Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Iqaluit, the capital and largest city in the Canadian territory of Nunavut, is located on the southern shore of which island?

Answer: Baffin Island

Formerly named Frobisher Bay (which is also the name of the inlet on which it is stands), Iqaluit is located on the southern coast of Canada's largest island, Baffin Island, the fifth-largest island in the world. With an area of almost 196,000 square miles, Baffin Island is slightly larger than Spain. Only two U.S. states, Alaska and Texas, are larger.
2. The national flags of Angola, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Tuvalu and Vietnam all feature 5-pointed stars of what color?

Answer: Yellow

Vietnam is the simplest variation - a red flag with a central yellow star. Burkina Faso's flag has red and green horizontal strips with a yellow star. The Cape Verde flag actually has a ring of ten yellow stars. Other national flags that include a 5-pointed yellow star include China, Grenada, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Suriname and South Sudan. The flags of Burma, Chile, Libya, Micronesia, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, St Kitts Nevis and others all include white stars. Those of Djibouti, North Korea, New Zealand and Panama include one or more 5-pointed red stars, whilst Ghana and Guinea-Bissau have a black star.
3. Águila Islet, part of the Diego Ramirez Islands located in Drake Passage, is the southernmost point of which country?

Answer: Chile

Located 60 miles southwest of Cape Horn and 500 miles north of the Antarctic mainland, Águila Islet is the southernmost point of Chile. This is a remarkable 2,653 miles south of that country's northernmost point. The island also forms the boundary between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
4. Which English city lies further from the coast than any other?

Answer: Coventry

Located 20 miles east-south-east of Birmingham and 95 miles northwest of London, Coventry is as far in any direction as it is possible to get from the sea in the British Isles. With a population of 330,000 in 2013, Coventry was England's 10th-largest city, although it is often overlooked because of the close proximity to Britain's 'second city'.
5. Which Pacific Ocean country has a bird of paradise depicted on its national flag?

Answer: Papua New Guinea

Adopted in 1971, the flag of Papua New Guinea was designed by the 15-year old schoolgirl winner of a competition. Divided diagonally into red and black triangles, the upper-right (red) half of the flag contains the yellow silhouette of a raggiana bird of paradise. Known to the locals as a 'kumul', this species is also sometimes called a 'cenderawasih'. "The Kumuls" is also the nickname of Papua New Guinea's national rugby union team. Other countries with a bird on their national flag include Uganda, Ecuador, Dominica, Mexico, Montenegro and Kiribati, although none are as prominent as that of Papua New Guinea.
6. Which national capital is the world's largest city that is located below sea level?

Answer: Baku, Azerbaijan

Located on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula, which juts into the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan's capital, Baku, is 92 feet below sea level. It is not only the world's largest city that stands below sea level, but it is also the world's lowest-lying national capital.
7. Which Caribbean capital was originally named "Town of Saint Michael"?

Answer: Bridgetown, Barbados

Originally named the "Town of Saint Michael" when the settlement was established in 1628, the capital and the largest city in Barbados, Bridgetown, now occupies most of the "Parish of Saint Michael". Located on Carlisle Bay on the southwestern coast of the island, Bridgetown is home to around 110,000, which is roughly 40% of the entire population of the country.
8. The upliftingly-titled 'Ja, vi elsker dette landet' ('Yes, we love this country') is the national anthem of which European nation?

Answer: Norway

The lyrics were written sometime between 1859 and 1863 by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson with the melody added by his cousin Rikard Nordraak during the winter of 1863-1864. It was first publicly performed during the celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the Norwegian constitution on 17 May 1864.

After being used alongside "Sønner av Norge" ('Sons of Norway') since the 1860s, it was adopted as the 'de facto' national anthem in the early part of the 20th Century. Today it is often known simply by the title "Song for Norway".
9. Which former French colony in Africa, which is slightly smaller than the U.S. state of West Virginia, has a short Atlantic coastline and land borders with Ghana, Benin and Burkina Faso?

Answer: Togo

Tiny by African standards, Togo would fit more than 40 times into the continent's largest country, Algeria. It is still, though, more than five times the size of mainland Africa's smallest country, The Gambia. The capital, Lomé, is located in the extreme south of the country, on the Atlantic coast, as is home to just over 10% of the country's 7 million population.

The rest of the population is widely disbursed - the county's second-largest city, Sokodé, is home to only 115,000.
10. What is the basic official unit of currency in Iran?

Answer: The Rial

Although many Iranis still express prices in 'tomans', the rial has been the official unit of currency since the late 18th Century. In reality, there are approximately ten rials to one 'toman'. Devalued in 2013, in 2014 it was deemed the "world's least valued currency unit" of those 180 currencies recognized by the United Nations -- the exchange rate in late 2014 was $1 to 26,800 rial.
