Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is a popular racing series?

Answer: Gran Turismo

"Gran Turismo" is a racing video game series. The first in the series was released in 1997 for the PlayStation. In 2010, the fifth was released for the PlayStation3. The name 'Gran Turismo' is Italian for 'grand touring'.
2. In this racing game, you can play as a toad, a princess, a plumber, a dinosaur, and many others. You can trip people with banana peels or throw turtle shells at them. Which of these is it?

Answer: Mario Kart

The first "Mario Kart" game was released in 1992 for the Super Nintendo. It was called "Super Mario Kart". It featured eight characters to play: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Koopa Troopa, Bowser, Donkey Kong Jr., Toad, and Yoshi. The spin-off game was so successful that an entire series spawned from it, and in 2011, the seventh installment was released.
3. Rare created a racing game that introduced many new characters that would later receive their own video game series. For instance, Conker the squirrel was a playable character in the racing game. Which game?

Answer: Diddy Kong Racing

"Diddy Kong Racing" was released in 1997 for the Nintendo 64. Plans for a sequel, "Diddy Kong Pilot", were changed when Rare was bought by Microsoft. Since Rare no longer had the rights to use "Donkey Kong" characters, it was changed to "Banjo-Pilot" (2005). "Donkey Kong Racing" was cancelled and never released.
4. "Nitro Kart" is a racing video game created as a part of which series?

Answer: Crash Bandicoot

"Crash Nitro Kart" was released in 2003 for the PlayStation2, Xbox, and Gamecube, among others. This wasn't the only racing game to be made based on the Crash Bandicoot series, however; "Crash Tag Team Racing" was released in 2005.
5. "Burnout" is a popular series of racing games. Which of these, however, was the subtitle of the third game in the series?

Answer: Takedown

The first in the series, "Burnout", was released in 2001 for the Playstation2, Xbox, and Gamecube. The second was "Burnout 2: Point of Impact" (2002), and in 2004, the third was released "Burnout 3: (Takedown"). 2005 saw the release of both "Burnout Revenge" and "Burnout Legends", "Burnout Dominator" was released in 2007, "Burnout Paradise" in 2008, and "Burnout Crash!" was released in 2011.
6. Some racing games do not use four wheels. Which of these is a racing game that uses only two-wheeled vehicles?

Answer: Motocross Madness

"Motocross Madness" is a 1998 computer racing game. Instead of cars, however, they use motorcycles. In 2000, a sequel, "Motocross Madness 2", was released.

"Monster Jam" involves monster trucks, and the other two involve cars; so only "Motocross Madness" uses two-wheeled vehicles.
7. The "Need for Speed" series has many games. Which of these is not one of the titles of "Need for Speed", released prior to 2010?

Answer: Feel the Need

The "Need for Speed" series includes dozens of titles, the first of which being released in 1994. Of the options in the question, "Hot Pursuit" was released in 1998 (there's also a 2010 game with the same title), "Underground" was released in 2003, and "Shift" was released in 2008, the 13th installment in the "Need for Speed" series.
8. Which of these is an off-road four-wheeling video game?

Answer: Pure

"Pure" was released in 2008 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation3, and Windows. It is a racing game; but instead of simply racing your ATVs, you also try to land tricks.
9. A popular 1987 arcade game was called "Top Speed". What, though, is another name it was commonly known as?

Answer: Full Throttle

"Full Throttle" was a popular arcade game released in 1987. A blazing fast, bright red Mazda RX7 drove through the US countryside, which made it very similar to "Out Run". Actually, "Full Throttle" was made specifically to compete with "Out Run".
10. "Super Off Road" was an arcade game (and later became a home-console game) that featured trucks. On the SNES version of the game, it was obvious which truck brand was used for the races. Which one was it?

Answer: Toyota

"Super Off Road" was first released in 1989 as an arcade game, but was popular enough to be moved to at-home consoles in 1990. In 1991, it was released for the NES, and later was released for several more consoles, including the SNES. On the SNES version, the trucks were Toyota models, and the Toyota logo was prominently used in the game.

Colors of the trucks were red, blue, yellow, and gray.
