Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Tourist found himself in the pleasant settlement of Pallet Town. The 'Pokémon Red/Blue' brochure he had bought along with his plane ticket said that a variety of Pokémon would be available for him to select from upon his arrival. When The Tourist was told by the resident professor that Pikachu was unavailable, he flipped! What is the name of Pallet Town's professor?

Answer: Professor Oak

Professor Oak had to explain to The Tourist that travelling with Red/Blue Airlines does not entitle the ticket holder to a Pikachu. "Are you telling me that I can't have a Pikachu on a technicality?" raged The Tourist. Oak tentatively responded, "I am not for one second suggesting that you are a budget tourist, but Pikachu is only available to passengers on the more upmarket Yellow Airlines".

Let's get back to reality for a second! In the 'Pokémon Red' and 'Pokémon Blue' games, the player has to choose a starter Pokémon out of Squirtle, Charmander and Bulbasaur which are Water, Fire and Grass types respectively. In 'Pokémon Yellow', the player has to start with Pikachu, the Pokémon given by Pallet Town's Professor Oak.
2. The Tourist made his way to Pewter City, hoping to meet other people interested in the chemistry of alloys but instead he just met a bunch of entomologists. The Tourist went to Pewter Gym to complain but all he found was a lover of rocks! Which character, who fights with Geodude and Onix, did The Tourist insult by calling him a "mediocre geologist"?

Answer: Brock

Brock is the leader of Pewter Gym which, in 'Pokémon Red/Blue', specialises in Rock/Ground-type Pokémon. The two Pokémon that Brock uses when a player enters into a battle with him are Geodude, a cool piece of rock with "muscular" arms, and Onix, a chain of rocks with a spike on the top of its head. Depending on what Pokémon you start with, Brock is pretty easy to defeat; Grass-type Bulbasaur and Water-type Squirtle being more effective than the Fire-type Charmander.

Maybe The Tourist would be less offensive to Brock if the gym leader's Onix had evolved into Steelix, the Pokémon's steel content being of interest to the anorak, no doubt. In 'Pokémon Red/Blue' there is actually a museum in Pewter City but it is primarily a building containing fossils.
3. The Tourist was rather fatigued after exploring Kanto on foot, so he decided to visit the Bike Shop in Cerulean City. Well, The Tourist thought that the price the bicycles were being sold at was outrageous. He decided to complain at Cerulean Gym but was told off for running alongside a pool by a trainer that battles with Staryu and Starmie. What is the name of this trainer?

Answer: Misty

In 'Pokémon Red/Blue', the player will battle Misty who is a Water-type specialist. Her two Pokémon of choice are Staryu, shaped like a five-armed starfish, and Starmie, a Pokémon similar to Staryu but with more elaborate characteristics. Indeed, Staryu evolves into Starmie. If the player can beat Misty then the Cascade Badge, which looks like a raindrop, is awarded in addition to the Boulder Badge which would already have been awarded by Brock in Pewter City.

A Bike Shop is also found in Cerulean City and the initial asking price for a bicycle is 1,000,000 Pokémon Dollars. However, a Bike Voucher is given later in the game and this can be used at the shop to purchase a bicycle free of charge.
4. A cruise on the S.S. Anne was next on the itinerary, so The Tourist made his way to Vermilion City. Just as The Tourist was about to embark he was told by staff that he was late and would have to wait three days for the next trip. Furious, The Tourist went to lodge a complaint at the local gym but the gym leader had very little sympathy. What is the name of this gym leader who battles with Voltorb, Pikachu and Raichu?

Answer: Lt. Surge

Lt. Surge is the gym leader in Vermilion City and he has an Electric-type Pokémon specialty. If a player can defeat Lt. Surge they receive the Thunder Badge, one of the eight badges needed to gain access to Indigo Plateau where the Elite Four are found. The Elite Four, considered four of the best Pokémon trainers in the Kanto and Johto regions, are Lorelei, Bruno, Agatha and Lance.

The S.S. Anne is a cruise liner that stops in the port at Vermilion City. In the 'Blue and Red' games, access to the ship is gained upon receipt of an S.S. Ticket from Bill. Bill can be found outside of Cerulean City and his favourite Pokémon is reportedly Eevee with its ability to evolve into a wide variety of other Pokémon. This very versatile Pokémon evolves when it is subjected to the powers of evolutionary stones such as the Water Stone, Thunderstone and Fire Stone.
5. The Tourist visited Lavender Town where he was led to believe that he could compete with a gym leader for a badge. When he was told that there was no gym he asked if there was anybody willing to take his complaint. Acting upon advice received, The Tourist went to see Mr. Fuji who offered him a gift as an apology. The Tourist mocked Mr. Fuji with a Lady Gaga song: "Can't read my, can't read my No he can't read my ___" What item does Mr. Fuji give to the protagonist?

Answer: Poké Flute

I apologise for shamelessly cashing in on the success of Lady Gaga's 'Poker Face', I doubt The Tourist's 'Poké Flute' will pose any threat to the Gaga phenomenon.

