Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kind of game is "Pump It Up"?

Answer: Dancing game

"Pump It Up" is a dancing game similar to "Dance Dance Revolution". It originates in Korea and a max of two people can play at the same time. This game requires you to hit steps with your foot while listening to a song. For most songs, the steps usually go with the beat of the song, while some go with the vocals of the artist.
2. How many different steps or arrows are there that can be hit? Note: This includes both pads if played with two people.

Answer: Ten

Unlike "Dance Dance Revolution", with four, or "In The Groove", which has eight arrows total, "Pump It Up" has ten. The set-up is like "Dance Dance Revolution", but instead of the arrows being configurated up-down-left-right, the arrows are turned 45 degrees to be on the corners and an extra arrow is placed in the middle, allowing, in my opinion, better movement and flow while stepping on them.

I believe there are no stepping games that have seven total arrows. However, "Technomotion," another dancing game, does have eighteen steps, one for each section of the square!
3. How many different colors are used to light the arrows when stepped on?

Answer: Three

Three colors red (or orange), yellow, and blue, are used for lighting up the arrows while you are playing the game. Red is used for the top left and right arrows; yellow, the center button; and blue, the bottom left and right arrows. "Dance Dance Revolution" has two different colors: pink and blue, and I just made the other two up.
4. What arrows must you use to scroll and choose through the song selection on every single version of the game?

Answer: Bottom left and right arrows

The center step for this game selects the song after choosing it, but it didn't have a function on the very old versions. The top left and right arrows have had many different functions throughout the years. On the old versions, they actually started the song, selecting them two at a time. Later on, they had no function, only to be put in use for codes.

Then, they were used to select the level of difficulty on the songs, and now, they are used to select through certain music channels in the game.

The separate selection buttons are used for "Dance Dance Revolution", not "Pump It Up".
5. On the newest versions of "Pump It Up," in Arcade Station, there are five modes of difficulty for most of the songs: Normal, Hard, Crazy, Freestyle, and Nightmare. How many of these modes are playable for a 2-player game?

Answer: Three

Only Normal, Hard, and Crazy can be played by two people. Freestyle and Nightmare modes are modes for one player only, but they take up both the 1-P and 2-P sides for more difficulty.

On a side note, before, with a 2-player game, the players had to play the same mode, but thankfully, in the newest version of the game, they are now able to play different difficulties at the same time. For example, they can set a beginner on Normal Mode while an expert plays Crazy Mode at the same time.
6. In 2006, a version of "Pump It Up" called "Pump It Up: Zero" was released in arcades. This version changed the look and gameplay by adding many new modes, channels, and stations. Which of these stations did the company add to make the game more fun for everyone?

Answer: Easy Station

In this newest version, they created a station for the people who are just getting started and have no idea how to play. They tried to do this in the past with the Normal mode, but the steps were still too hard for someone with no foot-eye coordination, hehe.

These steps are completely easy and have difficulty ratings that range from 1 to 3. Mission Station is also a new feature, where they made the steps with certain modifiers (one is where the steps disappear right before the bar on where you're supposed to hit it). Remix Station and Arcade Station were "introduced" in the previous version, "Exceed 2", and Battle Station was taken out in the new game.
7. Because the game was made in Korea, the majority of the songs are by Korean artists. Many of these artists have more than one song included in the newest versions, but one 'band' has nearly made up 1/3 of the song lists in most versions of "Pump It Up". Which of these is it?

Answer: Banya

Led by Yahpp, this band now even has a channel dedicated to itself in the newer versions of the game. They are mostly famous for their techno and classical remixes, but they also have some songs with lyrics in them. By far, this band has the most original music in the game. All the rest of these artists are in one of the versions of the game, but have had only five songs or less featured.
8. In the some versions of the game, a new format was created, and it included what are known as 'channels'. They split the song selection into these channels to make selection easier and faster for the player. Which three channels have existed in all of the versions ("Exceed 1 & 2" and "Zero") that they have been in?

Answer: Banya, K-pop, and Pop

The channel Banya includes all of the Banya songs in the game (go figure). The K-pop lists all the Korean artists and songs featured in it. Pop includes many American songs, like "Rapper's Delight" by Sugarhill Gang and "Conga" by Gloria Estefan, along with many Latin and Mexican songs ("La Cubanita", "Fiesta", etc.) and even one Chinese song ("Up Up").

Another channel was included in "Pump It Up: Zero" only and that was a rendition of all the songs with extra, much more harder steps. The World channel is nonexistent.
9. Who is the company that has made most of the "Pump It Up" games?

Answer: Andamiro

These guys have been the backbone of this game, and, in my opinion, they have made this game great for anyone who is interested in playing it. F2 Systems was the only other company to make a game ("Pump It Up: Extra"). Konami is for "Dance Dance Revolution" and I just threw Activision in there for fun.
10. Now for a question for obsessed fans! On the song selection screen in the Arcade Station in "Pump It Up: Zero," What song is placed directly to the right of the song it starts on when you select the station?

Answer: "Beat of the War 2"

"Love is a Danger Zone 2" is the actual opening song, "Phantom" is to the right of "Beat of the War 2". Depending on whether "Witch Doctor" is unlocked in the game or not, either that or "Papa Gonzales" is to the immediate LEFT of the song. I hope you guys enjoyed my quiz on the wonderful game of "Pump It Up"! :)
