Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This bridge lies in a southern state of the U.S. and is known as both the "Overseas Highway" and what other name?

Answer: Seven Mile Bridge, Florida

This bridge runs over the channel between the Florida Strait and the Gulf of Mexico. It connects Little Duck Key in the lower keys to Key Vaca in the middle keys. This is the only road from the keys to the mainland, so in cases of evacuation it is KEY.

It is built to withstand hurricane winds. These seven miles make a very scenic route, although scary at times when it crosses long stretches of water. The bridge was completed in 1982 at a cost of $45 million. Any phobias about height, water, open or closed spaces might deter you from using it.
2. This is one of the world's tallest vehicular bridges, 1125 feet above the Tarn Valley, in southern France. What is its name?

Answer: Millau Bridge

A bit taller than the Eiffel Tower, this bridge is often surrounded by fog or mist, making it look like a futuristic floating road with several high towers. If you look way way down you will see the Tarn river and valley, while driving across over 8,000 feet of its expanse. The bridge opened in 2004.
3. In the early 21st century, which span was considered one of the highest suspension bridges in the world, measuring from the roadbed to the ground below?

Answer: Royal Gorge Bridge, U.S.

From a distance, and there's nothing out here but long distance, this Colorado bridge looks like a thin silver wire connecting two rocky tors. The roadbed is over 1050 feet above the ground, and is 1270 feet long. You can cross by car or on foot. This bridge was built in 1929 for about $350,000, which would translate to about $15,000,000. or more now. Until 1982 it had no stabilizing wind cables. It weighs about 1500 tons and requires frequent repair and maintenance. The other three are shaky, narrow, high and dangerous rope/net/wire/steel cable/plank types.
4. This may be one of the most dangerous bridges to cross, which can only be done on foot. Picture the debris of your house after a hurricane - that's what the planks are made of. Where is this thrill seeker's crossing?

Answer: Borit Lake, Pakistan

It's called the Hussaini-Borit Lake Bridge, and is a handmade single-file pedestrian crossing used regularly for access to the larger cities in northern Pakistan. It's made primarily of wire, old plank pieces, rope and hope. It looks like something out of an old Tarzan film, and regularly needs repairs.

This engineering marvel has no girders, towers, suspension system or anything modern. It is also very narrow, high above the lake, and swings in the wind. The previous bridge next to it does not appear to be in operation as almost all the planks are missing. You do NOT want to bring your elephant across here! There are many of these handmade bridges around the world, such as the Monkey Bridges in Vietnam, over the Mekong, usually made of a bamboo log and one handrail.

They are so-called because you have to stoop over like a monkey to cross safely.
5. The Aiguille du Midi at Mont Blanc Mountain, France, is one of the longest bridges in the world. True or False?

Answer: False

Actually it's a small and very short footbridge. But it is breathtakingly high, connecting two mountains, and close to 12,000 feet up. It is wide though and many people cross it to take in the view of the mountains. To get up there you take a cable car that ascends 9,200 feet vertically in 20 minutes. There is an observation deck as well.
6. The bridge to Russky Island was built to survive extremes of weather. True or False?

Answer: True

This bridge, opened in 2012, connects Vladivostok across the Eastern Bosphorus Strait to Russky Island. In this area of the world, there is some extreme weather, storm winds, high waves and chilling temperatures. The bridge has replaceable portions of cable that are woven with up to 30 thicknesses of galvanized strands of seven wires.

It offers the best protection that 21st century technology can provide in this northern Pacific environment.
7. In the U.S. which east coast bridge spans Chesapeake Bay?

Answer: Chesapeake Bay Bridge

At 4.3 miles long, this Maryland bridge scares many drivers since it is in a storm area. Visibility is poor during the frequent and violent storms, and it's 360 feet to the water down below. It connects the eastern and western shores. The eastern span was finished in 1952, and the western in 1973; there are 5 lanes, 2 east, 2 west, and one flew over the cuckoo's nest...reversible, that is. This bridge is not to be confused with the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel which opened its southbound lane in 1964 and northbound in 1999.

This is a 23 mile long bridge in Virginia that crosses the Delmarva peninsula {Delaware/Maryland/Virginia}, and has 4 lanes on bridges and 2 lanes in tunnels. It also has 4 artificial islands.
8. The Huey P. Long Bridge in Jefferson Parish, LA, once had 9 foot wide vehicle traffic lanes with no shoulders. True or False?

Answer: True

This is a 4 mile long cantilevered steel through truss style of bridge. It has a two track railroad line besides motorists lanes that were widened from 9 feet to 11 feet in 2006; it was also given shoulders then. Originally opened in 1935, this was the bane of commuters as it shook and rattled, and passing was perilous. About 43,000 vehicles cross every day, as it is also route 90.

The Huey P. Long Bridge was the 29th bridge crossing the Mississippi River, counting from north to south. This bridge required massive pillars to maintain its strength. I drove over it once by mistake in 1978, and, rather than drive back over, I went out of my way over to the Miss. River Bridge to cross back.
9. Which bridge in China was the longest cross-sea bridge in the world in 2011?

Answer: Donghai Bridge

It was also the longest bridge in Asia. It was completed in 2005 and spans 20+ miles. The Donghai connects Shanghai and Yangshan, an offshore deep-water port in China. Most of the span is a low-level viaduct, and the bridge has cable-stayed sections that allow large ships to pass through.

There has been talk of constructing a Bering Strait Rail and Tunnel Bridge, a united effort between Russia, China, the U.S. and India, which will connect North America to Eastern Asia, possibly stopping at Diomede Islands midway. If this occurs it will be an enormous undertaking and cost billions.
10. In Louisiana, USA, this is one of the longest of the cable stayed bridges. Where would you find it?

Answer: Lake Pontchartrain Causeway

This is actually two bridges, the longer one being almost 24 miles long. Lake Pontchartrain is an enormous lake and even on a clear day the opposite shore is usually not visible. The bridges are supported by over 9,000 concrete pilings, and the drive can be frightening because you can see the water on either side and it may seem too close for comfort. I crossed it once - because it was there - and back again.

This causeway connects Mandeville in the north to Metairie in the south. It saves a lot of time for commuters rather than driving around the lake and its levees.
