Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Der Museum war an Feiertagen geschlossen. (The museum was closed on public holidays.) Is 'der Museum' correct?

Answer: No

das Museum (the museum, pl.: die Museen)
Most nouns ending in -um will be neuter, and therefore have the article 'das'. Other examples are: 'das Datum' (the date, pl.: die Daten) or 'das Zentrum' (the centre, pl.: die Zentren).
In German every noun has to be capitalized.
2. Der Sportler wurde von seinen Fans bejubelt. (The athlete was cheered by his supporters.) Is it really 'der Sportler'?

Answer: Yes

der Sportler (the male athlete, pl.: die Sportler)
If the noun is a male person, the ending will often be -er, as in 'der Lehrer' (the male teacher), 'der Sänger' (the male singer), etc. Those words do not change in the plural, only the article will change from 'der' to 'die'.
However, if the noun is a female person, the ending -in will be added to the male word and the article changes to 'die': 'die Sportlerin' (the female athlete), 'die Lehrerin' (the female teacher), 'die Sängerin' (the female singer). To form the plural, these nouns get the ending -nen: e.g. 'die Sportlerinnen'.
3. Das Sommer kommt dieses Jahr sehr früh. (Summer is very early this year.) Is it 'das Sommer'?

Answer: No

der Sommer (the summer, pl.: die Sommer)
All the seasons of the year, days of the week and months are masculine and therefore have the article 'der'. When the seasons are put into the plural, only the article changes from 'der' to 'die', but the word itself stays the same. When the subject is in the plural, the article will always be 'die'.
4. Der Universität ist bekannt für seine juristische Fakultät. (The University is famous for its Law faculty.) Is 'der Universität' okay?

Answer: No

die Universität (the university, pl.: die Universitäten)
Of course, because we have a feminine, the word 'seine' in the question should be 'ihre' instead. The possessive pronoun always has to have the same gender as the noun.
Most nouns ending in -tät will be feminine and have the article 'die'. Another example is 'die Nationalität' (the nationality, pl.: die Nationalitäten)
5. Das Rose riecht sehr gut. (The rose smells very nice.) Is 'das Rose' correct?

Answer: No

die Rose (the rose, pl.: die Rosen)
Very often flowers and trees are female words and go with the article 'die'. Other examples are 'die Orchidee' (the orchid, pl.: die Orchideen), 'die Eiche' (the oak tree, pl.: die Eichen).
An exception to this rule is 'der Ahorn' (the maple tree, pl.: die Ahorne).
6. Das Haustür ist abgeschlossen. (The front door is locked.) Is 'Haustür' a neuter word?

Answer: No

die Haustür (the front door, pl.: die Haustüren)
This word actually consists of two nouns: 'das Haus' (the house) and 'die Tür' (the door). The last noun of such a compound word is always the one that determines the gender. In this case, since 'Tür' is feminine, the whole word is feminine as well.
7. Die Gerechtigkeit siegt wieder einmal. (Justice wins once again.) Is it 'die Gerechtigkeit'?

Answer: Yes

Usually words ending in -keit or -heit are female and have the article 'die'. Other examples are: 'die Freiheit' (the freedom, pl.: die Freiheiten), 'die Schönheit' (the beauty, pl.: die Schönheiten), 'die Höflichkeit' (the politeness, pl.: die Höflichkeiten).
8. Die Mädchen spielt im Garten. (The girl is playing in the garden.) Is 'Mädchen' a feminine word?

Answer: No

das Mädchen (the girl, pl.: die Mädchen)
Although it may seem very rude, in German 'girl' is a neuter word. This has grammatical reasons: the endings -chen and -lein show that the noun is a small version of something, for example 'der Hund' (the dog) - 'das Hündchen' (the little dog), 'der Vogel' (the bird) - 'das Vöglein' (the little bird). All words ending in -chen or -lein have the article 'das'.
The Old German word 'die Maid' (the young woman) is not used today anymore but it is easy to see that the word 'das Mädchen' (the little young woman = the girl) originated from 'die Maid'.
9. Der Kino war zur Premiere ausverkauft. (The cinema was sold out for the premiere.) Is 'der Kino' correct?

Answer: No

das Kino (the cinema, pl.: die Kinos)
Most nouns ending in -o are neuter and go with the article 'das'. Other examples are: 'das Motto' (the theme, pl.: die Mottos), 'das Radio' (the radio, pl.: die Radios).
10. Die Freundschaft der Kinder hielt ihr ganzes Leben lang. (The children's friendship lasted their whole lives.) Is 'Freundschaft' a feminine noun?

Answer: Yes

die Freundschaft (the friendship, pl.: die Freundschaften)
Most words with the ending -schaft are feminine and have the article 'die', such as 'die Gesellschaft' (the society, pl.: die Gesellschaften) or 'die Wissenschaft' (the science, pl.: die Wissenschaften).
