Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who says "it's looking good, Fox"?

Answer: Falco

At the end of each stage, Fox checks in with all his wingmen, and their responses are dependent on how much shield they have remaining. Falco says "it's looking good, Fox" when he his shield is at 75%.
2. Which boss has the dimensions H25 x W22 x D31?

Answer: Phantron

All four of these bosses appear on Venom, towards the end of the game, Phantron on Course 1, Metal Smasher and Galactic Rider on Course 2, and Great Commander on Course 3. Phantron's first appearance is in Venom's orbit stage, and he then returns in a more formidable form in Venom's surface stage.
3. There are two stages in which it is possible to loop infinitely, thereby enabling one to power up one's weapons to the maximum. The Black Hole is one such stage; what is the other?

Answer: Titania

The Black Hole has three exits: Sector Y, Sector Z and Venom. If Fox does not take the third exit, the stage loops back to the approach to the first exit, meaning he can pick up the twin blasters again. At the beginning of Titania, Fox approaches three doors. To progress in the stage, he needs to take the Weather Control behind the right-hand door. However, there are twin blasters behind the middle door, and should he go that way, the stage loops back to the approach to the three doors, and the twin blasters are once again available for collection.

It is also possible to loop infinitely in the Space Armada. This is accomplished by not flying into the two huge spaceships that appear at 33% and 66% distance into the stage. However, endlessly powering up is not possible here, as the twin blasters are at the very beginning of the stage, and thus do not feature in the loops.
4. How many legs does Dancing Insector have?

Answer: Five

Despite the name, Dancing Insector has five legs, not six. At the start of the battle, three of his legs need to be weakened to make him collapse and start spinning. This process is then repeated, after which he turns red and becomes vulnerable.
5. Flying through the "Middle Ring" replenishes the majority of Fox's shield and creates a checkpoint from which he will start if he should subsequently lose a life on that stage. Most stages have one Middle Ring, but two stages have two. The Space Armada is one; what is the other?

Answer: Fortuna

The Space Armada's Middle Rings appear just past the exits of the two huge ships Fox has to fly into to destroy. There is a Middle Ring on Fortuna every time the nature of the surface changes (grass to water, and then water to desert).
6. Which of these bosses is the odd one out musically?

Answer: Plasma Hydra

Attack Carrier and Destructor both appear on Corneria, Attack Carrier on Courses 1 and 2 and Destructor on Course 3. As a result, the same music plays when they appear. The only other time in the game this tune appears is during the Dancing Insector encounter on the Battle Base Meteor. The battle with Plasma Hydra features the boss theme first heard in Stage 2 of Courses 1, 2 and 3.
7. In Sector Y, if certain conditions are met, a fish appears that drops large shield rings, an invincibility shield, twin blasters, and a multitude of nova bombs - very useful for the upcoming Plasma Hydra encounter. What does one need to do to get this fish to appear?

Answer: Shoot all the small stingrays

For the amateur player, this fish is an absolute godsend, as Plasma Hydra is one of the hardest bosses in the game. Missing the Middle Ring in space stages causes a bird to appear, which drops several small shield rings, but no such consolation prize exists on the surface stages.
8. At the beginning of which stage does Peppy say "incoming enemy craft"?

Answer: Asteroid Belt (Course 3)

Regardless of the course chosen, Stage 2 always begins with a comment from a wingman. On Courses 1 and 2, Falco says "here they come"; on Course 3, Peppy says "incoming enemy craft". Interestingly, the start of Sector Z is very similar to that of the Asteroid Belt (Course 3), but no comment is made.
9. The background used during the final battle with Andross is very similar to another background found elsewhere in the game. Where is it?

Answer: The Black Hole

The background in the Black Hole is the same as the one during the Andross battle, except that the colours are different. A similar swirling effect is used in Out Of This Dimension, up until the boss is defeated, but the background is completely different.
10. During the ending sequence, we are shown images of and information about all the bosses that have been faced. Both Course 1 and Course 2 feature Attack Carrier and Rock Crusher as the first two bosses. In the ending sequence, how is the Course 2 Rock Crusher different from its Course 1 counterpart?

Answer: The camera is more zoomed out

On account of the camera being more zoomed out, the Course 2 Rock Crusher naturally appears smaller, but its dimensions are exactly the same. The battles themselves do have subtle differences: for example, the Course 1 Rock Crusher has a longer shield bar but takes more damage per hit; the Course 2 Rock Crusher has a greater percentage of its shield left when it discharges its fuselage, making for a tougher battle against the barrage of missiles and plasma balls that the remainder of the ship fires.
