Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are those? Run, whatever they are! In the first level of the "Halo" campaign, the human ship is attacked by alien species known as what?

Answer: The Covenant

In "Halo", the Covenant is the first enemy you meet. They storm the Pillars of Autumn, the UNSC spaceship you are on. Their own weapons are generally quite effective against them, but pistol works quite well, too. The most powerful Covenant enemies are Hunters and Elites, so killing them may require quite a bit of running, dodging, and sneakiness. Grunts and Jackals can be hand attacked to death rather easily, but can still put up quite a fight. The Covenant is a group of aliens bonded by a common religion.

They worshipped the makers of the Halo, the Forerunners, and believed that activating the Halo Rings would cause them to all ascend to heaven and become gods. The Covenant Empire is a caste system ruled by San 'Shyuum, or Prophets. Elites rank near the top of the system, too.
2. Run for your lives, little Grunts! I am coming! Grunts, the little creatures you first see when you exit the Bridge, have a different name in the Covenant language. What is it?

Answer: Unggoy

Unggoys' name in Latin is "cold monk", if translated into English.
Humans call Unggoy "Grunts" because they are comparatively weak, and do all the difficult labor within the Covenant caste. Grunts are far more likely to flee from you. Their motto is "If in doubt, flee." They are easily cowed, and killing a higher ranking Covenant alien will send them running away with their arms waving in the air. Grunts speak English, and you can hear them say, "This way! Oh no! Here, there're more! Not me! Whoa! Run!"
Grunts are bipeds that breathe methane instead of oxygen. They have methane tanks strapped to their backs, which is the "hump" that protrudes above their heads. Within the Covenant caste system, Grunts are at the bottom, and essentially act as slaves. Unggoy carry Plasma Pistols or Needlers, and wear red or orange armor. It is possible to easily kill them simply by hand attacking, especially if they are asleep.
3. Run! Here come the shield bearers! In "Halo", the creatures carrying shields on their arms, which are first seen in the second level "Halo", are called what by the humans?

Answer: Jackals

Jackals, Covenant creatures, do not appear until the second level, "Halo". They always sport a shield in one hand and a plasma pistol in the other. Jackals' shields make simply firing and killing them more difficult. Sniping at uncovered parts or using hand attack should kill them quite quickly. Generally used as scouts or spies, Jackals are less easily cowed than Grunts, and one plasma bolt from them may take away your shield.
Kig-yar, known as Jackals to the humans, are a bipedal, bird-like group of creatures that are part of the Covenant. They are mercenaries, serving the Covenant for reward instead of the religion. Within the cast system, Kig-yar are slightly superior to Unggoy (Grunts), but below all other Covenant species.
"Hateful bandit" is the English version of "Kig-yar". Being small and fast and used as spies, the name does fit.
4. Run! It's them! The Sangheili, Covenant soldiers whom you see in nearly every level of "Halo", are some of the hardest to kill enemies you will meet. They typically wear red or blue armor, but some have yellow armor. What is the Human name for them?

Answer: Elites

The Sangheili are called "Elites" because they are fast, powerful, and strong. The main troops of the Covenant, the Elites normally appear with a group of Grunts and or Jackals. The ones wearing blue or red armor carry plasma rifles or needlers. Some Elites wear yellow armor to denote their higher rank.

In "Halo: Combat Evolved", these carry energy swords. All Elites carry plasma grenades, but depending on the level or difficulty, they carry more or less. If surprised or when dying, Elites utter a growl or deep cry which is rather disconcerting, I think. Depending on the level, some running and dodging may be required before you can kill an Elite. Sangheili are the warriors, the middle caste of nobles within the Covenant.

The English translation of "Sangheili" means "I glorify my kin". Elites do glorify their kind, and fight for each other. Deeply religious, they fight for the Covenant religion, and will fight to the death without fleeing.
5. Uh-oh! Not those! Better run! The most powerful Covenant warriors you will see in "Halo: Combat Evolved", Mgalekgolo sport a cannon in one hand and a shield on the other. Is a Mgalekgolo, or Hunter, one sentient being?

Answer: No, it is made of many small sentient beings

True to their name (Mgalekgolo means congregation of Ophis, or snakes), Hunters are made of a colony of smaller organisms.
Many, many individual creatures shaped like worms and called Lekgolo make up one Mgalekgolo, commonly known as a Hunter. Together, Lekgolo can function as a being of certain intelligence and strength. One colony of Lekgolo make one Hunter. The colony is the orange spot that you can see on a Hunter's back or stomach. One shot to it will kill the Hunter because the colony has no protection. When the colony grows too big for one Mgalekgolo it will split into two Hunters. That is why you always see two together, unless, of course, you kill one.
Sporting an assault cannon in one hand and wielding a shield on the left arm, Hunters are the most to be feared Covenant creatures in "Halo". Despite having no definite rank other than being higher ranked than Grunts or Jackals, Hunters are the main impediment to your progress through the levels concerning the Covenant. Although the colony of orange Lekgolo is their Achilles heel, it is difficult to get a clear shot at it because the Hunter stoops to cover the spot with its arm or shield. Unfortunately, when you kill a Hunter, you cannot take its assault cannon, which is basically a mix of a more powerful plasma pistol bolt and a fuel rod.
6. Run for your life! It's the Flood! The Flood, the dreaded nemesis of both the humans and the Covenant, first appear in which level of "Halo"?

