Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many senators are in the United States Congress?

Answer: 100

There are one hundred senators in Congress because two are chosen from each of the 50 states. To be chosen as a senator a person must be at least thirty years old, have been a citizen of the United States for at least nine years, and be a resident of the state they are representing.

In 1788, Pennsylvania became the first state to elect two senators to Congress. A senator is elected for a six year term, but there is no limit on how many terms can be served.
2. Against which of these countries did the United States fight in the Revolutionary War?

Answer: Great Britain

The first physical casualty of the American Revolution was the slave Crispus Attucks, during the so-called "Boston Massacre". The American Revolution ended with the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown on October 19, 1781, (although British troops didn't officially leave New York city for two more years).
3. What document begins with the phrase "When in the course of human events..."?

Answer: The Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson and signed on July 4, 1776. There were fifty-six signatories of the Declaration of Independence.
4. During which month does the election for the President of the United States take place?

Answer: November

The first Election Day was named by Congress in 1845 as the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. November was chosen because harvest time was over for men and they could travel to the polling place. Tuesday was chosen so that men could travel all day on Monday since Sunday was a church day and considered a day of rest.
5. What was the name of the ship that brought the first pilgrims to the New World?

Answer: Mayflower

Before the Mayflower transported the pilgrims to the New World, it was a merchant ship that made trips to ports in France and Spain. The Mayflower tried to make two trans-Atlantic trips with the Speedwell as its companion, but the Speedwell had problems with leakage both times and both ships had to return to port. On September 6, 1620, the Mayflower took off by itself with one hundred and two passengers and thirty crew.
6. Which US president had a presidential order written that freed the slaves?

Answer: Abraham Lincoln

After the battle of Antietam, President Lincoln declared that in January of 1863 he would have all the slaves freed in rebellion states. The final draft of the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Lincoln on January 1, 1863. The bill stated that slaves would be freed only in states that had seceded from the government.
7. How many stars are on the flag of the United States?

Answer: 50

The fifty stars on the flag of the United States stand for the fifty states in the Union. The colors of the flag are red, white, and blue. The thirteen stripes on the flag stand for the thirteen original colonies. The Flag Act of April 1818 stated that a star was to be added to the flag each time a state was admitted to the Union.

The last star was added to the flag in 1959 by an executive order from President Eisenhower when Hawaii was admitted as a state.
8. Which US president proclaimed November 26 as "Thanksgiving Day" in the United States?

Answer: Washington

President George Washington proclaimed in 1789 that November 26 would be the national day of Thanksgiving. Until 1939, Thanksgiving was celebrated on that day, until President Franklin Roosevelt moved it to a week earlier to accommodate the retailers who wanted a longer shopping period for customers.

In 1941, Congress finally settled the date for Thanksgiving by making it the fourth Thursday in November to begin being celebrated in 1942. In 1947, President Truman began the tradition of pardoning a turkey the day before Thanksgiving.
9. In the Bill of Rights, how is the freedom of speech known?

Answer: First amendment

Amendment I of the Bill of Rights states, "Congress shall make no law respecting and establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or of the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."
10. What is NOT one of the three branches of the United States government?

Answer: Profitable

The three branches of the United States government are legislative, executive, and judicial. Congress is the legislative branch of our government and they make the laws. The only laws they cannot make have to do with anything concerning collecting revenue. The House of Representatives deals with laws concerning collecting revenue.
