Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are four different modes of play in the game "Zoocube". In the classic mode, players must use the Zoocube to restore animals back to their original shapes. The animals are deformed because an evil doctor mutated them in his cross-species testing. What is the name of the crazy doctor whose work you must destroy?

Answer: Dr. Ooze

Although this storyline appears very interesting at first, once you start playing the game you'll forget the whole storyline and just concentrate on completing the addictive puzzles. Your character travels around the Earth, on the Ark (a carrier ship), attempting to rehabilitate Dr. Ooze's creations.
2. Similar to most other puzzlers, the basic gameplay of "Zoocube" is simple. How does a player restore an animal back to its original form?

Answer: Align an incoming animal shape with a similar animal shape already on the Zoocube.

Most of the animal shapes are easily distinguishable from the others, but there a large quantity of them (thirty-six animals in total). If an incoming animal shape is placed on a dissimilar shape, the shapes will stack up on that side of the Zoocube.
3. What animation occurs when an animal is restored back to its original form?

Answer: The animal appears at the top of the screen and it makes its signature noise (i. e. a lion roars).

The animations, like in many games, are novel and fun at first but they get old and annoying very quickly. Make sure that you don't have the volume too loud as others may be disturbed by the sound of elephants trumpeting or hyenas laughing.
4. What is the first level of the game in the Classic Mode?

Answer: China Sea

The levels progress in difficulty and in the amount of points that you can obtain. The levels are all named after large bodies of water on the Earth and they include the China Sea, Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Arctic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean.
5. The Zoocube can be rotated to assist players in restoring animals to their original shapes. On the first four levels of the Classic Mode, from how many different directions do incoming shapes collide with the Zoocube?

Answer: Three

On the first four levels, shapes come from the top-center, bottom-left, and bottom-right of the screen. A very helpful feature incorporated in the game are icons that show what the next shape will be sent from that direction. This allows players to strategically stack shapes and rotate the Zoocube to the proper position before the shape has been sent.
6. When an incoming animal shape is traveling toward the Zoocube, what happens if the player presses the A button?

Answer: The shape will "lock-on" and accelerate to the side of the Zoocube that it is heading toward.

The lock-on feature in the game works very well and its use is essential in completing the more difficult levels. Even if you rotate the Zoocube after accelerating a shape, the shape will remain locked on to the side that it was traveling to when it was accelerated. Accelerating shapes also double the points received for matching up animal shapes.
7. Each level in the game of "Zoocube" is made up of a number of stages that must be completed in order to progress in the game. The stages are all-inclusive in that if played optimally, all incoming animal shapes can eventually be matched and the Zoocube can be empty when progressing to the next stage. What happens if a player is able to match all animal shapes on even numbered stages of levels?

Answer: A Bonus Level is awarded.

The bonus levels function similar to the Knockout style of gameplay in that shapes already on the Zoocube must be matched and cleared to beat the level. If a player does not receive a Bonus Level, the next odd numbered stage will appear as normal, but the shapes that were not matched properly in the previous stage will eventually appear in the stage to allow the player to clear the Zoocube.
8. When an animal is restored to its natural shape, a goodie is placed on that side of the Zoocube. Which animal releases the Yellow Ice Cream goodie when matched?

Answer: Cow

Some animal goodies reward points while others give players special power ups. The yellow ice cream cone released by the restored cow will give the player a 150 point bonus.
9. The way that a player lost the in the game of "Zoocube" is very similar to other puzzle games like "Tetris". How does a player lose in a game of "Zoocube"?

Answer: Too many shapes are stacked on one side of the Zoocube.

In the Classic Mode (on the standard difficulty), any side with five shapes stacked will turn gray. If an incoming shape collides with a side with gray shapes, the game is over.
10. The game of "Zoocube" was jointly developed by PuzzleKings and Coyote Development. What major gaming company published this game for the Nintendo Gamecube?

Answer: Acclaim

Acclaim released this puzzler in the United States on June 4, 2002. While the game was hailed as an innovative take on the puzzle genre, critics generally felt that it was not as addictive as other puzzle games like "Tetris" and "Puyo Puyo". However, I would have to disagree as I believe that "Zoocube" was an extremely addictive game that deserves more recognition and acclaim (no pun intended).
