Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Beginning at roughly 1 o'clock, inside the M25 at Woodford, the M11 runs north to which university city?

Answer: Cambridge

On its way northwards, the M11 passes by Stansted Airport, the third busiest of London's airports. Upon reaching Cambridge, it eases around the city to the west, past the various campuses of Cambridge University, before merging with the A14 which, in turn, connects up with the A1.
2. At Junction 29, which A road (whose digits add to an even number) heads off to the east, connecting the Greater London area to Essex's Southend-on-Sea?

Answer: A127

At Gallows Corner, near Romford in London, the A127 begins its eastward trek to the coast, intersecting the M25 at Junction 29 and coming to an end, around 24 miles later, just outside Southend Victoria train station. Major locations along the way include Basildon and London Southend Airport.
3. Despite being the same bit of road, the M25 changes into the A282 briefly as it crosses the River Thames near which location, which gives its name to the crossing?

Answer: Dartford

The Dartford Crossing refers to both the bridge and tunnels that respectively go over and under the Thames as it heads eastwards from central London out to the North Sea. The tunnels, which carry northbound traffic, are around 0.9 miles long, while the main section of the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge, which facilitates southbound traffic, is around 0.3 miles long.

The crossing opened with a single tunnel, but traffic demands necessitated the construction of a second and, later, a bridge. The Dartford Crossing, nowadays a free-flow toll road, still suffers from significant congestion and is one of the busiest sections of the London Orbital Motorway during peak hours.
4. Heading southeast from the M25, which motorway would lead you all the way to the Eurotunnel services in Folkestone, Kent?

Answer: M20

At Junction 3, the M20 branches off from the M25 and heads for the English Channel. Along the 50 mile motorway, you'll pass Brands Hatch Circuit, Leeds Castle and Ashford International station before arriving at the Eurotunnel station on the northeastern edge of Folkestone.

Despite the entry point being at Folkestone, the Eurotunnel continues underneath Kent and only begins to cross the Channel closer to Dover and the usual route taken by ferry services.
5. At 6 o'clock on the M25 clock, we cross under the M23, the major roadway leading to Brighton. Which major airport does the M23 pass on its journey down through Surrey and West Sussex?

Answer: Gatwick

The M23 starts a little bit inside the M25 and heads south past Gatwick Airport and Crawley before downgrading to the A23 at Pease Pottage. It then continues all the way down until it meets up with the A27 at the northern edge of the city of Brighton and Hove.
6. The M3 runs southwest through Surrey and Hampshire, joining up with the coastal M27 just outside which major seaside city?

Answer: Southampton

The M3 is the most southwesterly-reaching motorway from the M25, connecting London to Southampton over a distance just shy of 60 miles. It connects up with the M27, which runs from Portsmouth in the east and stops just past Southampton at Cadnam where it becomes the A31.

In terms of M roads, there isn't a whole lot any further west - a smattering of A roads will eventually reach the M5, which connects Exeter, Bristol and Birmingham.
7. Around 9 o'clock on the Orbital clock, the M4 winds its way westwards towards Wales. Which of these major towns is NOT on or very near the M4 between the M25 (at Junction 15) and Newport?

Answer: High Wycombe

The M4's humble beginnings in Chiswick see it running north of and parallel to Heathrow Airport before cutting across the M25 at Junction 15 and running through several English counties. Once it reaches Bristol, it skirts around it to the north, intersecting the M32, the M5 and the M48 as it does so and carrying on across the River Severn into Wales. From there, Newport, the outskirts of Cardiff and Swansea are all major Welsh destinations accessible from the M4.
8. On its way to the West Midlands from the M25, the M40 passes through three counties. Which of these is NOT one of those?

Answer: Berkshire

The M40 connects up with the M42 near Hockley Heath, after its near-90 mile trek from London through the Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire countryside. Birmingham has its own orbital road of sorts - parts of several different M roads, namely the M42, M5 and M6, connect to one another around the city.
9. The gateway to the north, the M1, runs for nearly 200 miles as it snakes its way through the English countryside towards Leeds. It begins inside the M25, near which area of London (which is also a station on the Northern Line of the Tube)?

Answer: Brent Cross

Many major locations can be found along the M1, including Luton, Milton Keynes, Northampton, Leicester, Nottingham and Sheffield. After reaching Leeds, the M1 joins up with the A1. As its name suggests, the M1 was the UK's first major motorway, though it wasn't the first to be designated as a motorway (that honour went to a section of road that is now the M6 near Preston).
10. At Junction 23, which upgraded A road intersects the M25, running north past Welwyn Garden City and Stevenage before reverting back to its A road designation near Stotfold?

Answer: A1 (M)

The A1, which chops and changes between its regular A designation and the upgraded A1 (M), connects London to Edinburgh and is far and away the longest road in the UK. Where the M1 stops at Leeds, the A1 passes it to the east and continues onwards towards Newcastle, following the coast of the UK before reaching Edinburgh.

The road as a whole forms part of the E15, a 2,300 mile European route between Algeciras in Spain and Inverness in Scotland.
