"The Longest Journey" (PC) is one of my favorite point-n-click PC adventures. It has funny dialogue, good voice acting and an intricate storyline (and it's LONG!). This quiz mentions a few of the memorable events, characters and locations in this game.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. April is a student at what school?

Answer: Venice Academy of the Visual Arts (VAVA)

The Venice academy is not in Italy! It's in the US, in the city of Newport. Not necessarily Newport, Rhode Island, though. The game never specifies, and just shows us parts of the big, futuristic city that April lives in.
2. What is April's last name (also a common male first name)?

Answer: Ryan

April is a Ryan by name, but not by blood. She is adopted and isn't terribly close to her family. A major theme of the game is April's self-discovery: finding out who she is and what she is capable of. April earns some interesting new names and titles as she makes her way in the game.
3. What is April's special ability?

Answer: She can open a shift between two worlds

Cortez helps April to learn that she is a Shifter and can open a doorway to another world at will. April had hints of this in her dreams, but never knew another world existed!

April is a painter. Her friend Emma makes 3D sculptures.

We don't know exactly how time passes while April is shifting between Marcuria and Newport, but she has no control over it. There are beings in the game that exist outside of time, but they are not Shifters.

Adventure game characters do seem to run for hours and never get tired, but this isn't really unique to April!
4. Arcadia is the world of logic.

Answer: False

Arcadia is the world of magic and chaos, where the city of Marcuria is situated. Stark is the world of logic and science. Newport is in Stark.
5. What is the force that stabilizes the two worlds? Something has gone wrong, and April must restore it.

Answer: The Balance

The Balance is essential to keeping the two divided worlds functioning harmoniously. April witnesses magic slipping into the rational world before she has learned about the problems with the Balance. While at the Fringe bar one night, a magical Banda creature (it resembles a large mole) materializes out of a blue haze to play a flute and take a spin on the dance floor.

Penumbra is the name of the first chapter of the game. Stasis is just made up.
6. Anyone who's played the game will remember April's wise-cracking sidekick Crow. But do you remember where they first met?

Answer: April wins him as a prize at the Cups Handler's booth.

This was a little bit tricky. Crow first meets April at the cup handler's gambling booth, but they don't join up as friends immediately. She brings him back to the sailor, who proceeds to trap him right back in a chest (where poor Crow has lived for most of his life.) Crow escapes on his own and chooses to help April as she ventures into Riverwood Forest. Lucky for Crow, he is never a victim of the Gribbler.

It's a bizarre quest but it is worth it for Crow! My favorite character in the game!
7. Vestrum Tobias tells April she is to be the next Guardian, the person who watches over the 2 worlds, keeping chaos and order in equilibrium. She will be which number Guardian to take up watch?

Answer: 13th

The Guardian inhabits the Guardian's Tower in a realm outside of both Arcadia and Stark. The scenes in the very beginning of the game can now make some sense to the player. The 12th Guardian is past his time, and the Tower has begun to reject him. He can no longer guard the balance, leaving both worlds vulnerable. April must find a way to the Guardian's Realm so she can take over the job.
8. How often is a Guardian replaced?

Answer: Every 1,000 years

1000 years is no small commitment of time! April struggles with the notion of giving up life as she knows it for a millennium. As the game progresses, she comes to terms with this apparent destiny.
9. How does April defeat Roper Klacks, the arrogant alchemist who has stolen the wind?

Answer: She traps him in a calculator during a math contest

It only makes sense because the calculator is a machine of pure logic, the opposite of the magical, chaotic world Klacks lives in. They do have a series of bizarre competitions (spelling, cooking, and hopscotch), but it turns out Klacks is skilled in all 3!

Another great and nutty character from this game!
10. This man gives April a pocket watch that will help her return to Stark. He once knew Cortez, and has lived in both worlds for longer than would seem possible for a human. What is his name?

Answer: Brian Westhouse

It's not know how Brian got to Arcadia, as he can't shift like April. He met Cortez while in Tibet in the 1930's. He spent a few hundred years trapped between the two worlds under some very mysterious circumstances. April never learns his full story in TLJ. The later games in the series go into much more detail about Brian Westhouse.
11. Which two similar-but-different races of beings does April reunite on her quest?

