Although Baylor is an expensive private university, Waco is one of the nation's poorest cities.
2. In what year was Baylor established?

Answer: 1845

Baylor was the first university established in Texas. Baylor annually celebrates Founder's Day on February 1 every year for the Founding Day of 1845 (in Independence, TX). The year 1845 is on the Baylor Seal (and other Baylor items and apparrell), so it is the year that people at Baylor associate with the foundation of Baylor.
3. What is Baylor's motto?

Answer: Pro Ecclesia Pro Texana

For Church, for Texas. "Veritas" is Harvard's motto, and "Ad astra per aspera" is NASA's motto.
4. What is Baylor's religious affiliation?

Answer: Baptist

Even though Baylor is largely Baptist, there is a significant amount of the student body who declare different Christian denominations and those who declare other religions or none at all. However, chapel is held twice a week in Waco Hall and must be attended by every student for two semesters.

Answer: Bears

Baylor currently has live bears who reside in a Class C Zoo habitat on campus. They often take walks on campus with the Baylor Chamber of Commerce and can do the "Sic 'Em Bears!" hand sign that students do at athletic games.

In the Burleson Quadrangle in the middle of campus, there sit two large bells which were from the original campus in Independence. The university struggled financially especially in the years after the Civil War, and in 1886 the trustees voted to relocate the men's campus to Waco and merge it with Waco University, keeping the name Baylor University.

Until 2012, when Texas Christian University joined, Baylor was the only private university in the Big 12.

Answer: Grass and dandelions

In 1897, while on a train to Bryan, TX, a member of the student committee looked out the window at wild dandelions and remarked that the vivid yellow flowers and green grass made a "lovely combination." Other committee members agreed, and when they returned to Waco, the colors "green and gold" were recommended and readily adopted by the student body.

The story with President Jackson is an actual event in Baylor's history, although the fact that the sword is gold is merely a coincidence.
9. What is the English translation for the Baylor holiday, "Diadeloso"?

Answer: Day of the Bear

Every year during the spring semester, Baylor celebrates an all-university carnival day to celebrate Baylor's heritage, school spirit, and culture. Diadeloso is celebrated by students, faculty, and staff where there are activities, food, concerts, and games all day long. (While other universities are in class!)
10. Who are the Immortal Ten?

Answer: Ten basketball players who died on their way to play Texas A&M

On the rainy morning of January 22, 1927 in Round Rock, shortly before noon on that day, a speeding train smashed into a bus filled with Baylor basketball athletes and supporters. The accident left ten dead and numerous others injured. To remember those who lost their lives, the names of the "Immortal Ten" are called out every year during Homecoming Week.