The Poké Flute, given by Lavender Town's Mr. Fuji, is used in 'Red and Blue' to bring Pokémon out of slumber. This is very useful in two main instances whereby a sleeping Snorlax blocks the protagonist's progression along Routes 12 and 16.
6. As The Tourist arrived in Celadon City, he realised that he was short on cash. He needed to buy a few items at the Poké Mart so decided to gamble the money he did have left in the hope of winning. When The Tourist inevitably lost all his money he decided to complain to Erika in the local gym. She said that she was not involved in the dealings of the casino and that all complaints should be directed to the owners. Who clandestinely ran Game Corner in Celadon City?

Answer: Team Rocket

The most visible members of Team Rocket in the anime are Jessie, James and their talking cat-like Pokémon, Meowth. In the 'Pokémon Red' and 'Pokémon Blue' games, one of the big players is the Team Rocket leader, Giovanni. Giovanni appears in the game multiple times including at Viridian City Gym where he is the gym leader. He battles with Rhyhorn, Dugtrio, Nidoqueen, Nidoking and Rhydon which are all primarily Ground-type Pokémon. In 'Pokémon Yellow', Rhyhorn is replaced with Meowth's evolution, Persian.

In the Game Boy games, the casino is initially called Team Rocket Game Corner. However, once the protagonist defeats Giovanni, Team Rocket flee and the casino comes under city ownership as Celadon City Game Corner.

The gym leader in Celadon City is Erika, who specialises in Grass-type and Poison-type Pokémon. In 'Red and Blue', Erika uses three Pokémon in the battle for the Rainbow Badge and they are Victreebel, Tangela and Vileplume.
7. With the money earned by defeating Erika, The Tourist visited another city in the hope of making more money. In this city's gym, The Tourist faced Koga but he got more than he bargained for. He was so furious that he was poisoned during the battle, that by the end it was not just the Pokémon that were in conflict! Which city did Koga lead a gym?

Answer: Fuchsia City

Koga, the leader of Fuchsia City Gym, specialises in Poison-type Pokémon. When the protagonist battles Koga, the gym leader uses Muk, Weezing, Koffing and another Koffing. Koffing, which makes many appearances in the anime due to a member of Team Rocket frequently using the Pokémon in battle, eventually evolves into Weezing.

When Koga is defeated the Soul Badge is awarded and by extension HM Surf (HM03) can be used outside of battles. Lapras is an example of a Pokémon that can be taught to use Surf by HM03 as well as being able to learn Strength via HM04.
8. With his new found fortune, The Tourist wished to buy some expensive spices in Saffron City. When The Tourist discovered that spices could not be bought in the town, he didn't question his own intelligence but instead got angry! He resorted to his usual ways and headed off to the local gym to complain but what problem would he have encountered?

Answer: There is more than one gym in Saffron City

Saffron City is unique amongst the Kanto settlements in that it has two gyms. Only one gym is "official" (awards one of the game's eight badges) whilst the other is a meeting place for Fighting-type Pokémon specialists. In 'Pokémon Red' and 'Pokémon Blue', the protagonist can choose between two Pokémon, Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan, after successfully defeating the Fighting Dojo leader. In these games, this is the only place where Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan can be acquired without using trade functions.

The official Saffron City Gym is led by Psychic specialist, Sabrina. She uses Alakazam, Mr. Mime, Kadabra and Venomoth in battle and if she is defeated she awards the Marsh Badge. In 'Pokémon Yellow' Sabrina uses only three Pokémon and they are all related to each other by evolution: Abra, Kadabra and Alakazam.
9. The Tourist travelled to one of the more remote parts of Kanto, Cinnabar Island. He found the area so peaceful that he even considered buying a mansion on the island! In 'Pokémon Red' and 'Pokémon Blue', the switches found in Cinnabar Island's mansion are shaped like what Pokémon with the number 150?

Answer: Mewtwo

Mewtwo, a character at the heart of the earliest movie in the Pokémon franchise, is one of the most desirable Generation I Pokémon. In 'Red and Blue' there is only one opportunity to catch Mewtwo in the wild and this chance arises when exploring Cerulean Cave.

The story goes that the genesis of Mewtwo was scientifically engineered by, amongst others, Dr. Fuji and Cinnabar Island's resident gym leader, Blaine. The newly-created Mewtwo escaped from the mansion on Cinnabar Island and sought refuge in the depths of Cerulean Cave.
10. After a long holiday in Kanto, The Tourist made his way to the final destination of Viridian City. When The Tourist arrived he became rather annoyed because he had already been here before! He made his way to Viridian City Gym where he would face Giovanni. Which of the following Pokémon, the evolved form of Diglett, does Giovanni use in the battle for the Earth Badge?

Answer: Dugtrio

Dugtrio, which is the evolved form of Diglett, is one of the five Pokémon used by Giovanni in his battles at Viridian City Gym. By defeating Giovanni and his team of Rhyhorn, Dugtrio, Nidoqueen, Nidoking and Rhydon, the eighth and final badge, the Earth Badge, is awarded.

This allows the protagonist to face the Elite Four at Indigo Plateau. After defeating the Elite Four, the current champion Gary, or whatever user-generated name he goes by, will invite you to battle. If Gary is beaten then the challenger (you!) becomes the Pokémon League Champion and entry to Cerulean Cave is granted.
