Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Released by the illustrious Atari game company in 1980, this game put the player into the perspective of a moveable gun. The mission of the player was to destroy a large insect, as well as destroy other bugs in the area. What multi-legged game is this?

Answer: Centipede

Although simplistic in nature, the meat behind the game was its varying difficulty and its alluring colour schemes. The player of the game had to blast away a centipede coming from the top of the screen. A dead centipede part would turn into a motionless obstacle on the map, while the rest of the centipede attacked. The game also had a sequel entitled "Millipede", in 1982.
2. Yet another game by Atari released in 1980 was this game where the objective of the player was to blast missiles at enemy lasers shooting down to Earth. The safety of a small town was in the hands of the player. What game was this?

Answer: Missile Command

The game was another one of the hits released in what is now known as the "Golden Age of Gaming". The idea was simple, however the excruciating difficulty, especially in the later stages, of the game, proved to be more than sufficient enough to make the game popular.

There was also an interesting glitch in the game where after you gain a certain amount of points, 137 buildings are added to your city.
3. The essence of a true stealth game requires true cunning to master. More or less this stealth game, set in WWII, forced the player into the role of an allied soldier trying to escape a castle belonging to the Nazis. Demons and other horrors awaited the player as well. What howlingly cool 1981 game was this?

Answer: Castle Wolfenstein

The player of the game, although recommended, did not have to use stealth to accomplish their missions. They could shoot their way through the levels, wear disguises, or for a real challenge, sneak through. After some debate, "Wolfenstein" was later released as an action first-person shooter.
4. This game, released in 1981, and created by Namco, serves as a direct sequel to 1979's "Galaxian". This time, however, the controllable ship could fire faster, and even go through worm holes where bonus points are awarded. What game was this?

Answer: Galaga

"Galaga" was one of the biggest hits of the 1980s. Although it mimicked the gameplay elements of "Galaxian", it was more widely accepted than its predecessor. Even today, the original arcade cabinet is one of the most sought after by game collectors, and can thus be very expensive to purchase. Fortunately, several compilation games on modern platforms allow even the modern gamer to play this classic.
5. Sure tunneling wasn't the most popular past-time of 1982 but this game, about a digging creature with an air-pump to blow up enemies, more than proved to be popular in the gaming community. What Namco game was this?

Answer: Dig-Dug

The name of the main character in the game was "Dig-Dug". The character's role was to dig through the ground while avoiding Pookas and Fygars, which are essentially monsters that live underground. To eliminate them, the player could either tunnel and drop rocks on top of them, or pump them up and detonate them with their on-hand air-pumps.

The game was popular for much of the 1980s, and still remains one of the most successful arcade hits of all time.
6. This game was one of the earliest examples of the now un-inspired platform genre. An evil gorilla has captured the main character's girlfriend and it is up to the player to dodge barrels, and other obstacles in order to free her. What game was this?

Answer: Donkey Kong

"Donkey Kong" was one of Nintendo's first attempts to crack the US gaming market. The game proved to be a good move. It was fun, challenging, and had a story. Levels got progressively harder, and the player had to be more and more alert to overcome the many obstacles created by the gorilla antagonist.
7. Although the age of adventure, and the 'Scramble For Africa' had ended long before 1982, Atari still decided to make an adventure game with an emphasis on African adventure. The game put the player into the role of Harry, and his job was to use vines, and other jungle plants to avoid pits, alligators and other obstacles. What game was this?

Answer: Pitfall!

The idea for the game was thought up in a span of ten minutes, by its lead programmer, David Crane. It did, however, take 1000 hours of programming to create the game now known as "Pitfall!". The player of the game had to collect 32 treasures in a set time limit of 20 minutes.

It was one of the first games to include multi-colored environments and animated CPU movements. It's sheer ingenuity proved to be a high selling point as it went on to sell over 4 million copies on the Atari 2600.
8. Driving a car seemed to be the big topic of games in the early days of gaming. Midway, a once prominent company, decided to make a game that put the player into a car and didn't require racing, but rather the use of machine guns and rockets to battle enemy spies. What rubber-burning classic is this?

Answer: Spy Hunter

"Spy Hunter", introduced several revolutionary new features that forever redefined the driving genre of games. Instead of a straight track to race on, the developers at Midway decided to add turns, and other environmental effects to make the game more entertaining. The use of guns and rockets in a driving game also proved radical enough to sell copies of the game.
9. This game, released in 1983 for the arcade, was the first that the gaming community ever saw of 'Jumpman's' Mario incarnation. It also introduced Mario's brother, Luigi, to the mix. What slightly overlooked classic is this?

Answer: Mario Brothers

"Mario Bros." was a two-dimensional platform game. The purpose of the game was to defeat the enemies of the map, such as Shellcreepers, Sidesteppers, and Fighter Flies by bumping the platform they're standing on, from beneath them. This game marked the first time that Mario was seen as Mario, and not Jumpman, as well as the game debut of Luigi.
10. Many children nowadays get jobs related to delivering newspapers. One thing's for sure: they will never experience the crazy things that the main character of this massively popular paper delivery simulator did. What 1984 headline of a game was this?

Answer: Paperboy

The player controls a boy on a bicycle, who has to deliver papers to a neighborhood. The game takes place over a one week span, and it is up to the player to successfully deliver all the newspapers to the designated neighborhoods. Things that could prevent the player from successfully getting the job done are dogs, cars, bad throws, and slippery puddles. Since the focus of the game was wacky fun, it was a silent hit in the gaming world.
