Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After completing twenty-six postures in my Bikram Yoga class, our Yogini, who speaks Hindi, says goodbye to us with the word "Namaste". From which country does my Yogini most likely come?

Answer: India

"Namaste" is my Yogini's spiritual goodbye to her class which she says while bowing and having her hands in a prayer position. Her form of goodbye means "I bow to the divine in you". When "namaste" is used in many Southeastern Asian countries, it can mean "Hello" or "Goodbye". Because it is a divine form of goodbye, my Yogini would most likely not use the casual goodbye of "Jaldee milengae" (see you soon"), or "Phir milengae" (see you again).
"Namaste is from Sanskrit and originated in India.
2. In one couplet within the lyrics of the song "Farewell, So Long", the words for "goodbye", "auf wiedersehen" and "adieu adieu" are sung. In which country is "auf wiedersehen" a way of saying a formal "goodbye"?

Answer: Germany

"Auf Wiedersehen" is the more formal way of saying goodbye in Germany.
In the song from the movie "The Sound of Music", the lyrics in one couplet sung by the children are "So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye, adieu
adieu, to you and you and you".
"Bis baldi" (bye for now) and "Machs gut" (take care) are the informal expressions of "goodbye" in Germany. Understandably not quite as fitting for the lyrics of this sweetly sung song.
3. In which southern European country would the word "Adeus" be used as a formal word for goodbye?

Answer: Portugal

The word "Adeus" is an expression of goodbye in Portugal. "Adeus" is also used to say goodbye in Brazil, but it is used less frequently since it denotes the parting may be forever or at least a very long time. The literal translation of the word "adeus" is "to God". Since "Adeus" as goodbye may convey longevity in parting, the everyday goodbye in Portugal is usually said "Tchau" or even the more casual "Até mais" (see you later).

These forms of goodbye may be used in other"Portuguese." speaking places such as Angola, Mozambique, and Cape Verde.
4. In my international online bridge club, my favorite partner, Fisker, is from one of the Scandinavian countries. When we finish our game he writes on the chat line "Harde bra" to say goodbye. By the use of the expression "Harde bra", from which country is my friend Fisker?

Answer: Norway

My international bridge club partner Fisker is from Norway. One of the advantages in belonging to this club is the ability to "talk" on a chat line. If one is interested in learning some common expressions in another language an added dimension to playing on this site is available.

When we finish our bridge rounds Fisker usually types on the chat line "harde bra" to say goodbye. He is unlikely to use the more formal "Farvel" for goodbye. When we are going to play again later that day Fisker will write on the chat line "Vi sees", which is Norwegian for "see you later", or "Vi snakkes" for "talk to you later."
5. From which country is "ciao" a more familiar form of goodbye?

Answer: Italy

Adopted by some people of other countries as a short, friendly word for goodbye, "ciao" is a word for goodbye in Italy. "Ciao" has been used as a title of a song which some may know "Ciao, Ciao, Bambina" which translates to "Bye Bye Baby". Other Italian casual forms of goodbye are: "Stammi bene, (take care) and "Ci vediamo" (see ya).
6. In many Western/Cowboy movies, the expression "Adios Amigo" (goodbye friend) is heard. From which North American country is" Adios" a word for goodbye?

Answer: Mexico

In the North American Spanish speaking country of Mexico, "Adios" is a familiar word for goodbye. Other familiar forms of goodbye in the Spanish language are, "hasta mañana" meaning "see you tomorrow" or "hasta luego" meaning "see you later". The actor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, in the film "Terminator 2" popularized "Hasta la vista" which means "until I see you".

The movie "Terminator 2" was neither a Western/Cowboy or an original Spanish speaking film.
7. "Au revoir bonne" is "goodbye and all the best" in which country, whose capital is located on the Seine River?

Answer: France

Other forms of "goodbye" used in France are "a plus tarde", "a bientot" and "a la prochaine", all these forms of "goodbye" are used to mean "until we meet again". In 1987 Louis Malle directed the movie "Au Revoir Mes Enfants", a World War II movie based on his experience at a French boarding school. Translated to "Goodbye My Children", the movie says goodbye to childhood when faced with the ravages of war.
8. This Lowland European country has three official languages; French, Dutch and German, with a modified or colloquial form of the Dutch language known as Flemish. In which country is "tot ziens" Flemish for "goodbye" spoken?

Answer: Belgium

Although Belgium has three official languages, French, Dutch, and German, there are regions of Belgium where one or another of the three languages are spoken. In the capital city of Brussels, the French form of "Adieu" (goodbye), might often be heard. In the north of Belgium, goodbye might be the more popular "tot ziens", or the casual forms of Flemish goodbye "tot binnekort" (see you later), or "tot de volgende keer" (until next time).

German is the official language of Liechtenstein, Magyar is the official language of Hungary, and Switzerland does have four official languages, which are Italian, German, and French, and sometimes Romansch is included, differentiating it from Belgium.
9. In Asian countries there are many different forms of goodbye. From which country is "Sayonara" a formal word for "goodbye"?

Answer: Japan

In Japan, "Sayonara", which conveys "will not see you for a while" is a more formal goodbye. To say goodbye to a close friend one might use the casual, "Ja ne".

Goodbye in Tibetan language is "Chagpo nang" (take care) and in Vietnamese
"Tam biet". In the language of Bangladesh "duno bad" which is extremely formal or "aabar dikha hobey" meaning "we will meet again".
10. On which island is "a hui hou" a form of goodbye?

Answer: Hawaii

Another form of goodbye less well known than the popular "Aloha" in the Hawaiian language is "a hui hou" or "a hui kaua". The first form is how you might say, "Goodbye, until we meet again". The second form "a hui kaua" means "until we meet again dear". "Aloha" can be used for hello, goodbye or I love you. "Maeva/manava" means "welcome to our land" on the island of Tahiti. In the former French colony of Madagascar, the French, "au revoir" is used for goodbye.
