Test your knowledge on this fun, although in my opinion, far too short, "Sonic" game. This quiz is based on the version of "Sonic R" that appears on "Sonic Gems Collection" for the Nintendo Gamecube. Ready? Set? Go!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the first level in "Sonic R", which like many of the first levels in "Sonic" games, had a tropical theme?

Answer: Resort Island

This track took place on a tropical island, normally surrounded by sapphire waters. There were several bridges, lots of sand and lush greenery, many coconut trees, a few smaller islands, and quite a few rocks, some of which you could climb on. This course even had a waterfall in it.

An interesting fact about this stage is that at the beginning of each race a large flock of Flickies, as they appeared in "Sonic 3D Blast", could be seen.
2. Which of these are two things that you can collect to unlock characters?

Answer: Chaos Emeralds and Sonic Tokens

There were a total of seven Chaos Emeralds and twenty Sonic Tokens that could be collected. Flickies did appear, but were not collected for anything. There were many rings located on each course that were used to open up gates to shortcuts and give you speed boosts. Emblems, which either gave you rings, a water or lightning shield, or fleet feet could be found on some of the tracks. Sol Emeralds, Time Stones, and Chao have appeared in other "Sonic" games.
3. Which of these characters could reach the highest top speed?

Answer: Sonic

The original game manual stated that "Sonic is the fastest of all the racers.", and the manual for "Sonic Gems Collection" ranked Sonic's top speed with an "A". Although Sonic could run very quickly, his acceleration and ability to turn were not very well. Sonic's special ability was that he could double jump. Sonic, along with Tails and Knuckles, could also spin dash.
4. What was the second level in "Sonic R" called?

Answer: Radical City

This course, as its name suggests, had an urban setting. Here you ran through some very curvy city streets that were bordered by railing and surrounded by many tall buildings and flashing lights. There were also a couple of waterways that went through the track.

This level also had a roulette machine, and even a large pinball table that had a picture of Sonic in the middle of it. The "Sonic R" game logo could also be seen at a few places in this track.
5. Who was the only playable female character in "Sonic R"?

Answer: Amy

Amy raced in a car the entire time in this game. Amy's car had the ability to transform into a hovercraft when she went into the water. Amy's top speed was pretty low, but she had the ability to use turbo boost. Blaze, Rouge, and Cream did not appear in this game, but they all have appeared in "Sonic" games that were released later.
6. "Sonic R" is a playable game in "Sonic Gems Collection", but it originally was released for which of these video game consoles?

Answer: Sega Saturn

"Sonic R" was developed by Traveller's Tales and published by Sega. It was first released in North America on October 31, 1997. "Sonic R" was one of the three featured games on "Sonic Gems Collection", along with "Sonic the Fighters" and "Sonic CD".
7. Which of these is not a character that can be unlocked at some point in "Sonic R"?

Answer: Shadow the Hedgehog

To unlock many of the characters you first needed to find five Sonic Tokens on each track and finish the race in at least third place. Then you had to beat the character you were trying to unlock in a race. By doing this you could unlock Metal Sonic in Resort Island, Tails Doll in Radical City, Egg Robo in Regal Ruin, and Metal Knuckles in Reactive Factory. Robotnik could be unlocked by finishing in first in Radiant Emerald. Super Sonic could become playable after you found the emeralds in each course, and then finished in first place with them. Shadow the Hedgehog was not in this game.
8. Which of these is the name of the third level in "Sonic R"?

Answer: Regal Ruin

This stage was centered in some ancient Egyptian ruins (although they couldn't be too ancient because Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Robotnik each had pictures of their faces carved into the ruins). The track was usually surrounded by water, and many large pyramids could be seen in the distance. There were many different ways to go through this mazelike level.
9. "_______ is not as fast as Sonic, but he accelerates and corners well. Jump and grip are fairly good too, but best of all, he can fly!". This is a description of one of the characters in "Sonic R". Whose name goes in the blank to correctly complete the description?

Answer: Tails

The "Sonic Gems Collection" manual rated Tails' top speed with a "C", acceleration with a "B", turns with a "C", grip with an "A", and jump with a "B". Although Tails' top speed wasn't very fast, his acceleration could help him to get a slight head start over some characters, and also to recover his speed quickly if something slowed him down.
10. The "R" in "Sonic R" stands for "Riders".

Answer: False

It is not totally clear what the "R" stands for because it is never stated in the game, but it most likely stands for "Racing" because "Sonic R" is a racing game. The hidden song in the game, "Super Sonic Racing", also seems to suggest that it is for "Racing".

It definitely does not stand for "Riders". Only two players ride in anything, so that title would not make sense. There is a "Sonic" game called "Sonic Riders", in which the characters ride on "extreme gear", such as airboards, air bikes, and air skates.
11. What was the futuristic fourth level in "Sonic R" known as?

Answer: Reactive Factory

This level was full of tall machines, computers, and constantly flowing pipes. It was described by the original game manual as, "a completely automated wonder". This place was full of twists and turns, and it had many alternate routes that you could take.

There were even a couple submarines floating in the water that you could hop on top of. Black and yellow stripes could be seen almost everywhere here, most likely to give this course a more hazardous look. Numerous traffic cones were also placed all through the track, but they could easily be cleared out of the way by running into them.
12. Which of these statements is true about, or best describes, the lyrics of the songs that are played during the stages in "Sonic R"?

Answer: They are upbeat and optimistic.

The soundtrack was by Richard Jacques, and the vocals were provided by TJ Davis. The five songs that normally played during the levels were "Can You Feel the Sunshine?", "Living in the City", "Back in Time", "Work It Out", and "Diamond in the Sky". "Super Sonic Racing" could only be heard during a race if you played Radiant Emerald with Super Sonic.

The other song in the game was "You're My Number One", which was played while the credits for the game were being shown. There was also the option to turn the vocals off if you did not want to hear them while you were racing.
13. There were four different ways to play in the time attack mode in "Sonic R". In all of them you needed to complete something as quickly as possible. One of the ways to play was to complete three normal laps on a track. Which of these is NOT one of the other three ways to play in the time attack mode of the game?

Answer: Complete one lap on a course with one player, and then complete another lap with another.

The courses remained mostly unchanged in the time attack mode. The only differences were that there are no rings or emblems, so you could not open up gates, and that there were no other racers (unless you were trying to tag other characters). Only the best time was shown for each challenge in the time attack mode, but you could view the best times with each character if you went to the options screen.
14. "_______ is the overall well-balanced contestant in the race. His ability to stay on the road is outstanding, and cornering is good. _______ can glide after jumps.". The name of which character in "Sonic R" needs to go in the blanks to correctly complete the description?

Answer: Knuckles

Knuckles' top speed, turns, grip, and jump were each rated with a "B", and his acceleration was rated with a "C" in the manual from "Sonic Gems Collection". Like Sonic's ability to double jump or Tails' ability to fly, Knuckles' ability to glide could be useful for going over waterways and other obstacles.
15. What is the name of the fifth level, which has to be unlocked, in "Sonic R"?

Answer: Radiant Emerald

This level could be unlocked by coming in first place in the other four levels. Radiant Emerald was filled with many large gems that, along with the track, changed colors. The track took place in space, and some planets and stars were visible around the track. Also, unlike the other tracks, the ground on this one appeared to sparkle as you were running on it. To beat the game you simply had to come in first place in this stage (after you unlocked it).

By the way, just incase you didn't notice, all of the stages' names in "Sonic R" began with the letter "R".
