Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Arguably the most highly successful arcade game ever came out in 1978. The video game was a two-person shooter where you controlled a laser cannon and shot down alien ships that moved horizontally above you. What is the name of this groundbreaking game?

Answer: Space Invaders

It's estimated by 2016, 2.8 BILLION dollars were generated from "Space Invaders". The game was adapted from the developer's love of H.G. Wells' book "The War Of The Worlds" and the blockbuster movie, "Star Wars". Many acknowledge the creation of "Space Invaders" as the start of the golden age of video games.
2. Ranked as one of the biggest selling arcade games of all-time is "Pac-Man", earning close to 2.5 billion dollars by 2016. Which of these games was NOT released after "Pac-Man"?

Answer: Doctor Pac-Man

After Namco and Midway Games broke away from each other, spinoffs and unauthorized bootlegs of Pac-Man started to appear in the marketplace. "Ms. Pac-Man" was the exception to the rule as it generated its own franchise after its release in 1981. "Baby Pac-Man" and "Professor Pac-Man" were actual games that never reached the level of success of their predecessors.
3. Debuting in 1991, "Street Fighter II" became the most popular fighting game of its generation. In the arcade, you chose a fighter and memorized button combinations to unleash special moves to attack your opponent. How many buttons did the arcade version have?

Answer: 6

There were eight playable characters in the original 1991 version of "Street Fighter II". These included E. Honda (the Sumo wrestler), Dhalsim (an Indian Yoga master), and Blanka (a giant Brazilian mutant). The arcade version required the player to master combinations with up to six buttons.
4. Universal Studios unsuccessfully sued Nintendo for copyright infringement for their video game, "Donkey Kong". Which blockbuster movie did Universal Studio claim was being ripped off?

Answer: King Kong

In the original video game, Mr. Video tried to rescue Lady from the giant ape. Newer versions of "Donkey Kong" changed the characters to the more familiar, Mario coming to save Pauline. Apes are not featured in "Jaws" or "Jumanji" and "The Grape Ape" was a Saturday morning cartoon, not a motion picture.
5. "Finish him!" Which 1992 Midway arcade game known for its gruesome and bloody kills was turned into a 1995 martial arts movie?

Answer: Mortal Kombat

Developed by Ed Boon and John Tobias, "Mortal Kombat" was one of the first games to alarm parents to the violence depicted in video games. After a Congressional hearing, the Entertainment Software Rating Board was established to identify the appropriate age level for a video game.
6. Unlike "Space Invaders" which kept you in a stationary linear position, which 1979 vector graphic video game required you to move around and defend your ship against attacks coming in every direction?

Answer: Asteroids

To many gamers, "Asteroids" became the new and improved version of "Space Invaders". Centered in the middle of the screen, you were required to constantly keep rotating your weapon to fight off the constant flow of debris coming at you. Over 100,000 arcade cabinets of "Asteroids" were sold since 1979.
7. "He's On Fire!" "Boomshakalaka!" Which two word title describes a basketball inspired game which debuted in 1989 and featured a high flying two-on-two contest?

Answer: NBA Jam

"NBA Jam" received a lot of extra hype by the addition of official licensing of NBA players and their digital images. Playing with the actual superstars like Michael Jordan and Larry Bird was unique to the "NBA Jam" concept. The designer of the game wasn't a Chicago Bulls fan and in 2008, designer Mark Turmell confirmed he coded a little extra bias against the Bulls in the programming.
8. "Pole Position" was the highest grossing video game in 1983 in North America. The auto racing game was developed by Toru Iwatani, who is most famous for his creation of what "whocka whocka" video game?

Answer: Pac-Man

"Pole Position" was launched not only as a stand-up video game, it was also released in a sit down cockpit styled format. In each version, you had control of a steering wheel and a gear shifter, but the cockpit version also gave you control of the Formula One car's brakes.

The initial version of the game was designed to simulate the actual Fuji Speedway in Japan. "Whocka whocka" refers to the sound that Pac-Man makes while eating up the white dots on the board.
9. Which multi-legged insect is the title character in Atari's 1980 blockbuster video game?

Answer: Centipede

"Centipede" required players to use a track ball to spin and shoot lasers at the incoming enemy. You were distracted by a field of mushrooms on the game monitor. If you hit the centipede in the middle, it would divide into two separate and independently moving centipedes and make your game much more difficult. Your goal was to hit it in the head and disable his advancement.
10. In 1997, "Beatmania" required players to become virtual DJs and keep the beat using rhythm pads. This type of game launched the merging of music and video games. Which of these later games is NOT a successful music themed video game?

Answer: Hoe Down

"Guitar Hero" was the offshoot of a Japanese game called "Guitar Freaks". "Rock Band" upped the ante by offering players the opportunity to play guitar, bass, drums, or even sing during the chosen song. "Just Dance", along with "Dance Dance Revolution", got players off their couch and required they step onto a giant controller pad to move their feet in line with the dance moves of the song.
