mega-evolve into Mega Mawile, which has two mouths on the back of its head, and one of the highest attack stats possible out of all Pokemon.
4. One of the starter Pokemon of the Kalos region, Greninja is based on Jiraiya, a ninja with the ability to shapeshift into what?

Answer: toad

"The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya" is a story written in the nineteenth century about Jiraiya, who (among other things) could transform into a toad. The association of ninja with toads made its way to Pokemon in the form of Greninja, an anthropomorphic toad with a ninja appearance.

As might be expected of a ninja toad, Greninja is a water/dark type, and extremely fast. It is also capable of learning Mat Block and Water Shuriken, two moves modeled on ninja skills.
5. Legend has it that carp which manage to leap up the Dragon Gate -- a waterfall on the Yellow River -- will turn into dragons. It's quite an accomplishment, and an explanation for what Pokemon evolution?

Answer: Magikarp to Gyarados

Asian carp can leap great distances when startled. They gather around the Dragon Gate every spring, and legend has it that those that could make it up the waterfall would become dragons. Magikarp are notoriously weak, and often do little but splash around.

But a Magikarp that perseveres and becomes strong enough evolves into Gyarados, a violent, brutal Pokemon with strong stats. Gyarados is a water/flying type and draconic in appearance, but it also bears similarities to koinobori, wind socks that are traditionally flown during Children's Day.
6. Much like Castform, Teru Teru Bozu are small, white charm dolls. Also much like Castform, they are often used to influence what battle-related factor?

Answer: weather

Teru Teru Bozu are small charms that are supposed to bring good weather. Castform is a small white ball of a Pokemon whose existence mainly revolves around influencing weather. It can create sunny, rainy, icy, or sandstorm weather, and learns elemental attacks that do well in such conditions. Castform changes its type and form if the weather is sunny, rainy, or icy.

It was also the first (and originally, only) Pokemon that learned Weather Ball, a move whose type and power change based on the weather conditions of a battle.
7. Tengu are dark, supernatural beings with long noses. They live in forests and stir up violent winds with their fans. A Pokemon also fits this description very well -- which one?

Answer: Shiftry

Tengu are commonly thought of as malicious spirits that live in deep forests. Shiftry bears great resemblance to a Tengu, possessing a long nose, wind fans, and geta (Japanese sandals). It lives in deep forests, can create violent winds with its fans, and is generally feared and avoided by people. Imitative of its habitat and nature, Shiftry is a grass/dark type.

Its nature is also reflected in its move set, as Shiftry can learn moves like Beat Up, Foul Play, Nasty Plot, Razor Wind, and Whirlwind.
8. Raikou is a legendary Pokemon that is partially based on a smilodon. However, it is primarily based on on the demon Raijuu, which explains its tiger-like appearance and its type, which is what?

Answer: electric

Raijuu is a thunder demon that takes on the form of a cat or wolf, and Raikou is nothing if not a thunder cat. Much like a raijuu, Raikou is agile and fast, and sweeps across the land in a haphazard motion. Trying to battle and catch a Raikou is very difficult, as it will roam about the Pokemon overworld in random places, and immediately attempt to flee even if encountered.

It can also create rainy weather, and mainly uses electric attacks.
9. The Japanese once believed that earthquakes were caused by Namazu, a giant catfish the lived under Japan and occasionally got loose. 'Namazun' is the Japanese name of what Pokemon?

Answer: Whiscash

Japanese mythology explains the earthquakes around Japan as being caused by Namazu. Namazu is guarded by Kashima, but occasionally gets loose and causes earthquakes. Whiscash is a catfish Pokemon based on water and ground types. It can use moves reminiscent of Namazu, namely Earthquake, Fissure, and Thrash. Though there is no scientific evidence for it, catfish are sometimes associated with predicting earthquakes. Whiscash has some future insight too, as it is able to use the move Future Sight, and can have the ability Anticipation, which warns it if an opponent has dangerous moves.
10. The uber-legendary Ho-oh has much in common with the fenghuang: fire, good fortune, rebirth, regality. Both are similar in appearance to what legendary creature?

Answer: phoenix

Firebirds are fairly common in world mythology, and Ho-oh is based on the fenghuang, the Chinese equivalent of the phoenix. Ho-oh can create sunny weather and uses fire attacks, such as Sacred Flame, in battle. In the Pokemon mythos, it resurrected three nameless Pokemon that perished in the blaze at Brass Tower, turning them into Raikou, Entei, and Suicune. Ho-oh also has abilities like Regenerator and moves like Recover, which allow it to regain its hit points while in battle.

It also holds the item Sacred Ash, which can fully restore all the player's Pokemon team to full strength outside of battle.
