Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In most South American homes a "presepio" will be displayed during the Christmas season. What specifically does the "presepio" represent?

Answer: The birth of the Christ child

The presepio is a nativity scene or a crèche. It usually includes figurines of Joseph, Mary, baby Jesus, the shepherds, and the wise men arranged in a replica of the stable. Nativity scenes are used throughout the world during the Christmas season.
2. South American Christmas celebrations can include all of these except which one?

Answer: Masked balls

These celebrations are often followed by a family dinner after which they will attend a midnight mass service.
3. Brazilian children put out what items hoping Papa Noel will fill them with presents?

Answer: Shoes

Even though it is very hot in Brazil at this time of the year, Papa Noel wears the typical red suit and boots and has a beard.
4. Argentineans have Christmas dinner on which of these dates?

Answer: December 24

Argentineans believe the Christ child was born on December 24. Their celebrations include attending church, being with family, and eating a meal built around pork, turkey and traditional dishes.
5. In Peru, the children receive gifts on both Christmas and January 6th which is known as the "Feast of ___" what?

Answer: The Three Kings

The Festival of the Three Kings, or "Fiesta de Reyes", comes from a legend about Francisco Pizarro. It is believed that he was the first to give the name "Ciudad de los Reyes" (City of the Kings) to the city of Lima because he found the location for his new capital on the same date as the Epiphany.
6. In Chile, Santa is called "Viejo Pascuero", or "Old Man Christmas". How does he manage to get into houses to deliver presents?

Answer: Through a window

Because of Chile's warm climate, chimneys are usually smaller, so it is believed Old Man Christmas comes through a window. He does resemble the typical Santa and has reindeer.
7. In Mexico, Christmas celebrations begin on December 16 which is the First Day of Posadas. "Posada" refers to what element of the Christmas story?

Answer: Journey of the Holy Family

In this celebration participants take on the parts of Mary and Joseph - the travellers. Others play innkeepers. The travellers go from house to house seeking shelter for the night, but find none until arriving at the house where the Nativity has been placed. A prayer is said, and a party follows. The tradition begins on December 16th because it took Mary and Joseph nine days to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem.
8. Before going to bed on January 5th, Venezuelan children leave out straw and water for whom?

Answer: The magi and their camels

The straw and water are later replaced with gifts. Children are happy to find a black smudge on their cheek when they awaken. It means they've been kissed by Balthazar, the King of Ethiopia, which is a sign of good luck.
9. On Christmas Eve in Bolivia, the ringing of church bells summons families to a midnight mass known as "La Misa Del Gallo" or Mass of the _______?

Answer: Rooster

Misa Del Gallo is Portuguese for "rooster's mass". In Spanish it is called "Misa de los Pastores" which translates to "shepherd's mass". After attending mass, Bolivians will have a dinner which includes a stew called "picana del pollo" which contains chicken and a variety of vegetables.
10. In Brazil, a favorite tradition includes the folk play "Los Pastores", meaning which of the following?

Answer: The Shepherds

Friends and family members may participate in the play. In the Brazilian version, there are shepherdesses rather than the usual shepherds, and a gypsy tries to kidnap baby Jesus.
