Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which transmission has a high and low range as well as a splitter button? You can split both high and low range gears.

Answer: 18 Speed

It is very similar to the 13 speed transmission but with the 13 speed you can't split the low range gears.
2. Which truck is made by Paccar?

Answer: Kenworth

In 2004 the two popular Class 8 trucks that Paccar manufactured were the Kenworth and the Peterbilt.
3. A quiz on trucking wouldn't be complete without a question about the 2004 hours of service regulations. These still confuse most drivers. Under the new American hours of service introduced in 2004, a driver must take a 10 hour break after driving for 10 hours.

Answer: False

Under the new 2004 H.O.S. (Hours of Service)regulations a driver may only drive 11 hours and then he must take a 10 hour uninterrupted break. He may then drive another 11 hours. Interesting note is that the driver may drive 11 hours and then go to On Duty Not Driving for as long as he wishes without being in violation. He must still take a 10 hour break prior to driving again though.
4. Who once was the Midnight Cowboy, and in 2001 became known as the XM Satellite Cowboy?

Answer: Bill Mack

Bill has been closely associated with truckers and millions of other listeners via his radio programs out of the Fort Worth-Dallas Metroplex since 1969, broadcasting during the wee hours of the morning and keeping the world company with his music and chit-chat that has allowed him to be featured in more publications and to win more awards than any other country music DJ.. in the world.

His biggest moment in music came in 1997 when his song, "BLUE", made LeAnn Rimes a star and he won a Grammy when it was voted "The Country Song Of The Year", the highest honor that can be bestowed on a songwriter.
5. Just as automobiles, heavy duty trucks also have different models. The 379 is a model of what popular Class 8 truck?

Answer: Peterbilt

The 379 Peterbilt is a very popular model of truck for owner operators because it features a classic look with the long nose.
6. What is a "draggin wagon"?

Answer: A tow truck

Truckers use some very strange terminology. I'm sure if you were to listen to a CB Radio for a few minutes you would be scratching your head wondering what is being said.
7. You have a Class 8 tandem tractor and tandem 48' trailer. You have 11,800 lbs on the steers, 33,900 lbs on the drives, and 34,000 lbs on the tandems. Are you legal to run with it?

Answer: Yes

In most cases you are allowed 12,000 on the steering tires, 34,000 on the drive axles and 34,000 on the trailer tandems.
8. Who is the truckers' "travel agent"?

Answer: Dispatcher

The "travel agent" can be the truck driver's best friend or worst enemy. The dispatcher arranges for loads, assigns the loads to the drivers and ensures that all schedules are met. He is the driver's primary contact with the office. In some companies the dispatcher is called the fleet manager.
9. A driver says that he has a DT60 engine. Which company originally designed and manufactured the DT60?

Answer: Detroit Diesel

The DT60 became the most popular engine in heavy duty trucks in the 1990s. This was due to its reliability and fuel economy.
10. A salt shaker is a special trailer designed for hauling salt?

Answer: False

A salt shaker is a snow plow. Truckers call the snow plow a salt shaker because of it's ability to spread salt on the highways during icy conditions on the highway.
