Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "A duck comes bearing green onions" is a Japanese saying that could invoke a stroke of surprise luck or which Pokemon?

Answer: Farfetch'd

Much like a hen brooding viper eggs, a duck bearing green onions originally referred to somebody nurturing an unpleasant fate. It eventually took on a different perspective and brought to mind the person coming across such a duck -- an event that would be quite fortuitous but admittedly... farfetched. Farfetch'd is a very straightforward interpretation of the saying, as it is a duck that carries around a green onion (or alternately, a stick).

The stick is used like a sword to attack foes, and is in fact an in-game item that increases its critical hit ratio.
2. Chandelure is partially based on hitodama. What is hitodama?

Answer: ghost fire

Hitodama are spectral balls of fire that tend to appear at night. They are supposed to be human souls separated from their bodies. Chandelure is a large, powerful chandelier that evolves from Lampent (a lamp), which evolves from Litwick (a candle). Chandelure is a ghost/fire type that has strong special attack power.

It burns with a strong purple (or in rare cases, orange) flame and is said to burn the soul, rather than the body, of a foe. Either way, it's not a good thing.
3. Froslass is based on the Yuki-onna, which is why a Froslass is a ghost/ice type that is always what?

Answer: female

Yuki-onna ("snow woman") is a fairly popular spirit in Japanese culture. Appearance wise, she is tall, thin, wears a kimono, and does not leave footprints behind when she walks. If a person got trapped in a snowstorm, she would be the reason they froze to death. Froslass is an ice/ghost type that appears to wear a kimono and has no footprint.

She can have the ability Snow Cloak, which makes it much harder to hit her when hail is active on the battlefield. Froslass evolves from Snorunt (itself a small snow spirit), but only if it is female.
4. Which flaming pokemon could claim to have been made in the image of simian legends Hanuman, Vanara, and Sun Wukong?

Answer: Infernape

Infernape, Hanuman, Vanara, and Sun Wukong are all monkey people in one form or another. Hanuman is a Hindu monkey god and in fact just one of a race of monkey people known as Vanara. Sun Wukong is also known as the Monkey King and is the main character in the Chinese story "Journey To the West".

Infernape is a fire/fighting Pokemon with its head on fire. All of them are built to emphasize strength, speed, and agility. Like a monkey, Infernape is relatively short; it is also said to be an expert in martial arts.
5. People can be Pokemon too. What did comedian Sanpei Hayashiya often do that Wobbuffet is regularly illustrated as doing?

Answer: hold his hand to his forehead

Sanpei Hayashiya was a Japanese rakugo comedian. It's a style of comedy that involves a single person sitting and explaining a complicated story. Sanpei Hayashiya was known for haplessly putting his hand to his head and explaining "Sou nansu, okusan!" ("That's the way it is, ma'am"!). Sounansu is the Japanese name for Wobbuffet, which is something of a punch line in many ways.

It is shaped like a punching bag and holds its hand to its head. It cannot inflict damage except by countering damage that it takes.

Despite this, it is extremely aggravating and difficult to beat, as an opponent cannot flee from it.
6. Sougen Bi is a decapitated monk's head forever on fire and flying and a sight that looks awfully what?

Answer: Gastly

Sougen was an impious monk who would do things like steal temple money and swindle oil. He eventually died and was punished for his transgressions. His decapitated head roams the Earth and is always surrounded by fire, thus becoming Sougen Bi ("Sougen's Fire"). Gastly was one of the first ghost Pokemon designed, and appears to be a head without a body.

It is wreathed in flames as well, though they are purple and thus more spectral. Gastly is of course a ghost, but is also a poison type. This may be an oblique reference to Sougen's toxic behavior.
7. Drowzee is stated as being a descendant of the legendary spirit Baku, and is well-associated with which of these psychic moves?

Answer: Dream Eater

While many Pokemon are based off of Eastern legends, Drowzee is explicitly stated as being a descendant of Baku. Baku is a supernatural tapir-like spirit that eats dreams and nightmares, and is usually a force of good. Drowzee is a bipedal Pokemon with a tapir-like face.

It is a psychic type that along with its evolution Hypno is known for hypnotizing Pokemon and then using Dream Eater to damage them and regain energy. That move combination, though it sounds ideal, rarely works well due to the relatively low accuracy of Hypnosis and the ease of switching out Pokemon under most circumstances.
8. What catty psychic Pokemon comes in two distinct forms, much like a Nekomata?

Answer: Meowstic

Nekomata start out as domestic cats, but gain unusual powers and undergo transformations. They start walking like people, talking like people, and their tails split in two. The two major types of Nekomata are those that live in cities and those that live in the countryside. Meowstic is a blue-and-white bipedal cat Pokemon that has two tails and posses psychic powers.

Its two distinct forms are based on its gender. Relative to each other, their colors are inverted, and there are minor differences in the shape of their ears and tails.
9. The fiendish, draconic Yamata no Orochi lost a few of its heads when it was adapted as which fiendish, draconic Pokemon?

Answer: Hydreigon

Fiendish multi-headed serpents are popular classic villains, and Japanese references to Yamata no Orochi date back over 1,300 years ago. This particular dragon was known for having eight heads and eight tails, red eyes, and being incredibly large. The storm god Susano-o killed it after it drank distilled sake. Hydreigon is a dark dragon classified as the "brutal Pokemon." It only has three heads, perhaps because eight would have been confusing.

It is said to be extremely destructive and destroys anything that gets in its way.

The English name is partially based on another serpent, the Hydra.
10. As with the annual Tanabata festival, strips of paper hang on Jirachi's hat that supposedly can be used to make it do what?

Answer: grant wishes

Jirachi is an adorable little legendary Pokemon with a large hat and an extra eye on its abdomen. The three tags that hang from its hat can grant wishes if one was to write one there. It is normally awake for only seven days per millennium, and very difficult to obtain in the games. Tanabata is the Star Festival that is held on the seventh day of the seventh month of the year. During the festival, girls and boys write wishes down on strips of paper and hung on bamboo. Jirachi is able to use moves like Wish, Healing Wish, Future Sight, and Doom Desire.
