Somewhere Only We Know Trivia Quiz

See if you can identify these locations, stages, or areas from some popular video games. For non-gamers, the picture clues may help. Then again, they may not, seeing as I drew them. Good luck, and I apologise to the art world. ;)

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 'Resident Evil' series primarily takes place in which location?

Answer: Raccoon City

Capcom's popular and long-running survival-horror series 'Resident Evil' started out in the late '90s in the aptly titled 'Resident Evil' for the PlayStation (later ported to the PC and Sega Saturn). Regarded as a landmark series for the survival-horror genre, and one of the first to actually coin the phrase "survival-horror", the 'Resident Evil' series has spanned numerous consoles over the years, and in 2002, made the jump to the silver screen.
2. In 'Halo: Combat Evolved', what is the name of one of the planets the human race has colonised?

Answer: Reach

Arguably one of Microsoft's most popular series for its Xbox consoles, 'Halo' changed the FPS genre in a way not seen since Rareware's 'GoldenEye 007'. The series centres around Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, or Master Chief as he is more commonly referred to.

The first game 'Halo: Combat Evolved', released for the Xbox in late 2001, gained widespread popularity and quickly became the highest-selling game for that console. However, its reign did not last long, as 'Halo 2' eclipsed the first, cementing itself at the top of the table in late 2004. With Microsoft's new console, the Xbox 360, came 'Halo 3' in late 2007, outselling its predecessor in day one sales. Later releases in the series include 'Halo Wars', 'Halo 3: ODST' and 'Halo: Reach'.
3. In 'Super Mario 64', what is the name of the thirteenth course, which can change size periodically when pipes are entered?

Answer: Tiny-Huge Island

When approaching the course paintings in Peach's Castle, one can choose the size of the island to begin with. For instance, by jumping into the small painting, the island starts out tiny, with Mario being bigger than the rest of the level. Conversely, entering the large painting will initially make the level huge, and Mario will be quite small in comparison.

There are six stars to collect in this course in the Nintendo 64 version of the game, while the Nintendo DS remake adds a seventh star.
4. What is the name of the road that runs outside City 17 in 'Half-Life 2'?

Answer: Highway 17

'Half-Life 2' continues the story established in 'Half-Life', and players once again take control of Gordon Freeman in a dystopian world. At one point in the game, Freeman must travel to Nova Prospekt, a security centre run by the menacing Combine, which can only be accessed by travelling on Highway 17. 'Half-Life 2' was critically acclaimed upon release, and has ranked highly on many 'Best Game' lists.
5. What is the first zone in Sonic's first game, 'Sonic the Hedgehog'?

Answer: Green Hill Zone

Sonic is to Sega what Mario is to Nintendo. In 1991, Sega released 'Sonic the Hedgehog' for their Genesis/Mega Drive console, and so began the legacy of the blue hedgehog. Perhaps the most memorable and recognisable level in all of Sonic's games is the very first one - Green Hill Zone. Aside from the many games that Sonic has appeared in, he has also made a name for himself in the cartoon market, most notably in 'Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog' in the 1990s.
6. In every 'Mario Kart' game, what is the name of the very last track in the Special Cup?

Answer: Rainbow Road

Each Rainbow Road in the series is infamous for its long length, twists and turns, and numerous hazards. Each incarnation of the track is suspended in space above a planet (although in 'Mario Kart: Double Dash', it is above Mushroom City). The road in 'Mario Kart 64' is slightly different to the rest, in that it has railings for the entire length and the only hazards are Chomps, who munch their way along the track in the opposite direction to the racers. All other incarnations generally have sections of railing missing and tight corners, where one mistake can send a racer flying off into space.
7. The ninth world in 'Banjo-Kazooie', which can be played in each of the four seasons, is named what?

Answer: Click Clock Wood

In their heyday, Rareware were at the forefront of gaming, with many successful games on various Nintendo platforms. One such game was 'Banjo-Kazooie' on the Nintendo 64, which was lauded as one of the console's best games, alongside other favourites like 'Super Mario 64' and 'The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time'. Centred around Banjo the bear and Kazooie the breegull, the duo were on a quest to rescue Banjo's kidnapped sister from the clutches of the evil witch Gruntilda.

The game was comprised of nine distinct worlds, accessed from various places throughout Gruntilda's Lair. Click Clock Wood was the ninth and final world of the game, before the series' traditional quiz and the final battle against Grunty.
8. Originally included in 'The Orange Box' collection, Valve's hit FPS/puzzle game 'Portal' is set where?

Answer: Aperture Laboratories

In 2007, 'Portal', along with 'Team Fortress 2', 'Half-Life 2', 'Half-Life 2: Episode One' and 'Half-Life 2: Episode Two', made up 'The Orange Box', a collection of games created by Valve. The company took an interest in a student-developed project called 'Narbacular Drop' and subsequently hired them to create 'Portal'.

The game's dark humour, innovative physics-based puzzles, and ingenious level designs saw it highly acclaimed by critics and players alike. In 2011, a sequel, 'Portal 2', was released to even higher acclaim. 'Portal' is set in Aperture Laboratories, a scientific research facility that exists within the 'Half-Life' universe, where a lone test subject, Chell, finds herself at the mercy of a sentient computer, GLaDOS, at the heart of the facility. Armed only with a device that can create two interdimensional portals, Chell must navigate through test chambers and confront GLaDOS so that she might escape.
9. Located in the 'Pokemon' land of Kanto is which mountain, known for its fossils and abundance of Clefairy?

Answer: Mt. Moon

Mt. Moon has appeared numerous times throughout each of the generations of 'Pokemon' games. First appearing in the Generation I games 'Red', 'Blue' and 'Yellow', Mt. Moon was a sprawling network of caves covering several floors. However, from Generation II onwards, it was significantly reduced to just one floor. Clefairy, a normal-type Pokemon, is found in only a couple of places in Kanto, Mt. Moon being one of them.

The mountain's name comes from the fact that meteor falls in the area leave behind meteorites that can be used to create special Pokemon evolution items called Moon Stones.
10. On which alien planet is Gearbox Software's 2009 FPS/RPG 'Borderlands' set?

Answer: Pandora

Dubbed by Gearbox as a role-playing shooter, 'Borderlands' takes place on the planet Pandora, where the mysterious Eridian Vault lies, supposedly containing priceless artifacts and technologies. Players can choose one of four classes (Siren, Berserker, Soldier, Hunter) to play as. 'Borderlands' can be played with one player, or with two on consoles via split-screen, or up to four online.

The game scales the difficulty of quests and enemies depending on the number of people present, but more valuable rewards can be obtained with more players.
