Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Local Self-Government is an important feature of Indian Government. By what name are such institutions known in the metropolitan cities?

Answer: Municipalities/Municipal Corporations

The Self-Government institutions in metropolitan cities, or cities having a population over one lakh, are known as Municipalities or Municipal Corporations. The Self-Government institutions in smaller urban areas are called Municipal Councils and those situated in areas in transition from rural to urban are called Nagar Panchayats.
2. Some power can be achieved if you are head of the Local Self-Government institution in an Indian metropolitan city. By what name will you be called then?

Answer: Mayor

The head of a Municipal Corporation is known as the Mayor. The head of Panchayats (rural Self-Government) is known as the Sarpanch. Neither Sheriff nor Allotter is the name of any government posts in India.
3. Perhaps you would not be content with power over just a city? Suppose you join a political party next. Which political party among the following is an All India Party, and could help you gain nationwide power?

Answer: Congress

Congress is the only All India Party among the parties mentioned. It traces its origins to the Indian National Congress founded in 1885. It has the election symbol of the Hand. Telugu Desam operates in Andhra Pradesh, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in Tamil Nadu and Shiromoni Akali Dal operates in Punjab.
4. Okay, you have now joined a political party. But which body of Government in India decides that the group you have joined is a political party?

Answer: Election Commission

The Election Commission is an independent body, free from executive or legislative interference. Its members are appointed by the president. It prepares the Electoral Rolls, registers Political Parties, allots symbols to them and also makes sure that the election process is not sabotaged.
5. After joining the party, you get a nice symbol. Why are symbols allotted to political parties in India?

Answer: So that even the illiterate can recognise their candidate of choice

A large portion of Indian people are illiterate. To help them recognise the candidate of their choice, the Election Commission allots separate symbols to every political party on a first come, first serve basis. The symbols also help to avoid confusion in case of duplicate names of candidates.
6. Time for the real thing - elections. Which type of election is NOT held in India?

Answer: Decadial Election (after ten years)

In India, Decadial Elections are not held, but every five years General Elections are organised. By-Elections are held when an individual resigns before completion of his/her term or is unable to perform his duties. Mid-Term elections are held when the whole House of Government is dissolved for whatever reason.
7. You will need to impress a sufficient number of eligible voters to win an election. What is the minimum age for voting in India?

Answer: 18

The minimum age for an individual to possess voting rights in India is 18. Previously, the age used to be 21, but it was reduced by the sixty-first amendment act of the Indian Constitution.
8. By what process is voting done in official elections in India?

Answer: Secret Ballot

In India, voting is done by secret ballot. Either EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines) are used or people write the name of their candidate of choice in a piece of paper and drop it into a ballot box. The boxes are opened later and the votes are counted.
9. Okay, you got the votes. However, it would create confusion for the people who count the votes if votes from all over the country are chucked at them all at once. So the state/country is divided into fixed areas for ease of counting. What are these areas called?

Answer: Constituencies

The fixed areas are known as Constituencies. They are fixed mainly on the basis of population of an area. There are three types of constituencies: Single-Member Constituency, Multi-Member Constituency and Reserved Constituencies (for Scheduled Castes and Tribes).
10. Oops. After the counting of votes, you find that the number of votes obtained by your party is slightly less than the majority needed to win the election singly. What is the most sensible thing to do next so that you can achieve true power?

Answer: Join a regional party to form a coalition government

The best thing you can do is to find a friendly regional party and join it form a coalition government (you must see that the regional party has enough votes so that the total number of votes collectively is sufficient to win the election). You may not win the re-election, and don't even think of sabotaging votes - you'll be put in jail for that!
