Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what classic game would you hear the main boss villain taunt you with such phrases as: "Run, coward!" and "I hunger!"?

Answer: 'Sinistar'

In the game you flew a little ship around trying to mine crystals from an asteroid belt to make "Sinibombs", the only weapon effective against the boss, Sinistar. If his drones were able to construct Sinistar out of the crystals (they would steal them and run away) before you had enough bombs to handle him, you were usually toast.
2. What classic Atari coin-op used vector graphics to create a 3D environment in which you drove a tank and tried to destroy other Tanks, Supertanks, Missiles, and Saucers?

Answer: 'Battlezone'

This was a game that was truly before its time, made at a point when 3D environments were few and far between. It was particularly well implemented, and worth the quarter.
3. In 'Pac-Man', the ghosts chasing you were Inky, Pinky, Blinky, and Clyde. In 'Ms. Pac-Man', Clyde was replaced by:

Answer: Sue

Ah, that oh-so-slow but cunning she-ghost! What good times we had...
4. What was the name of the first coin-op that was a major hit? (So much so that the creator made enough money to found Atari!)

Answer: 'Pong'

The creator's name was Bushnell. Legend has it that he had to visit the bar in which he'd installed the first 'Pong' machine three times a day because the coin box would overflow so quickly.
5. In what classic side-scroller did the player drive a vehicle across the lunar surface while jumping pits, and shooting boulders and pesky spacecraft?

Answer: 'Moon Patrol'

In 'Moon Patrol' you were timed from checkpoint to checkpoint, and received bonuses for remaining time and record speeds.
6. What entertaining Nintendo coin-op featured characters named Kid Quick, Bald Bull, and Glass Joe?

Answer: 'Punch Out'

"HONK! HONK! HONK! Greaaat fighting! You're an up-and-coming boxer!"
7. A series of classic shooting games in which you actually held your weapon and aimed at targets on the screen had two hits in the eighties with 'Crossbow' and 'Cheyenne'. What other two not-so-successful games rounded out the series?

Answer: 'Crackshot' & 'Chiller'

'Chiller' was a very gory game with a torture chamber, a graveyard, and a haunted hallway. 'Crackshot' was a general target game with themed boards based on things like deer hunting, cops and robbers, and varmint plinking. 'Crossbow' was fantasy oriented, and 'Cheyenne' was a western. Both 'Chiller' and 'Crackshot' were sadly underrated. Curiously, all four games managed to use the same limited set of ROM samples that made their sound effects unique as a family.
8. This Williams Megahit was a game fit for an octopus, utilizing a joystick and 5 distinct buttons. You flew a fighter over a planetary surface defending guys wandering below from ravenous aliens.

Answer: 'Defender'

At first Williams did not want to release this game, as the controls seemed too complex for the gaming market. They gambled, and won.
9. This one is a bit more obscure. What was the sequel to 'Defender' which was built on the same theme, but added more enemies, and still another button, "Inviso", for a grand total of six buttons?

Answer: 'Stargate'

Emboldened by their success with 'Defender', Williams gambled again by adding another button control. Although 'Stargate' made money, it was far less successful than its predecessor. Williams had discovered the upper limit for coin-op controls, and to my knowledge no other games matched 6 buttons and a joystick until the advent of the fighting game 'Street Fighter II'.

At least with 'SF2' and other later games, the buttons make sense (Jab, Punch, Hard Punch for example.) With 'Stargate', all of the buttons were unrelated.
10. What was the sequel to the venerable Atari classic 'Asteroids', adding a shield to the player's defensive arsenal, and rotation to the asteroids?

Answer: 'Asteroids Deluxe'

Another successful sequel, but not nearly as much so as the original. An awesome game nonetheless, from an era when the player needed tremendous twitch speed and endurance to succeed.
11. What was the Midway arcade game in which a side to side shooter behind bunkers defended the lunar surface from advancing ranks of aliens?

Answer: 'Space Invaders'

Perhaps THE classic coin-op of all time. This game probably spawned more imitators than any other, and although some of them were cool in their own right, none captured the character of the original 'Space Invaders'.
12. This could be a tough one for some, you're showing your age or your intuition if you get it. In what old black-and-white game did you fire a rifle at ducks in flight over tall grass painted on the console?

Answer: 'Qwak!'

'QWAK!' had a cameo in the mall arcade scene in the classic George Romero horror film "Dawn of the Dead".
13. What blockbuster puzzle game that is still quite addictive was coded by Russian Programmers and featured a score that sounds like Russian folk music?

Answer: 'Tetris'

'Tetris' was another groundbreaker that spawned a host of imitators. It was completely innovative, and is still quite addictive. You can almost certainly find a freeware or shareware version on the web if you want to find out for yourself.
14. What object, also a prize to munch on the board, marked the highest levels of 'Pac-Man'? (It was simply repeated over and over again as you finished subsequent boards).

Answer: Key

"I've got all the patterns down, up until the ninth key! I've got Speedy on my tail and I know it's either him or me. I've got a callous on my finger and my shoulder's hurtin' too! I'm gonna eat 'em all up just as soon as they turn blue." - Excerpt from the thematic 80's comic classic song, "Pac-Man Fever"
15. What little-known Exidy coin-op featured a bow-toting character named "Winky", who searched for treasure in a dungeon full of such enemies as skeletons, snakes, moving walls, and ghosts?

Answer: 'Venture'

This was one of my favorite games, and I would "venture" far and wide as a preteen to find it. Long live Winky! Thanks for playing my quiz!
