Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these idioms refers to older women who are nosy and officious?

Answer: San gu liu po

'San gu liu po' literally translates as 'three aunties, and six great aunts'...can you understand how this could translate into something referring to gossip? 'Yi mao bu ba' refers to a very cheap person, unwilling to give up a single cent (or hair, in the literal case). 'San ren cheng hu' literally means 'three people change into a tiger', and figuratively means 'when you hear a rumor enough times, it becomes the truth'. 'Miao shou ren xin' translates as 'incredible hands, good heart'...and refers to a good doctor! These are all 'chengyu' or idioms, and there are thousands of these in the Chinese language!
2. Which of these words is not pronounced 'shu' (first tone) in Chinese?

Answer: door

Door is pronounced 'men' (second tone), while 'a book' (first tone), 'to lose' (first tone) and 'to transport' (1st tone) can all be pronounced 'shu'.
3. Which of these English words is not pronounced 'zhong' (first tone) in Chinese?

Answer: to cut

'To cut' is pronounced 'jian' (third tone) , while 'clock' (first tone), 'the middle' (first tone), and 'the end' (first tone) are all pronounced 'zhong'.
4. If you call a woman 'congming' in Mandarin Chinese, what do you think of her?

Answer: She is smart

A person who is 'congming' is most certainly intelligent. Of course, we have no idea if this person is beautiful, ugly or boring...that is something that we'll just have to find out!
5. What is the term for a person who drives a taxi cab?

Answer: Siji

A 'siji' refers to a driver in general, of a bus, limousine, taxi and several other modes of transport. In Taiwan, a taxi cab driver is also called a 'yunzhang', which means 'master of transport'.
6. Which of these would not be a term for a government dignitary?

Answer: Nuli

While 'Zongtong' refers to a president, 'Zhuxi' a premier and 'Shizhang' a mayor...'Nuli' refers to a slave. I certainly have never met a government official who lived the life of a slave...
7. There is no single character in Chinese that refers to the number '1 million'. However, there is a character for '100 million'...how do you pronounce it?

Answer: Yi

'Bai' = 100, 'Qian' = 1,000, 'Wan' = 10,000 and 'Yi' = 100,000,000. In order to say '1 million' you must combine the characters for 100 and 10,000 thusly 'Yi bai wan' (the 'Yi' in that case means 'one'). Confused? Just try changing a few million yuan!
8. 'Fojiao' refers to Buddhism, 'Jidujiao' to Christianity and 'Daojiao' to Taoism...but to what does 'Huijiao' refer?

Answer: Islam

The 'Hui' are the Muslims of China, and can most commonly be found in Xinjiang Autonomous Region in the far west and in the city of Xi'an.
9. True or false: The word typhoon comes from the Chinese langauge.

Answer: True

This is true! In Chinese, it would be pronounced 'Taifeng'...nearly the same as in English. The term means 'great wind'...and let me tell you, the winds in a typhoon are great!
10. If you are staring at a 'diannao'...what do you have before you?

Answer: A computer

You are currently staring at a 'diannao' which means 'computer' in Mandarin! I hope that you have enjoyed this quiz and learned a thing or two. Xie xie, zaijian!
