Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which if the following is something "Police Quest 4" has in common with the original "Police Quest 2?"

Answer: No manual driving

The second and fourth games are the only ones where you don't actually have to drive the character wherever he needs to go. You just tell the game where you want to go and he will drive there.

"Police Quest 2" uses EGA graphics and has no voice acting. Mark Seibert did not play a role in "Police Quest 4".
2. What does the game ask you to do on day 4 of "Police Quest 4" that you also have to do twice in "Police Quest 2"?

Answer: Go to a shooting range

In "Police Quest 4", you are expected to go to a shooting range to practice shooting just like in "Police Quest 2". In both games, the protagonist's shooting scores were low the previous month and he needs to bring them up. Actually, you don't have to go to the shooting range in "Police Quest 4" at all. This is just an optional mini-game that you can do for additional points. It may feel necessary because the game appears to say that it is necessary, and "Police Quest" veterans know that it was necessary in "Police Quest 2". But, despite all that, it is not necessary to go to the shooting range in "Police Quest 4".

The shooting ranges are very different in each game. In the second game, you fire your gun, and then you use a screwdriver to adjust your gun until it's perfect. In the fourth game, targets pop up and you fire your gun to try and hit the target as many times as possible. In addition, this section of "Police Quest 4" has music and there is an armorer who runs the session, things that were absent in the Lytton shooting range. Lastly, you cannot die in the "Police Quest 4" shooting range nor can you be stuck later on in the game by not doing this. You get points for doing this, but this game doesn't tell you what the maximum score is, which reduces the importance of scoring points. In the "Police Quest 2" shooting range, there are 2 ways to die in the shooting range and two places in the game where you will be killed if you did not go to the shooting range earlier in the day

The shooting range is far easier in "Police Quest 4", and you can breathe easier knowing can't get stuck in a dead end by forgetting to do the shooting range in "Police Quest 4". However, that's kind of a double-edged sword because for just this reason, the "Police Quest 2" shooting range feels far more useful. Just knowing that this will help you later is important. Also, while the fact that the shooting range in "Police Quest 4" has music and the one in the second game doesn't would normally make me give the edge to the one in the 4th game, I don't like the music for this part of "Police Quest 4". Lastly, just about all the voice acting this game is based on stereotypes and this is no exception. The game takes place in Los Angeles, but the armorer clearly has a Texas accent, implying that the LAPD had to hire an armorer from Texas because of the stereotype that people from Texas are the biggest experts in the world on guns. Add it all up and I'd probably say I prefer the "Police Quest 2" shooting range.
3. Who is the first stripper Carey meets?

Answer: Electra

Rene Garcia's car is found near a strip club. Also, Carey had found a red slipper near Garcia's body and LaSondra Washington had said that she saw a girl in a red dress in the alley where Hickman was murdered. All of this evidence leads Carey to believe that the killer was probably a stripper, so he goes into the strip club to question the strippers.

The first stripper he meets matches LaSondra's description: a pretty girl in a red dress. He questions her and shows her the red slipper. She admits that there a plenty of cops who come to the strip club, that the strippers all date the customers despite the club's policy against it, and that all the stripper's have been invited to Yo Money's house.

However, she does not admit to knowing anything about Garcia or the slipper.

She tells Carey to come back later when the manager of the club is there.
4. Who is the second stripper you meet, darling?

Answer: Barbie

The game is designed so that if Carey has gone to the music store, then as soon as he leaves the strip club and comes back, Electra will be gone and Barbie will be there. Carey questions her and then shows her the shoe. Barbie says that the shoe is too big even for her, let alone any of her employees (she is the biggest woman at the strip club).
5. What happens at the end of day 4?

Answer: Carey rescues Sherry from the media

Once again, John Carey shows his lack of respect for the media. He goes to the morgue and sees the receptionist, Sherry, talking with a reporter. Sherry answers a few questions, then Carey intervenes and tells the reporter that she has nothing else to say to her. At the beginning of day 5 Carey scolds Sherry for talking with the media. Sherry apologizes.

In real life I would not condone John Carey's handling of the media. Perhaps Daryl Gates wants you to learn that part of being a cop is doing whatever you have to do to avoid the media or save others from the media, whether you like it or not. One thing's for sure, Jim Walls would never make you do anything like this.

I don't know of any other adventure game that unintentionally makes me dislike the protagonist the way "Police Quest 4" does at times.
6. What's the name of the victim who was found at the park?

Answer: Luella Parker

This victim was not a cop. This means that the killer wasn't just a cop-killer as was previously thought. Everyone was at risk of being killed by the killer.
7. Where did the park victim work?

Answer: Social Servies

Luella was a social worker. Interestingly, although the receptionist at Social Services says they hadn't seen her in a few days and they don't know what happened to her, they aren't too worried. They just assumed she'd been doing a lot of work out in the field as she often does. Carey does not tell them that she is dead.
8. What two people had the victim at the park been working with?

Answer: Barbie and Mitchell Thurman

Carey finds the case files of Barbie and Mitchell Thurman in Luella's office. He also finds a Yo Money cassette, but Yo Money wasn't seeing Luella. The cassette serves as nothing more than an excuse to go to the music store. You show the cassette to the store owner, he tells you he doesn't know who bought it but he offers Carey a drumstick which he needs later in the game.

This is when the game starts to make very little sense.
9. Who is the main killer?

