Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The setting is the planet Azeroth. You can choose to be either a part of the Alliance (humans or dwarves), or part of the Horde (orcs or trolls). Which MMORPG is this?

Answer: World of Warcraft

The "Warcraft" franchise began as an RTS (Real-Time Strategy) game in 1994 with "Warcraft: Orcs & Humans", created by Glenn Stafford, Gregory Alper, Rick Jackson, Chris Palmer through Blizzard Entertainment and Interplay Entertainment.

As a player you can enter one of four realms:
-Normal (player vs. environment) - completing quests, fighting monsters, etc.
-PvP (player vs. player) - completing quests, fighting monsters, AND competing with other players
-RP (role-play) - a variant of PvE where players role-play in character
-RP-PvP - as above, but interacting with other players

"World of Warcraft" is the fourth release in the franchise, coming out in 2004. The storyline continues four years after the events of "Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne". In nine years after the "WoW" release, several expansions have also been released to accompany the game: "The Burning Crusade" (2007), "Wrath of the Lich King" (2008), "Cataclysm" (2010), and "Mists of Pandaria" (2012).
2. If I am playing a game that involves a journey to the medieval fantasy world of Gielinor and find myself battling dragons and wizards, which of the following games would I be playing?

Answer: RuneScape

I would be enjoying the popular fantasy game of "RuneScape". This online role-playing game was first released in 2001 and uses Java and HTML5 platforms. It involves the use of magic spells and medieval weapons in a battle for power over different kingdoms, regions, and cities. Players are able to interact with each other by trading, participating in mini-games and by chatting.
3. In 2005, Joymax Co Ltd created an online game featuring a famous trade route from 7 AD. What is the name of this game?

Answer: Silkroad Online

Joymax Co Ltd created "Silkroad Online" in 2005. In this game you can choose to play as either a trader, thief or hunter. In that role you embark on various quests. With the famous Silk Road as background, everyone's adventure is supposed to be a different one, adding to the mystery that the real Silk Road holds for many.

The Silk Road was a famous trade route, leading for about 4000 miles over various roads through large parts of Asia. It gets its name from Chinese silk traders. The trade route was instrumental in the development of many civilizations on the Asian continent.
4. This long-running franchise of games was created by Hironobu Sakaguchi in 1987. Each release has been an independent story, with the fourteenth out in 2013: "A Realm Reborn". What is the name of the franchise?

Answer: Final Fantasy

While most of the "Final Fantasy" releases have been independent stories, there are often crossovers of characters and plots. Most of the stories involve a group of characters battling some evil that has control of the game world. Sometimes there are two villains, with someone not who they appear to be (the main villain actually turns out to be subservient to someone else).

Another recurring theme in the stories are magical orbs and crystals, where they are linked to the planet's life force.
5. Which of the following is a multi-player online role-playing game in which you would find an antagonist known as the Black Mage?

Answer: Maplestory

Developed in South Korea in 2003, "Maplestory" is an online role-playing game popular around the world. Although you may play the game for free, to get some of the characters and other game enhancements you must buy them with cash. This game involves improving your fighting skills while battling various monsters.

This game features chatting, trading, and playing minigames. It also features an option that allows different players to band together into guilds allowing them to interact easily. There are different versions of this game that are made for specific countries or geographic regions.

The Black Mage is found in all versions and is depicted as an evil character that had been resurrected and was responsible for a large cataclysm in Maple World. Players attempt to battle Black Mage and his followers, and attempt to gain status by gaining a new profession.
6. This online game will put the player in a team of champions to do battle against other teams. Our aim is to destroy the other team's nexus. What game is this?

Answer: League of Legends

The game "League of Legends" was created by Riot Games in 2009. To make it in this game you will have to have prowess on the battlefield. You will choose a champion and form a team to battle another team of champions. The ultimate goal is to destroy the nexus of the other team.

This nexus continuously generates warriors known as minions; smaller fighters that attack other teams, controlled by the system. There are also turrets, that release powerful energy and inhibitors that will give you super minions, when destroyed.

There are various champions to choose from all with different qualities.
7. Which online game, that is no longer in service, featured these four races: Humans, Sylphs, Shuras and Sprites?

Answer: Dream of Mirror Online

Released in 2005, "Dream of Mirror Online" was an anime-style game with various themes based on Chinese mythology. The title is a reference to an artifact in the game known as the Kunlun Mirror, which has the ability to make copies of the real world and to record everything that exists in these worlds.

A flaw in the mirror results in things changing when reflected by the mirror. A simple character may become a monster when reflected into the mirror world. The game featured Humans who are friendly characters with no special powers, Sylphs who are best described as wise spirit-like creatures, Shuras who are the monsters of the game and lastly, the Sprites who are small magical creatures.

As of late 2012, this game was no longer in service.
8. In 2003 an online game was released, intended as a prequel to the original game. You choose your character in a medieval world and then commence in battle with various monsters to gain experience and skill. What is the name of this game?

Answer: Lineage II

"Lineage II" was released in 2003 as a prequel to the original game. This game is set 150 years before the first one, in medieval times. To start the game you will have to choose a character, choosing the race (human, dwarf, orc, elf, dark elf or kamael) and class. You will have to decide to be either a fighter or a mystic, which largely influences the path your character follows and what he can become. Through combat and interaction with other players, you will gain skills and equipment.
9. "Eve Online" is the first online MMORPG to be centered around the Bible.

Answer: False

"Eve Online" is a science fiction style online game. It has no biblical theme and involves piloting customizable space ships through a fictional galaxy of over 7,000 star systems. The game features asteroid belts, wormholes, moons and planets, as well as man-made space complexes. Players can engage in many space professions such as piracy, trading, combat, mining and manufacturing.

This is one of the few MMORPGs to allow stealing from other players, as well as other forms of griefing not found in many games.
10. This free online game asks you to take on the role of a hero to save the world of fantasy world of Tyria. You can choose to be a Warrior, Monk, Elementalist, Ranger, Necromancer or Mesmer as your core choices of profession. Which game?
