Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bethesda Softworks, the infamous company behind "The Elder Scrolls" game series, took on the third iteration of this post-apocalyptic franchise. Taking place in a devastated Washington D.C., this game put the player into the perspective of a vault-dweller who left his more or less secure vault to find his father. What game was this?

Answer: Fallout 3

Released for the PC, PS3, and X-Box 360, "Fallout 3" took several years of development and deviated from the gameplay style of previous iterations of the franchise. First off, the game became a first-person adventure like "TES IV: Oblivion". Other games in the franchise featured a top down approach to the action.

The switch of perspective was hit and miss with players, but it really was just a matter of preference. The game was a solid hit, selling millions upon millions of units. As well, the game received countless awards at the end of the year. "Fallout 3" was named the best PC game by "Gamespy" and "Gamespot", and best RPG by TV's "X-Play", Spike TV's Game Awards, "IGN", and "Gamespot".

It also received game of the year honors from "Official X-Box Magazine" and "Gamesradar".
2. Markus Fenix made his anticipated return in 2008. The mysterious tough-guy from 2006's "Gears of War" had returned to fight the Locust Horde with some new and familiar weaponry. What was the name of "Gears of War's" X-Box 360 exclusive sequel?

Answer: Gears of War 2

"Gears of War 2" stuck with the formula that it was comfortable with in it's 2008 sequel. Featuring it's over-the-shoulder camera view, the duck and cover system was streamlined and the combat was intensified, making for a more complete gaming experience than the first game.

Not only did the game boast a high number of sales, it was also given very solid reviews all across the board. It won dozens of awards including "Best Action Game" by "Game Critics", and "Best X-Box 360 Game" during the popular Spike Videogame Awards.
3. A return to Liberty City? Check. An Eastern European ready to wage war in order to achieve the "American Dream"? Check. Released for the PC, PS3, and X360 this open world game improved the famous mechanics of the popular franchise to get a more complete gaming experience. The player could steal cars and commit horrific crimes, or the player could be a conscientious citizen. The choice was up to them. What grand game was this?

Answer: Grand Theft Auto 4

Rockstar, one of the most controversial, yet one of the most successful companies in gaming entertainment created "Grand Theft Auto 4", to follow up it's tried and tested franchise of games. It featured highly updated graphics, a gigantic open-world map, and hundreds of extra hours of gameplay.

It's story was also well done, with all key plot points unraveling at the right times. Like all of the other games in the "GTA" franchise, this game was flooded with perfect reviews. Apart from the buggy and poorly optimized PC version, the game was a tremendous success, winning such awards as "Game of the Year" and "Best Story" from such reputable gaming publishers as "Gametrailers", "IGN", "Game Informer", "Gamespy", and many more.
4. Created by Valve software, this game put the player right into every paranoid person's nightmare. Featuring the player and only three other humans, the player had to survive an ongoing zombie menace in several heart-racing locales. Which terrifying, yet somehow satisfying game was this?

Answer: Left 4 Dead

Released for the PC and the 360, "Left 4 Dead" used "Half Life 2's" Source Engine to power it's horrifyingly realistic graphics. Because of that, the game was made more eerie and frightening. One of the interesting innovations of the game was that no two plays through a mission could ever be the same. Depending on how a player did, greater or fewer numbers of zombies could be sent in to catch the player and his team. That meant that if someone was too good at the game, they would be flooded with zombies, and if someone was not so good, they would have a slightly easier time surviving. Like all of the games on the 2008 list, "Left 4 Dead" also received very high scores from it's reviewers.

It was given a 9.5/10 from "X-Box Magazine", and a 5/5 from "X-Play".

It also won numerous gaming awards such as "Best Multiplayer Game" and "Best Computer Game of the Year" from sources such as "Spike TV" and even the respected "Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences". One of the most exciting games of 2008 for sure.
5. One of the most successful games that helped sell the originally troubled Playstation 3 system was a game about the fall of man. It's 2008 sequel continued through the eyes of Nathan Hale, the game's first hero. Battling the Chimera would be as much of a challenge as in the first game, but the powerful weaponry given to the player would be enough to get them through the adventure. What Playstation 3 exclusive game was this?

Answer: Resistance 2

"Resistance 2" did not change it's tried and true first-person shooting formula too much. Developed by Insomniac Games, the game took the player through several gorgeous and literally infected locales to try and destroy the evil Chimera. Chimera was a virus in the game that transformed many of the world's people into beasts. Even the player was infected by the virus, but they had tools to repress the virus. Like the original game, "Resistance 2" also received very solid scores from it's critics. It was given a 9.5/10 by "IGN", a 9/10 by "Eurogamer", and a 5/5 by TV's "X-Play".
6. Unusual, fun and quirky would be three words used to describe this game released exclusively for the PS3 in 2008. The game was essentially a puzzle based platformer game where the player had to jump through elaborately designed courses using one of their twisted looking custom characters. Players could even team up with friends online to get through levels. One of the other hooks of the game was the ability for the user to make their own levels and upload them to the Playstation Network for all to play. What small, yet somehow large, game was this?