Answer: Mitchell Thurman

The main serial killer in this game is Mitchell Thurman, the owner of a small movie theater. According to the receptionist at social services, Mitchell Thurman had a horrible childhood. He saw his own mother being murdered and his father was abusive. The receptionist implies that he never recovered from this trauma and turned out "wierd" as a result. This is the closest the game comes to explaining Mitchell's motives for killing people.

People come into his theater. He offers them a drugged beverage. They fall asleep in his movie theater and have a very strange dream. In their sleep, he would inject some kind of poison into the victim's arm. Then he tortures them by gluing some part of the victim's body shut, burning parts of the body with a cigarette, and severing a part of a body. He would do all of this while dressed up as a woman. Then he would dump the body somewhere.

The strip club turns out to be a complete red herring. It is likely that Daryl Gates intentionally designed it so that the path would lead to a strip club just for some entertainment to the players. At the strip club, you can see a stripper dancing in the background (Carey doesn't question this stripper, she's just there to entertain the player).

Raymond Jones is a killer in the game. He killed Bobby Washington. However, he did not kill anyone else so he is not the main killer.
10. What drugged beverage does the killer offer to John Carey?

Answer: Tea

After Carey asks Mitchell several questions about Luella, Mitchell offers him some free tea to shut him up. One would think a good cop, already suspicious of Mitchell being the murderer, would be even more suspicious when Mitchell offers him tea he did not ask for, saying it was to calm Carey's nerves even though Carey was not the nervous one. However, for some inexplicable reason, you have to make Carey drink the tea. Once he does so, he has the very same strange dream that every other victim of Mitchell has (he dreams that he sees a man dressed up as a woman). Luckily for Carey, for some reason Mitchell does not kill him like he kills everybody else who falls asleep at the theater. He just wakes him up and tells him to leave.

The "Police Quest" games in general do a good job of not putting you in unwinnable situations. However, for the second straight game, "Police Quest" has come up with at least one illogical dead end. If you do not go to social services before going to the movie theater, Mitchell will still invite you into his theater. However, once you're in his theater, the game does not allow you to leave until you drink the drugged tea and have the dream, and Mitchell won't offer the tea until after you've questioned him about Luella. If you don't go to social services first and find Mitchell's file on Luella's desk, Carey won't think to ask Mitchell about Luella. Therefore the game won't allow you to ask Mitchell about Luella, which means it will never allow you to leave the theater. So you'll be inexplicably stuck.
11. How do you get the dog help you get into the killer's house on day 6?

Answer: Tie a rope to it

As I said before, the game becomes increasingly illogical as it goes on. On day 5, after Carey asked Mitchell about Luella, he says that it is terrible what happened to her. This is quite suspicious. How does he know what happened to her? Nobody else that knew her even knew that she was dead. Mitchell is forced to mention his dog, making it sound like maybe his dog did it. Carey believes that to be a possibility, so he goes to the park. Since the park is the only place Carey had seen a dog, he assumed that dog must be the killer's dog. So he ties a rope that he found in South Central L.A. to the dog, who runs off and drags Carey to Mitchell's house. Amazingly it turns out Mitchell did have a dog, and it was that dog at the park. How Daryl Gates thought of this is beyond me, much less how he thought the players would think of this.
12. How does Carey protect himself from being killed by the killer's dog when he enters the kitchen?

Answer: He attaches a drumstick/mirror to the kitchen door

When John Carey goes upstairs from the basement to the kitchen door, he must attach a makeshift mirror to the door so he can spot any potential threats. The mirror is formed from one of his car mirrors that was knocked off his car by a vandal while he was at the strip club and a drumstick he bought at the music store.

He glues those two items together and attaches them to the kitchen door. If the player does not do this, then as soon as he opens the door, Carey will be mauled to death by the dog. If the player does this, the dog will not be there. Apparently the dog is afraid of drumstick/mirrors.

Another puzzle that makes very little sense.
13. What does Carey find in the refrigerator?

Answer: A severed head

Mitchell likes cutting off people's body parts and keeping them as souvenirs of the kill. This severed head doesn't actually belong to any of the victims Carey previously knew about.
14. When Carey runs into the dog after leaving the kitchen, what does he need to do to get past the dog?

Answer: Feed him Hickman's drugs

This dog is very strange. Carey sees him several times during the game. Most of the time the dog is harmless, but if he sees him on just one occasion in the game, the dog will kill him. That would be when you enter the kitchen without attaching the drumstick/mirror to the drawer. Once you leave the kitchen, the dog will be there.

But it will not kill Carey. However, for some reason Carey can't just step around it or over it. The game forces you to give the dog the drugs that you got from Hickman's house. Technically, the "Police Quest" puzzles are supposed to be based on what you'd do if you were a cop in real life. I sure hope in real life, cops don't have to use drugs prescribed to a human to sedate and get past a mid-sized dog who isn't threatening you at the moment.
15. What does Carey use to defeat the killer?

Answer: A lighter and a can of hairspray

Prior to the end of the game, Mitchell had punched Carey and knocked him out and taken all of his stuff. So he has to look around the house and see what items in the house he can use to make a makeshift weapon to stop the killer. He finds a can of hairspray in the bathroom and he finds a lighter in the severed head.

He uses those two items to create a makeshift torch. Then, he enters the room where Mitchell is torturing and trying to kill someone at the moment. Mitchell sees Carey and prepares to attack him. If the player acts correctly in time, Carey will torch Mitchell and kill him. If Carey doesn't act correctly in time, Mitchell will kill him.
