Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The candidate who receives the popular vote is then elected president.

Answer: False

False. This is where the electoral college comes in to play. Each State is allocated a number of electors equal to the number of its U.S. Senators (always 2) plus the number of its U.S. Representatives (which may change each decade according to the size of each State's population as determined in the Census). The electors are the ones who actually vote for the president, not the people.
2. How many electoral votes must a candidate get in order to be elected?

Answer: 270

There are 538 total electoral votes and the winner must receive 270 which is just over 50% of the total.
3. Which U.S. state was the first one to have exceeded a total of fifty electoral votes for any given presidential election?

Answer: California

California has the most electoral votes, with 55 as of 2004. Following California is Texas with 34 and New York with 31.
4. Wyoming is the only state that has ever had the minimum of three electoral votes.

15. In 1976, Texas voted for Democratic candidate Jimmy Carter.

Answer: True

In 1976 Texas elected President James Earl Carter. Prior to the 2004 Election, this was the last election in which Texas elected a Democratic presidential candidate.
