Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The F-16 was chosen as one of the two final competitors for the LWF (lightweight fighter) contract. What was the other competing aircraft?

Answer: F-17

The Northrop F-17, which ultimately became the McDonnell Douglas F-18 (now Boeing F-18), lost out to the F-16. However, the two designs were again pitted against each other for a subsequent US Navy contract which the F-17 won.
2. General Dynamics, the company that designed the F-16, made a gamble to help boost its odds of winning the contract by doing what?

Answer: It began construction of the aircraft factory.

The factory location chosen was Fort Worth, Texas. The factory was one mile long.
3. Due to the aircraft's ability to dish out excessive g-forces, what was incorporated into the cockpit design to prevent pilots from becoming too affected by the g-forces?

Answer: 30 degree reclined seat

The reclined seat is one of many noteworthy characteristics of the design, and proved to assist pilots in maneuvering the plane without suffering from the g-forces involved. Other noteworthy cockpit characteristics include a bubble canopy offering a clear-all around view, and a side-mounted control stick to better maneuver the plane.
4. How many underwing hardpoints does the aircraft have?

Answer: 6

There are three under each wing, as well as wingtip launchers, and a single fuselage hardpoint.
5. Even though the United States is by far the largest F-16 customer, which nation's F-16s were in fact the first to engage in actual combat?

Answer: Israel

The mission involved using a mix of F-15A and F-16B aicraft meant to bomb an Iraqi powerplant. The F-15s were used as escorts while the F-16 models were used as tactical bombers. Along the way to Iraq the pilots used perfect Arabic dialogue to fly over Arabic airspace.
6. In 1975 the F-16 won "the deal of the century"... it was chosen by which of these four NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) allies as replacements for their elderly F-104 Starfighters?

Answer: Denmark, Belgium, Norway, the Netherlands

In 1974, an agreement was made by those four nations that they would consider the winner of the USAF Lightweight Fighter competition as their replacement for their elderly fighter planes. Local assembly was split between facilities in the Netherlands and Belgium.
7. Canada also considered purchasing the F-16 but eventually decided not to. Why not?

Answer: Because of less reliability of a single engine.

Due to the vast arctic territory in Canada's north, the Department of National Defense generally shies away from single engine aircraft due to the risk of the engine shutting down and not having a second one to get the pilot back safely. Oddly enough, Canada ended up buying the F-18, which lost to the F-16 in the USAF competition in the first place.
8. Over the course of its operational lifetime the F-16 has been adapted to meet several different roles. Which of the following is *not* a role the USAF uses or used the aircraft for?

Answer: Maritime patrol

Although originally conceived as a "no frills" fighter, the F-16 has grown into a multi-role workhorse and has expanded into other roles. Supplementing or replacing other aircraft in the process, such as the F-4 (wild weasel) and A-10 (tactical attack), and operating in a reconnaissance role by having camera pods attached to it.
9. The F-16 was chosen as the aircraft to be used by which military acrobatic team?

Answer: Thunderbirds

The F-16 was the plane chosen by the USAF Thunderbirds acrobatic team and continues to be used in that role to the day.
10. To accommodate the second seat in the cockpit, what major design change was incorporated into the F-16B model?

Answer: Less fuel storage

Aside from losing approximately 20% of fuel storage capacity the B (and all two-seat models) model retains full operational abilities in addition to its training role.
11. What is the top speed of the F-16?

Answer: Mach 2.0

The F-16 can reach twice the speed of sound (Mach 2.0). Its engine is the same engine that is used in the F-15 Eagle.
12. Due to mergers and company acquisitions, which company now has ownership of the F-16?

Answer: Lockheed Martin

Originally designed and manufactured by General Dynamics, the aircraft division of the company got sold to Lockheed Martin, which continues to manufacture and promote it.
13. Which of the following is *not* a customer of any version of the F-16?

Answer: India

A version of the F-16 was considered for the Indian Air Force but ultimately it was not chosen. Outside of the USA the F-16 is used by 25 nations.
14. What is a popular nickname of the F-16?

Answer: Viper

It is commonly referred to as the Viper because of its menacing shape as well as its resemblance to a ship design in the "Battlestar Galactica" TV universe.
15. Which specially designed version of the F-16 competed with, but ultimately lost to the F-15E for a USAF contract?

Answer: F-16XL

The F-16XL, if selected for production, would've been called the F-16E (single seater) and F-16F (two-seater). The aircraft had a unique wing design that had room for 17 hardpoints and the manufacturer claimed it had a far better endurance.