Answer: Level 6: "343 Guilty Spark"

This is probably the creepiest level in "Halo: Combat Evolved" because of all the suspense and gruesome details shown. At the beginning, you enter a gloomy, foggy swamp, fight through Grunts and Jackals that are acting scared, and find a building that Captain Keyes (the man you are trying to find) entered and never came out of. Going in, you encounter more Grunts and Jackals, blood on the walls, and dead Covenant and Marines.

After watching a video of Keyes and some marines getting killed by the Flood, you are immediately attacked yourself. The Flood is a species of parasitic beings that survive and spread by attaching to and contaminating hosts, other sentient creatures.

They were the reason the Halo rings were built; the Forerunners built them as a last resort to be used against the Flood.

The rings destroyed all living creatures if activated. Killing living beings takes away the Flood's food source, ensuring they would starve to death.
7. Run! The little insect things are coming! Different Flood forms have different uses. The most common Flood form, the infection form, does what?

Answer: Infects sentient beings

The infection form is the tiny, insect-like creatures that explode when shot, or when they attempt to infect the Master Chief (you). Their only effect on you is taking off a slight bit of shield, unless your shields are down. They are responsible for infecting and causing the mutation of other organisms. Flood combat forms are mutant humans or Covenant, generally Elites. Grunts and Jackals are considered by the Flood to be too weak for fighting, and Hunters, having no central system, are immune to infection. The Flood is definitely weaker than the Covenant in terms of fighting abilities, and depending on the level you can choose to completely ignore the infection form.

However, when they come in groups, a few shots will suffice because the explosion of one infection may cause others nearby to explode, too.
8. Hey, I know that guy! Oh, he's Flood, now. Run! Flood combat forms and carrier forms used to be other species of life, including humans. Can Covenant creatures mutate into Flood combat forms if infected?

Answer: Yes

No living organism has natural protection against the Flood. All are equally vulnerable to the infection. However, some human inventions and experiments can ward off or keep your body immune to the Flood. For example, The Master Chief's (the soldier you are playing) armor and shield keeps infection forms off you, and Sergeant Johnson was used for testing some experiment, resulting in his system being immune to Flood infections. Covenant are not only vulnerable, they also do not have adequate weapons for fighting the Flood.

Many are killed or infected, which is why the Covenant is so afraid of the Flood, as seen in level "343 Guilty Spark".
9. Run! Those things can fly! First seen in Level 6: "343 Guilty Spark", 343 Guilty Spark, a little moniter, turns out to be a villain. What are the flying robots that are under his command called?

Answer: Sentinels

343 Guilty Spark is the guardian of Halo, the ring that the Master Chief is on. He is an A1 monitor whose purpose is to annihilate the Flood. He finds the Master Chief, you, and picks you as the next Reclaimer. Your mission is to retrieve the Index and then use it to activate Halo. Along the way, Sentinels will help you off and on, meaning that depending on the level of difficulty, you will either have virtually nothing to do, or have to fight for their lives, too.

However, after learning the purpose of Halo (to destroy all life) 343 Guilty Spark, and, by default, the Sentinels, become your enemies. Sentinels are robots constructed by the Forerunners, the makers of the Halo.

They have a shield, which is their only defense, so if drained, Sentinels are completely vulnerable.

They fight with Sentinel Beams. The beams are rays of energy that shed red light. Like most Forerunner inventions, Sentinels were built to fight the Flood, so they are comparatively weak against humans or the Covenant.
10. I think they're angry. Run!!! Humans can be the Master Chief's enemy, too. Normally your allies, they will turn on you and shoot if you do what?

Answer: Kill two or more of them

Depending on the level, you may be able to get away, or not. In the first level "The Pillars of Autumn", killing anyone on the bridge will draw a "What the hell are you doing?!" from Cortana, and a group of invincible Marines will enter, locking the door.

There is no escape. In any other level, knocking one on the head or shooting at him will elicit a cry of "Hey, watch it!" If you kill one that way, or drive over one, the others will point their assault rifles at you, but won't shoot. A second murder like that will set them all on you.

However, you may be able to escape depending on whether there are enemies nearby, or if you have a Warthog to escape in. The UNSC Marine Corps are the troops that wage war against the Covenant alongside of the Master Chief John 117, whom you play.

They wear greenish-gray uniforms with camouflaged armor. They generally carry assault rifles, but in some levels, lack of these force them to carry pistols or Covenant weapons. Although they are deployed against the Covenant, they are not as strong as the aliens, and are practically hopeless against the Flood.