Answer: LittleBigPlanet

Developed by a small company called "Media Molecule", "LittleBigPlanet" was a very refreshing take on the tired puzzle-platformer genre. With the amazing physics engine it boasted, and the hardware to use it in the Playstation 3, "LittleBigPlanet" was literally transformed into one of the greatest games of the year.

It was also one of the most unique gaming ideas that translated well into the gaming world. The ability for multiplayer physics based teamwork added something special not yet seen in platform games before it.

The user-created levels also added thousands of hours of extra gameplay to the game. Believe me when I say some of the user created levels were so epic, even the game designers themselves would not have been able to match them. "LittleBigPlanet" was given "Game of the Year" honors by reputable game reviewers such as "GamePro", and "Eurogamer".
7. Konami's infamous stealth game made it's return in 2008 on the Playstation 3 console. In the game, the series' famed protagonist, Snake, had grown old due to some cloning problems and he had also become unhealthy from his constant cigarette smoking. What 'solid' game was this?

Answer: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

"MGS4" was the very first incarnation of the infamous stealth-action game on the next generation gaming consoles. "MGS4" took place five years after the events of "Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty". In the game Snake's job was to stop the constant fighting in the world by defeating Ocelot and shutting down a network that ran all of the super-soldiers trained to fight the world's army's.

Many of the familiar characters made a return in the game, including Ocelot, Otacon, Snake, Vamp, and everyone's "favorite" character, Raiden.

The graphics were jaw-dropping and the gameplay was once again slow-paced, but somehow satisfying. Hideo Kojima and his crew truly outdid themselves as the game went on to receive perfect reviews from critics such as "Game Informer", "X-Play", "Famitsu", "Gamespot", "Gamepro", "IGN", "Official Playstation Magazine", as well as thousands of loyal gamers throughout the world.
8. There's just something about fighting games. Either they are great, or they are terrible. Luckily, this weapon-based fighting game, the fifth in the series, was a great game. Featuring it's unique weapon-based combat, the game continued the fighting adventures of it's armed and dangerous characters. The game even had Yoda and Darth Vader as unlockable characters. Playstation 3 owners got to play as Vader while X-Box 360 owners got to play as Yoda. What fighting game was this?

Answer: Soul Calibur IV

Before "Soul Calibur", there was a game called "Soul Blade". That was the first game in the series. After "Soul Blade" came "Soul Calibur". As a result, "Soul Calibur IV" was the fifth game in the series. "Soul Calibur IV" featured all of the popular gameplay mechanics seen in previous iterations of the franchise.

As usual, the intense weapon-based combat was maintained to create a more complete gaming experience. The game also had it's custom character creation revamped to include more customization options than ever, and it included a special "Tower of Lost Souls" mini-mode, where the player could fight in almost endless competition and win new rewards such as upgrades for their characters and new customization options in the character creator. Because so few 3-dimensional fighting games are released every year, "Soul Calibur IV" was a shoe-in for the title of "Best Fighting Game" from such critics as "IGN" and "Spike TV".
9. First there was "Guitar Hero", then came "Rock Band" with it's complete musical band feel. The company that started it with only a guitar then decided to compete with "Rock Band" and make a new iteration of it's franchise to incorporate multiple instruments, as well. What was the name of the game?

Answer: Guitar Hero: World Tour

Released for every major system, such as the PC, PS3, PS2, X-Box 360, and Wii, "Guitar Hero: World Tour" went with the times and added in all of the instruments that "Rock Band" had and more. Players could be the guitarist, the bass guitarist, the vocalist, or the drummer.

While the game did not add much new to the music genre, the addition of the instruments and "Guitar Hero's" much more friendly user-interface made it slightly better than "Rock Band", in my opinion. Critics also liked the game, giving it solid reviews that averaged in the 80-90 percentile range.
10. What would it be like if you had all of the the powers of the force and you were unleashed on the unwitting enemy horde? This game answered that question, by letting the player do just that. Playing as Darth Vader's apprentice, the player could unleash everything in the force's arsenal through several fast-paced hours of third-person mayhem. What Lucasarts game was this?

Answer: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

"Star Wars: The Force Unleashed" was released on every single platform, including the handhelds. A PC version was also scheduled for released in 2009. At the end of 2008, "Star Wars: The Force Unleashed" had the honor of being the fastest selling "Star Wars" game ever made, beating "Star Wars: Battlefront 2".

In the game, the player had almost any force power at their disposal. The powers included classics such as the lightsaber throw and electricity. Other powers included telekinesis, and force choke. Combinations of the powers could get the player more points.

The story was solid, but the gameplay was where the game shone brightest. Fans liked it, but critics did not like it as much as some of the other top games in 2008. Reviews of the game averaged in the 70 percentiles with some high-scoring outliers from critics like "Game Informer" and "Official Nintendo Magazine".

They averaged scores of 8.5 out of 10 and 82% respectively.