Answer: The Maerum and the Alatien

The mermaid-like Maerum live under the water, while the Alatien have wings and live on mountain cliffs. The two races shared a common heritage (the game hints they were descended from the Draic-Kin), and thrived while they lived near each other. As they drifted apart, moving further under the ocean, and higher up in the sky, both races suffered and faced the possibility of dying out. April reconnects them via a series of quests.
12. The Draic Kin are ancient, mysterious beings connected to everything in the game. Each of the 4 Draic Kin is associated with a color. What are they?

Answer: Red, green, blue, and white

There are 2 Draic Kin in each world. The red and green live in Stark, and the white and blue live in Arcadia. April learns they were present for, and possibly responsible for the division of Earth into 2 worlds.
13. "Enter honored guest and I would have been with you presently." What being said this, showing his tendency to mix up past, present, and future in any given sentence?

Answer: Abnaxus

His name sounds like obnoxious, and many people think speaking to him is just that! It's not his fault. Abnaxus is a Venar, a race of beings who perceive all of time and all possibilites at once. It is very difficult for them to focus on any one moment in time. Abnaxus is one of the few of his kind that will even speak to outsiders, most finding it frustratingly impossible.
14. Who is the green of the Draic Kin?

Answer: Jacob McAllen

It would appear that not all the Draic Kin are benevolent beings. When I first played TLJ, I didn't understand Jacob and Gordon's connection. Jacob McAllen wanted control over the next Guardian, so he could exploit both worlds to his own ends. He located Gordon (a potential Guardian candidate), and proceeded to experiment on him. Gordon's self or soul was split into 2 grotesque halves. One was a cold, calculating killer, and the other a swirly mass of chaos and destruction, the Chaos storm.
15. What must April bring to hacker Burns Flipper before he will make her a fake ID?

Answer: an anti-gravity control unit

Burns Flipper's profanity-laced dialogue is single-handedly responsible for the game's Mature ESRB rating! April is able to provide him with a new anti-grav unit for his floating chair by stealing it from a crashed spacecraft. The shuttle just happened to crash outside the Marcuria police station. Just another one of the creative plot points in this game!
16. Back at the Border House, which one of April's friends was shot by the Vanguard after warning her to run?

Answer: Emma

April assumes the gunshot has killed Emma, but learns later from Lady Alvane (who appears to be able to see the goings-on in both worlds) that Emma survived. Zack, however, who is decidedly not April's friend, did not fare so well. After ratting out her whereabouts to the Vanguard as revenge for April standing him up, he is shot and killed on the spot.
17. The off-world colonies are horrible places, owned and controlled by corporations. A colonist signs away all rights and privileges to work as a near-slave. Only the most desperate would apply. Why then, does April register for one of these space outposts?

Answer: To reach the Guardian's Realm, which is located near the space station/ shuttle depot

Gordon Holloway does follow her up to the station, but April is not aware of this. The Dark People's star map shows her the location of the Guardian Realm, located near the Morning Star space station. She must sign up as a colonist to board a shuttle.
18. In the Guardian's Realm, April (with a little help from Crow) faces three trials before she can enter the Tower. The Trial of Spirit is the second of these.

Answer: True

Here, April must deal with painful memories of her alcoholic father and the abuse she suffered as a little girl. The Trial of Might and The Trial of Matter are the others.
19. No adventure game would be complete without the main character having to collect some difficult-to-obtain objects. What does April need four of to complete the Stone Disk?

Answer: 4 stones from various cultures in Arcadia

The stones are dragon's eye gems, entrusted to different groups of Arcadia's residents by the Draic Kin. When completed with all 4 stones, the Disk will act as a key to allow entry to the Guardian's Tower.
20. After passing the trials, April becomes the next Guardian.

Answer: False

Gordon Holloway becomes the 13th Guardian. He followed April, Adrian, and Crow to the Tower, meaning to do harm, but April reunites the his divided halves and he is changed into a being of light. He takes up the role of Guardian and begins to make things right shortly after.

We get a few hints at what happens to April, but you won't know until you play the next two games!
