Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'If a person doesn't have the capacity that we all want that person to have, I suspect hope is in the far distant future, if at all.' (May 22, 2001). Which of the following parts of this statement is problematic?

Answer: 'the far distant future'

The use of both 'far' and 'distant' is redundant.
2. "For every fatal shooting, there were roughly three non-fatal shootings. And, folks, this is unacceptable in America. It's just unacceptable. And we're going to do something about it." (May 14, 2001). Why is this sometimes said to be a Bushism?

Answer: He appears to be implying that we should increase the number of fatalities by shootings

It seems a perfectly sensible comment to me, but some people just go out of their way to look for "Bushisms", don't they?
3. 'It is clear our nation is reliant upon big foreign oil. More and more of our imports come from overseas.' (Sep. 25, 2000). What is wrong with this statement?

Answer: Nothing at all

Some people have tried to argue that "imports" must come from "overseas". But in the case of the United States, this is clearly nonsense. The US has for many years had strong economic relations with both Mexico and Canada, with trade with those countries accounting for almost a third of US imports at the turn of the century. And even Americans, whose grasp of world geography can be a bit shaky, will admit that neither of these countries can be regarded as "overseas".
4. 'A tax cut is really one of the anecdotes to coming out of an economic illness.' (Sept. 18, 2000). What word would make more sense than 'anecdotes'?

Answer: antidotes

5. 'This is what I'm good at. I like meeting people, my fellow citizens, I like interfacing with them.' (Sept. 8, 2000). This doesn't sound quite right. What word did Bush probably mean to use when he said 'interfacing'?

Answer: interacting

To be fair, it could be arguable that the word "interfacing" is acceptable in this context, although it is perhaps a bit of a "business-speak" cliche. But let's face it, Weisberg isn't interested in being fair.
6. 'Well, I think if you say you're going to do something and don't do it, that's trustworthiness.' (Aug. 30, 2000). Which part of this statement is problematic?

Answer: 'that's trustworthiness'

Actually, it would be the opposite of trustworthiness.
7. Which of the following is NOT a problem with this statement? 'I have a different vision of leadership. A leadership is someone who brings people together.' (Aug. 18, 2000).

Answer: The word 'vision' was misused.

8. 'I want you to know that farmers are not going to be secondary thoughts to a Bush administration. They will be in the forethought of our thinking.' (Aug. 10, 2000). Which of the words from this quote is probably being misused?

Answer: 'forethought'

I think what he meant to say was 'foreground' or 'forefront'.
9. Which of the following is NOT a problem with this statement? 'The fact that he relies on facts - says things that are not factual - are going to undermine his campaign.' (March 4, 2000).

Answer: He should have said 'running' instead of 'campaign'.

10. 'I don't have to accept their tenants. I was trying to convince those college students to accept my tenants. And I reject any labeling me because I happened to go to the university.' (Feb. 23, 2000). What did Bush mean to say when he said 'tenants'?

Answer: tenets
